ISSN 2373–874X (online) 017-01/2016EN Baseball: a U.S. Sport with a Spanish- American Stamp Orlando Alba 1 Topic: Spanish language and participation of Spanish-American players in Major League Baseball. Summary: The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of the Spanish language and the remarkable contribution to Major League Baseball by Spanish- American players. Keywords: baseball, sports, Major League Baseball, Spanish, Latinos Introduction The purpose of this paper is to highlight the remarkable contribution made to Major League Baseball (MLB) by players from Spanish America both in terms of © Clara González Tosat Hispanic Digital Newspapers in the United States Informes del Observatorio / Observatorio Reports. 016-12/2015EN ISSN: 2373-874X (online) doi: 10.15427/OR016-12/2015EN Instituto Cervantes at FAS - Harvard University © Instituto Cervantes at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Harvard University quantity and quality.1 The central idea is that the significant and valuable Spanish-American presence in the sports arena has a very positive impact on the collective psyche of the immigrant community to which these athletes belong. Moreover, this impact extends beyond the limited context of sport since, in addition to the obvious economic benefits for many families, it enhances the image of the Spanish-speaking community in the United States. At the level of language, contact allows English to influence Spanish, especially in the area of vocabulary, which Spanish assimilates and adapts according to its own peculiar structures. Baseball, which was invented in the United States during the first half of the nineteenth century, was introduced into Spanish America about thirty or forty years later.

Our Beautiful American (Latin) Pastime Henry Weinberg He hustled to the airplane bathroom to eat passport pages, piece by piece, forever destroying the evidence of his fake identity. Knocks began to rap on the door sending him into a scramble. He ripped out the pages with pictures and returned to his seat. He continued, piece by piece, ordering a Guinness to wash it down, then sat anxiously for the duration of the flight. Days later he signed with the Chicago White Sox for $68 million. Jose Abreu’s story is movie material, but it is not uncommon. Aspiring baseball players in Latin America go through unprecedented measures to play in America. Players like Abreu devote their teenage years to baseball because it’s an escape from their often poverty-stricken or violence-ridden lives. Major League Baseball has provided countless happy endings for Hispanic players, however, the means to reach ‘the show’ expose a tricky situation that possesses social and cultural significance. With paths to the MLB marred by unethical developmental practices, shrouded in mystery, and inherently illegal, baseball’s dark side is fully underway and under the radar.

FALL OF THE ROCKET: STEROIDS IN BASEBALL AND THE CASE AGAINST ROGER CLEMENS DANIEL HEALEY* INTRODUCTION - THE ROCKET ON THE HILL Athletes who are chemically propelled to victory do not merely overvalue winning, they misunderstand why winning is properly valued .... Drugs that make sport exotic, by radical intrusions into the body, drain sport of its exemplary power by making it a display of chemistry rather than character. In fact, it becomes a display of some chemists' virtuosity and some athletes' bad character. - George F. Will1 On February 13, 2008, Roger Clemens (Clemens) traveled to Capitol Hill to clear his name. A seven-time Cy Young Award-winning pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Houston Astros, "the Rocket" had come to the end of his career, but only the beginning of his legal and media troubles. In December 2007, Clemens's trainer, Brian McNamee (McNamee), had implicated his former employer as a steroids user in the "Mitchell Report," the definitive account of the proliferation of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) in Major League Baseball (MLB).2 After facing two months of intense media scrutiny, Clemens traveled to the Hill to testify before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform (the "Committee") that he had never used PEDs.
