The collection consists of approximately 300 items arranged into 13 boxes. Access to this collection may be permitted for the purposes of personal and scholarly research. The Montgomery County Archives requires that the following credit line be used in all publications to identify that the image or document used is from its holdings: Courtesy of the Montgomery County Archives. Specific citation of where the image or document is located (collection, box, folder, etc.) should be made in an acknowledgements section, footnote, or bibliography. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The Frank M. Hodgson Collection contains approximately 300 items, consisting of documents related to public education and local history in Montgomery County, Tennessee. It includes nineteenth-century diaries, lists, photographs, reports, genealogical data, pamphlets, histories, and newspaper clippings. In 2004, Dr. Frank McGuire Hodgson donated this collection. Hodgson, a Clarksville native, dedicated his career to education and school administration. His research on early public schools in Montgomery County culminated in a doctoral dissertation, The Growth and Development of the Public School Movement in Montgomery County, Tennessee, 1806-1913, completed in 1984 at Vanderbilt University. Much of the collection contains materials on various school histories from the late 19th-mid-20th centuries in Montgomery County. An assortment of documents also trace the life and work of Samuel Leonard (S.L.) Smith, a renowned leader in school plant design and planning with ties to the former Southwestern Presbyterian University campus in Clarksville. Smith’s work supervising rural schools and designing community school plans with the Julius Rosenwald Fund eventually led to his appointment as the director of the Julius Rosenwald Fund Southern Office in Nashville. Various books, periodicals, and pamphlets cover historic moments in local history, including the Black Patch War and the Bicentennial Celebration. Newspaper clippings from the “Cumberland Lore” section of The Leaf Chronicle span from 1984 to 1993 and include articles on local history topics. Issues of the Tennessee Historical Quarterly, spanning from Fall 1975 to Summer 2002, were previously processed and combined into the Tennessee Historical Quarterly Collection. Due to size constraints, a copy of Webster’s Third International New Dictionary (1971) is stored separately at AR 29/1-8.5. All photographs and slides are housed in the Archives Photograph Collection. 2 Frank M. Hodgson Collection Acc. #: 2004.003 Series I: Frank M.
