My Dear Friends,

Many years ago, back in 2006, one of my parishioners, and good friend, worked as the general manager at Positive 89.3, an FM radio station that played contemporary Christian music in Freeport, Maine. She was relentless in trying to get me to listen to her radio station and to give up my secular music tastes. I eventually succumbed to her prayers and during a very difficult time in my priesthood five months after my ordination, I had a huge conversion that was brought on by prayer, fasting, sacrifices and my friend’s Christian music station. Over the years I have come to appreciate this kind of music, especially the Christian artists, , , , Chris Tomlin, Kutless, Mercy Me, , Jeremy Camp, Decemberadio and so many others. Many of these artists can be heard on KLOVE, a nationwide radio station that is on 106.9 on your FM dial here in Connecticut. I know many parishioners do listen to this station on a regular basis, as do I. There are some new artists that make great Christian music that you would hear more regularly on this station. It is so much better to sing along with music that glorifies God rather than denigrates women and glorifies drug use and promiscuity. The contemporary Christian music scene is not the Christian music of the 1970’s or 1980’s, as music played in those decades is not really contemporary anymore. Even though there were some good Christian music in those decades, the music and lyrics definitely had a different feel or vibe than the more mature Christian writing of the contemporary Christian artists. This upcoming Friday, July 16th, I have invited a man, Chris Vaum, who used to play my Life Teen Mass when I was pastor in Torrington, to play a little concert for us on the green on front of St. Jerome Church. We pray that it will be a sunny evening, so please come by at 6:30 pm with a basket, chairs, refreshments, whatever you want to bring and listen to a free concert of Christian music. It is an opportunity to listen to and be exposed to some music that you might not be familiar with as well as an opportunity for fellowship now that we are able to gather in a more relaxed setting. I hope to see many of you there. God bless, Fr. John
