Manu, Manu road, Abra Malaga, Machu Picchu Also including Pelagic, Lomas de Lachay, Santa Eulalia Valley and Marcopomacochas

www.kolibriexpeditions.com – [email protected] General

This trip was organized by Kolibri Expeditions. It turned out to be a very good trip almost without any hazzles and with a lot of seen. No less than 754 species were recorded during the trip!

All of the participants were first-timers in South America and for most of them, this was probably a once-in-a- lifetime trip to the continent. We designed the trip to see as many different families and habitats as well as spe- cies, as possible. Add to this the ruins at Machu Picchu. It was also a request for short travelling distances. Time spent in vehicles and boats are, however, pretty inevitable in Peru.

At the high altitude sites, Abra Malaga and Ticlio, some in the group suffered from altitude sickness and were given oxygen.

The wheather was generally good with some rain the first days.

16 oct - Early start for the pelagic off Lima. The sea was unusually rough today and some got seasick. Those that kept their eyes open were rewarded with Waved albatrosses, stormpetrels and all three smaller skuas etc.

17 oct - Departure at 3.30 am from hostal Las Artes to the airport and the 5.40 flight to Cusco. A bus was waiting for us and we sat of to lake Huacarpay. One of the first birds seen was the endemic Bearded mountianeer and we also heard Rusty-fronted canastero. Wetland birds and others were all new to the group. We walked up a little side valley and got brief views of Streak-fronted thornbird and good views of Plumbeous rails. We had to leave rather early for Ollantaytambo with a lunch break in Urubamba. Our train to Aguas Clientes left at 15.00 and we checked in at our hotel Imasuma. It was still light so we walked up to the hot springs and had good views of Gould´s inca while we waited for dusk. At 18.10 a male Lyre-tailed nightjar came flying over our heads to the delight of every- one. We ended the day with Lomo saltado, a typical Peruvian dish.

18 oct - At dawn we walked down to the busses that took us up to the ruins of Machu Picchu. Unfortunately it was a dense fog today and we didn´t get the classic view of the ruins. It cleared up a bit as we walked around the ruins before it started to rain. By 9 am the rain eased and we took a bus down the road and started birding as the wheather improved. A pair of Condors put in a nice show and the mood was high. During the walk back to Aguas Calientes we also picked up Masked fruiteater, Sclater´s tyrannulet, Pale-legged warbler and Highland mot- mot among others. In the afternoon we boarded the train back to Ollantaytambo and had an early evening.

19 oct - 4 am departure for the wet side of Abra Malaga. We White-tufted Grebe had the misfortune to understand why it is called the wet side. A light drizzle throughout day made birding uncomfortable but we picked up goodies like Cusco brush-finch, Scaled metaltail, Sword-billed hummingbird, Pale-footed swallow and Plushcap. We decided not to try for the bigger polylepis today but instead tried a smaller patch closer to the road. This paid off with Ash-breasted tit-tyrant and Tawny tit-spinetail while two in the group had brief views of a possible Royal cinclodes. A stop on the way back on the dry side (which wasn´t dry today) gave us Chestnut- breasted mountain-finch and White-tufted sunbeam, two Peruvian endemics.

20 oct - Another try for the wet side started with an absent bus driver! After scouting around at the plaza we found an available driver with a minibus and we could be off only 45 minutes late. A landslide blocked the road on the wet side and we had little options but birding there, which paid off with a good flock containing Marcapata spinetail, Unstreaked tit-tyrant and Puna thistletail. The landslide was soon cleared and we could continue. Much the same birds as yesterday but better views of the Sword-billed hummer. By midday we went up to higher grounds and walked the bigger polylepis. We found several of the good birds like White-browed tit-spinetail, Ash-breasted tit-tyrant, Line-fronted canastero, Puna tapaculo, Thick-billed siskin and Tit-like dacnis. Some saw Streak-headed antpitta. In the afternoon we went to Cusco where Walter Mancilla was waiting for us at the Bu Hostal.

21 oct - We started early for the long drive to the start of the famous Manu road. Short after Paucartambo we made a breakfast stop and did some birding seeing Creamy-crested spinetail and some hummingbirds. During the afternoon we birded the upper temperate part of the road and taped in a Rufous antpitta that everyone got to see well to my surprise. We had a late lunch and checked in at ACCA biological station at about 3000m. The wheather improved and we birded around the station. Red-and-white antpitta was surprisingly easy to see and everyone got good looks. In the late afternoon we went down the road to a stake-out for Swallow-tailed nightjar, but before we got there we spotted one from the car and went out. Three males and a female put in a spectacular show just metres from our heads.

22 oct - After breakfast we birded along the road down from the station until the cars came and took us down to the tunnels from where we walked a few kilometres. It was a bit slow but we did see a pair of Barred fruiteaters. We drove down to Pillahuata and walked a few kilometres down from there picking up some flocks and we had very good views of Golden-headed quetzals. On the way down we spotted a Black-and-chestnut eagle from the car and also a Black-streaked puffbird and some Cocks-of-the-Rock. At the Cock-of-the-Rock lodge it was busy at the feeders and the group was puzzled by all the hummingbirds and others that moved around. 23 oct - Today we walked down the road from the lodge. At the first stream we enjoyed a Sunbittern and at the second stream was a Fasciated tiger-heron. Several Crimson-bellied woodpeckers flew across the road but only some got good looks. Same with an Umbrellabird and three Military macaws. Before lunch we walked the trail below the lodge but didn´t see much but we heard Yellow-rumped antwren. In the afternoon we walked above the lodge and hit a big and lingering flock and it became messy in the heads of the participants. Good thing included Golden-eared tanager and Golden-collared honeycreeper. In the late afternoon we enjoyed a good display of the Cocks-of-the-Rock just above the lodge.

24 oct - We started with driving down to the Quita Calzones bridge at about 1000 m. No less than five Amazonian umbrellabirds were seen well from the cars. As we got out of the cars by the bridge, there were birds around and during the next half hour we saw Lanceolated monklet, Golden-bellied warbler, Yellow-breasted antwren and Cin- namon-faced tyrannulets among others. Again a brief view of Military macaw. We drove down a bit and stopped in some open habitat near Patria. A new set of birds met us and we found Gray hawk, Barred antshrike and Yellow tyrannulet. Lunch at the dock at Atalaya and we boarded the boat that took us across the Alto Madre de Dios river a we birded our way to the Amazonía lodge. We found a Great potoo on it´s daytime roost. Some in the group got good looks at a Thrush-like antpitta without playback. Band-tailed manakins and some trogons etc ended a good day.

25 oct - Today we split up the group for the first time and we obviously saw different things. Along the trails at Amazonía we found Rufous-headed woodpecker, Tiny hawk and Rufous-capped puffbird among many other birds. By lunch we went a couple of hours downstream to Pantiacolla lodge and hit the trails in the afternoon. Rather slow but White-cheeked tody-flycatcher was among the better things as was the pair of Sulphury flycatchers at the lodge clearing.

Waved Albatross breeds on the Galapagos but is the most frequently seen albatross on the pelagics off Lima

26 oct - Morning birding along the Tinamou and Capybara trails produced Koepke´s hermit, Striolated puffbird, heard Pavonine cuckoo, Slender-billed xenops, displaying Round-tailed manakins, Ash-throated gnateater and a pair of White-crested spadebills as some of the highlights. In the afternoon we went with the boat down to Boca Manu. A heavy rainshower made the trip somewhat unplesant.

27 oct - During the morning we birded around the lake not far from the village. Horned screamer, Snail kite, Wood storks and others made it a nice morning. Around lunch we went further down river, which was now called Madre de Dios, to Manu Camping lodge, owned by Walter. In the afternoon we walked to a small lake and saw Sungrebe among more common birds. Here we found some fishermen that informed us about a nest of Harpy eagle nearby. I had no choise but to go there a few days later.

28 oct - Early start for the famous clay-lick near the Blanquillo lodge for half of the group and the canopy tower by the other half. The parrots put in a good performance with about 150 Red-and-green macaws and many others. The tower produced several like Plum-throated and Spangled and a female Purple-throated. Also a good selection of tanagers in a flock. Below the tower we hit an understorey flock that had some antwrens. When the two groups merged we had White-eyed tody-tyrant. In the afternoon we went to the Cocha Blanco and waited in the shelter for the temperature to cool down a bit. Purus jacamar and a very tame Rufescent tiger-heron kept us company. We boarded the raft and were pushed slowly around the lake until we found a family party of Giant ot- ters. Just before the shelter a Razor-billed currasow was seen well by everyone and we taped out a White-throated antbird.

29 oct - Same thing as yesterday but we swopped places. Neither the tower or the clay-lick was as good as yes- terday. Part of the parrot show was spoiled by a Great black-hawk that hung around there all morning. Just the macaws dared to come down. The tower didn´t produce any flocks. In the afternoon we walked to the bamboo at the lodge and saw some birds like Flammulated bamboo-tyrant and Ruddy-tailed flycatcher.

30 oct - We started with a boatride up the river for about an hour to some houses and employed a local that took us to the ‘Harpy’ nest. Once there an eagle was in the tree but it was a Crested eagle. Not that it matter so much, both are impressive and rare. The flew off before everyone got to see it and we walked away for a while hoping that it would come back which it did after about an hour. I tried to get a different angle on the bird and was surprised to find that I was looking at an adult Ornate hawk-eagle in the same tree! That bird flew off before the others got on to it. On the way back we enjoyed good scope-views of a Great jacamar and some got to see Fiery-capped manakin. In the afternoon we birded the trails around Manu Camping lodge. For those that did the Tapir trail it was highly successful with birds like Black tinamou seen! Brazilian and White-throated tinamou heard. Purplish jacamar and Rufous-tailed xenops were others of many highlights.

Ringed Storm-petrel. The Lima pelagic is probably White-vented Storm-petrel seen in hundreds while the best place to see this species chumming 31 oct - A heavy rain during the night spoiled the mammal clay-lick for those that went there and the rain lingered into the morning. When it eased we walked the trails and found Semicollared puffbirds including a pair at a nest. Other goodies included Pavonine quetzal, Red-necked woodpecker, Chestnut-winged hookbill and foliage-gleener and a pair of Paradise jacamars. Around the lodge we also found Green-and-rufous kingfisher, nestbuilding Plain softtails and the usual White-chinned sapphires. A small hummer proved elusive but evetually gave good enough views to identify it as a female of the rare Black-bellied thorntail. Some were lucky to see a Red-billed pied-tanager in a fruiting tree behind the cabins. Those that walked to the bamboo in the afternoon had gripping views of the spectacular Long-billed woodcreeper and also a pair of Slender-billed kites. Even more luck for those who walked the Tapir trail. Some in that group saw a Harpy eagle flying by!!! Also Red-billed pied-tanagers and Long-tailed woodcreeper were seen. Unfortunately this was our last day at this great place.

1 nov - All day in the boat for the long drive, 9 hours, down the river to Labyrinto and then two more hours in the bus to Puerto Maldonado. Rather boring but it was brightened up by two Jabirus, Black- and Ornate hawk-eagle, hundreds of Sand-coloured nighthawks along the river. A Laughin falcon was seen well during the bus ride and two White-tailed kites. Night at the nice Don Carlos hotel.

2 nov - Today was pretty much a travelling day to Lima but as we had a midday flight we went out birding in the morning. First stop gave Red-breasted blackbirds and a short walk around a farm gave most surprisingly three White-throated jacamars in a tree! That brought up the jacamar list on the trip to six species! A couple of other stops gave Gray-headed kite, Rusty-margined flycatcher, another White-tailed kite and heard Russet-crowned crake before it was time to go to the airport. The plane was delayed an hour and two people were not on their list despite the tickets were confirmed. At the end everyone was on board and we landed in Lima in the afternoon and drove straight to Pantanos de Ventanilla just 20 minutes north of the airport. This nice little wetland produced the usual wetland birds and good views of them as well. Many-coloured rush-tyrant was just one of many that showed well just below the tower. We went down to the beach area and had some Peruvian thickknees and a host of Ameri- can waders testing the skills of the participants. Some of these are major rarities in Sweden and the group gained some more experience. Night at hostal las Artes in Lima and a good dinner at restaurant Nautica.

3 nov - Early morning drive up to Lomas de Lachay. Along the entrance we saw Coastal miners and Least seed- snipes. Breakfast and a walk along the trails around the visitor centre gave us good looks at Thick-billed miners, Raimondi´s yellow-finch and Mountain parakeets and many hummingbirds. We then went a bit further up north along the PanAmerican highway to the Paraiso lagoon. Not far from the highway was a Tawny-throated dotterel and down at the lagoon it was crowded with birds. Most impressive a flock of thousands of Sanderlings and a Per- egrine that ploughed through the flock. Also two Hudsonian godwits, four Peruvian terns, 351 Chilean flamingoes, Great grebes and both Oystercatchers plus hundreds of ducks, coots and moorhens etc. We then did a fruitless at- tempt to the Cactus canastero but we only heard one high up. On the way back to Lima we ran into some problems. Another group had crached with their vehicle on the central highway and was at the same hotel in Santa Eulalia as we were going to. Above my head another bigger bus had been ordered that could take both groups. We had to wait a long time for the bus in Lima before we could set off to Santa Eulalia where we arrived at 11 pm.

Red-legged Cormorant must be the most beautiful cormorant in the world!

4 nov - We drove up the central highway with a breakfast/birding stop at Rio Blanco picking up Rusty-crowned tit-spinetail and White-winged cinclodes before breakfast. Then higher up to the Ticlio bog at 4500 m. Fredrik was feeling all but good from the start and got oxygen. Only five minutes after we left the bus, Håkan collapsed and took over the oxygen. Our key bird here was the rare White-bellied cinclodes which we saw four and they were dis- playing putting in a nice show. Once down at the bus we realized that Staffan was missing and he was feeling bad at the start as well but with an upset stomach. We were all getting worried and started to search for him in vain. We went lower down to pick up the other group and found Staffan well and happy with them. Fredrik and Håkan were sent back to Santa Eulalia with a taxi while the rest of us went to Marcopomacochas. The stake-out for the sought-after Diademed sandpiper-plover worked well and it only took a few minutes before we had found three. After a pic-nic lunch some people felt a bit tired from the long trip and the high altitude but the rest walked around slowly and picked up Slender-billed miner and Puna ground-tyrant. A stop on way back gave Streak-throated cansteros and Black-breasted hillstar.

5 nov - Today we should go up the Santa Eulalia valley but we didn´t get very far before a broken bus blocked the road. We birded while they fixed the bus and half an hour later we were back on track. A stop for a stake-out for Great inca-finch worked just fine. We immidiately found two and another stop gave good views of Peruvian pygmy- owl and a brief view of Black-necked woodpecker. Then up to the stake-out for Rufous-breasted warbling-finch and late breakfast. We climbed up the scrubby slope and eventually everyone had had good views of at least three males. Some also saw Canyon canatero and Andean tinamou. A stop lower down gave just brief views of Bronze- tailed comet and that was the end of a very successful trip. List of species
