Broadbridge Heath Major Highway Improvements - Planned night works for December 2019

In order to undertake surfacing works and complete critical works on the roundabouts in the area there will be planned night works commencing during the next few weeks. This will ensure that traffic is still able to navigate the area during conventional school and working/commuting hours. These planned works are scheduled to commence in 3 main areas on the dates and times detailed below:- Newbridge Roundabout - preliminary works are required on the traffic islands and footways in preparation for road surfacing and white lining works. This will involve the use of single way working traffic signals overnight around the roundabout and the closure of the new connector road during the times specified. This has been scheduled nightly from Monday 25th November until Friday 6th December between the hours of 20.00 – 06.00.

Tesco Roundabout and Road leading to Farthings Hill Roundabout- in order to undertake resurfacing works on the road, footpaths and roundabout, the section of road between Farthings Hill and Tesco (Wickhurst Lane roundabout) will be closed on the following dates and times. Saturday 7th December starting at 22.00 and finishing at 06.00 on Sunday 8th December. Sunday 8th December starting at 20.00 and finishing at 06.00 on Monday 9th December. Saturday 14th December starting at 22.00 and finishing at 06.00 on Sunday 15th December. Sunday 15th December starting at 20.00 and finishing at 06.00 on Monday 16th December. Special access arrangements have been made for night staff. After 06.00 traffic will be able to access the area.

Farthings Hill Roundabout – in order to undertake the surfacing and white lining work there will be local closures on the roundabout and slip roads with signed diversions deployed to enable traffic to access the area. This work will commence on Monday 9th December until Friday 13th December between 22.00 until 06.00.

We do aim to keep disruptions to a minimum however, this type of work will generate vibrations and noise at these locations so we will endeavour to ensure the more intrusive activities such as planing, the use of pneumatic drills, breakers and compaction equipment are completed early in the shift when possible and kept to a minimum.

Need for a new bus service for the village?

Local resident Ryan Maynes writes:

On Friday 9 th March, 2018, Arriva stopped running the X1 bus from Guildford to Horsham. This left four busses which cater for the BBH community – 63, 68, 93 and 100. Whilst all four are usually punctual, the latest weekday bus residents can catch from Horsham is around 7pm. The situation is even worse at weekends, with a limited service being ran by three of the companies on Saturdays, and only one operating on Sunday.

There are thousands of new homes being built in BBH, which means thousands more residents, as well as thousands more cars and numerous roadworks throughout the community. As a result, traffic has increased dramatically, not to mention the damage being done to the environment. With many of our residents facing a daily battle to get to the town centre, and those without a car struggling to access basic needs like hospitals, schools and employment, we want the council to introduce a new bus service, dedicated solely to BBH.

This bus would run at evenings and weekends, giving the area a much needed morale boost, allowing us to go to Horsham without worrying about how we will get home. By 2021 there will be thousands more residents here, yet the public transport is that of the tiny village BBH once was.

If you would like to get involved in the campaign, please contact Ryan Maynes at [email protected]

7 8 9 BBH Mag Sport News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: [email protected] FOOTBALL: Things are beginning to settle down in our new ground, all three pitches are holding up extremely well and despite the horrendous weather no games have so far been postponed although seeing some of our junior players shivering in the cold and wet maybe we should have, not because of the condition of the pitch but simply because it's just too cold and wet to be outside.

On the football front our first team have struggled in recent weeks mainly as a result of having too many senior players injured at the same time and the team which started the season so well has slipped to 14th place in the division, hopefully our luck will change soon as players return to full fitness. Despite results though our attendances at home games is one of the best in the league with an average of approx 150 people coming through the turnstile including a lot of our junior section players, managers and coaches coming to cheer on the Bears.

The juniors are well into their season now with players from 6 years to 16 years of age, the Under 13s are doing particular well both on Saturdays in the Horsham Youth League and on Sundays in the Mid- League; at the time of writing the team are on a winning streak and are still in all three cup competitions they entered, let's hope that run continues and they bring home some silver-ware.

Several people have been in contact with the club about their concerns negotiating the temporary footpath to the front of the pavilion and asking when the club are going to install a more permanent pathway. We too share their concerns about the safety of this walkway but this was only ever a short-term solution installed by the District Council until permanent paths direct from the car park were installed. We had expected that access to be in place earlier in the year when they finished building the car park but it wasn't. We were then told it would be complete by October, then November and now January 2020. Unfortunately this is totally out of our control, we have raised out concerns about the safety of the footpath with the District Council and our District Councilor but apart from that there's not much we can do. All we ask is that people take care when using it.

Our next first team matches at The Countryside Stadium are as follow:

30th Nov Home v East Preston, Kick Off 3.00 14th Dec Home v Langney Wanderers, Kick Off 3.00 21st Dec Home v Horley Town, Kick Off 3.00

http://broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp

Understandably these will be shorter articles from me for the next few months but please don’t think we have curled up under our duvets. The summer outdoor sport may be in hibernation but the players have now gone indoors where the club is com- peting in the competitive 6-a-side League. Our opponents include Crawley, Three Bridges, Ifield and in the challenging Division 1, all clubs bigger and stronger than us but we are again hoping to punch above our weight. Last weekend was a good start when we beat Crawley comprehensively with Tom Endacott taking 4 wickets.

So, during the hibernation of the ground at the Top Common, it’s time to complete our end-of-season administration. It’s our AGM on the 22nd November and our Awards Evening on the 23rd December. Of course the Top Common won’t be completely put to bed as the Tennis Club will still be playing on the cold crisp days we could do with more of at the moment.

Finally, for those still needing their cricket fix, are currently in New Zealand if anyone’s travelling down that way or you have SKY Sports.

Politics and Religion Shouldn’t Mix? Wrong! Politics and religion should and must mix – and more specifically politicians shouldn’t be afraid of scrutiny by Christians and Christians shouldn’t confine themselves to the “spiritual”. As we face another general election this month and some of the biggest decisions of our generation – and ones that will affect the generations after us – as well as the approach to Christmas, I would ask the question: “what does our faith in Jesus require of us?” That is not the same as asking “who would Jesus vote for?” – that is still very much for each individual to decide! Jesus was very much concerned with the physical world as well as the spiritual – he had a lot to say about relationships, greed, money, oppression, equality, poverty and fairness; which are all things very relevant to us today in modern Britain. Those of us who have faith in Jesus should be displaying the same concern. Jesus himself was born into poverty, he was a refugee before moving to Nazareth, he knew what it was to be constantly moving and without a roof over his head, and he knew what it was to be persecuted by the authorities. Hardly surprising then that he cares so deeply for the poor, vulnerable and marginalised. So as I think about my vote, I’ll be thinking about what will best improve the position of the poor and homeless, will best protect and welcome the refugee and outsider and will show compassion and vision for the future of our country. And whatever happens on the 12th, I hope you have a peaceful and blessed Christmas and that you feel very welcome to come to any of our services to celebrate once again the birth of Jesus. All the details are on our website. Brian ———————————

Refurbishment of the Village Centre.

Work finally got underway at the end of September with the first phase being started. This will entail the Social Club moving into the old Sea Cadet area. Building work is currently progressing well and Social Club will be ready to open in January. Entry to the new Social Club will now be on the south side of the building. The next phase of works will see the old Social Club being converted into a smaller hall and a large meeting room created. This work should hopefully be completed by the end of March which will then see the last section of work being started with the main hall receiving some over due modernisation. Hopefully the project will be completed by the end of June 2020. All the electrics and heating which dates back to original opening are in process of being replaced and more energy efficient lighting being installed as well. We will also have improved Broadband through out the building.

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath

Can you afford your care?

Are you paying to have care, either in a care home or in your own home? How confident are you that your money won’t run out? Will you have to sell your own home to pay for care?

At this time of year families tend to get together, and it’s then we may realise a family member isn’t managing as well as we thought they were. So often, the need for care comes suddenly, and the first priority has to be where and how to provide care. However, don’t overlook the need to plan finances as if you are self-funding, your savings may go down fast. Too many people approach us for advice when the money is already running out, by which time it’s too late to do anything about it. As soon as the right care is in place, that’s the time to make sure the ability to pay for it is guaranteed. If you can plan ahead, even better. The Local Authority may pay if you can’t, but you may have less choice about where you are cared for. If you start out paying for your care, you risk that if the Local Authority step in later, they may not be prepared to pay the fees for where you are. What happens then? Whether you are facing the prospect of needing care, have a loved one in hospital needing to sort out their next steps, or you’ve been settled in a care home for some time, make sure the money will last. In many cases our specialists have been able to arrange a guaranteed income for life, which could even remove the risk of the money running out.
