This information has been published to assist you with your planning – especially in light of major changes due to COVID-19. It is imperative that we take safety and health precautions very seriously. Please do your part to adhere to all local and state health mandates. It is our great hope that we can complete a modified season and have a state championship! Some major changes will occur this season including: Modified length of season, altered state championship qualification process, and a modified state championships with Nordic races happening on different dates, and possibly different locations, than Alpine. If questions arise throughout this season, please connect with your Athletic Director, and reach out to me as needed. It will take a TEAM and COLLABORATIVE effort to get through this season, and as we navigate unprecedented times, let’s keep the focus on our student-athletes, and help them ensure they have a memorable season. Brookens Assistant Commissioner BB/sw 3 Please CLICK HERE for the current COVID-19 Requirements & Mandates Colorado High School Activities Association 4 CDPHE Variance Requirements: Skiing (Alpine & Nordic) (updated Dec 2020) **Participation is a privilege, not a right, and we need to protect the opportunities for all students/teams/schools. A failure to uphold all the safety requirements listed below may result in the removal of an individual or team from participating this season. SPECIFIC VARIANCE GRANTED Nordic: Allow for up to 25 skiers per wave, with individual starts strongly encouraged. In individual start races, skiers will be separated by 15 second intervals. In wave starts of 2 skiers per wave, waves will be separated by 30 second intervals. In wave starts of larger than 2 skiers, waves will be separated by 1-minute intervals. Nordic & Alpine: For ALL regular season races and ski competitions, events will be limited to 75 skiers per gender for a total event size of less than 200 when volunteers and coaches are included (unless the venue allows for more). STUDENTS/COACHES/MANAGERS SHOULD NOT GO TO PRACTICE/RACE IF Any are exhibiting any symptoms of the coronavirus. Have been in contact with someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days. CHSAA SPORTS MEDICINE COVID-19 REQUIREMENTS PREPARING TO PRACTICE/RACE Protect against infection by: ● Wash your hands with soap and water (for 20 seconds or longer), or use a hand sanitizer if soap and water are not readily available, before going to ski. ● Students should bring clean water bottles. ● When not actively playing, please adhere to all proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and facemask protocols. ● Arrive as close as possible to when you need to be practice/play and maintain social distancing in groups. ● *Daily screenings must happen before anyone can join the race area/practice area (CHSAA Sign-in Sheet Symptom Tracker) WHEN PRACTICING/RACING 1. Stay at least six feet apart from other players when not involved in a physical activity. 2. Modify activities to limit/reduce potential violations of social distancing requirements. Work within pods or small groups to limit the contact between skiers. 3. Only cohorts (teammates) should ride the chairlift together. 4. Eliminate high fives, huddles, and reduce intimate team meetings. Coaches should avoid a pre/post practice organizational (all levels) meetings. Coaches may meet briefly with their specific team, but as much logistical communication/information that can be shared via email or website is ideal. 5. Masks or face coverings for athletes are required at all times except when physically racing. 6. Non-athletes (coaches, officials, spectators, volunteers, etc.) must wear face coverings at all times. 7. Teams/cohorts should plan to provide their own shelter, as it is likely that teams will not be allowed in buildings. 5 8. Only groups of 10 Alpine skiers at one time at the start. 9. Eliminate congregating/congestion at the start lines, and widen finish areas to allow athletes to adequately space themselves when crossing the finish line. 10. Limit travel and avoid overnight stays. Regional races are strongly encouraged. 11. Work with host areas and local public health departments to obey their health and safety regulations and to determine appropriate race sizes. 12. As in all CHSAA athletics, spectators must follow the Indoor/Outdoor Guidance for the dial-level of the county. CHSAA STATE SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS 1. Limit to 75 skiers per gender per race 2. Nordic races (2) will take place on 1 day to limit or eliminate overnight stays 3. Alpine races will take place over 2 days 4. There will NOT be an awards ceremony or banquet. Trophies and awards would be mailed to the schools and individuals. 5. State Championships TBD at TBD COVID-19 Pandemic Media Note: Schools and/or school districts will have the final word on how media may or may not access contests during this unprecedented time. CHSAA recommends no practice access be granted to maintain health and safety of all concerned. The decisions will be the sole determination of the school/school districts based on recommendations from local, county, state and federal health guidelines.
