The Institute of Terrestrial Ecology (ITE) was established in 1973, from the former Nature Conservancy's research stations and staff, joined later by the Institute of Tree Biology and the Culture Centre of Algae and Protozoa. ITE contributes to and draws upon the collective knowledge of the fourteen sister institutes which make up the Natural Environment Research Council, spanning all the environmental sciences. The Institute studies the factors determining the structure, composition and processes of land and freshwater systems, and of individual plant and animal species. It is developing a Sounder scientific basis for predicting and modelling environmental trends arising from natural or man-made change. The results of this research are available to those responsible for the protection, management and wise use of our natural resources. Nearly half of ITE'Swork is research commissioned by customers, such as the Nature Conservancy Council who require information for wildlife conservation, the Forestry Commission and the Department of the Environment. The early life stages are often the most vulnerable to heavy mortality due to environmental conditions. The deer ked (Lipoptena cervi Linnaeus, 1758) is an invasive insect ectoparasite of cervids that spends an important period of the life cycle outside host as immobile pupa. During winter, dark-coloured pupae drop off the host onto the snow, where they are exposed to environmental temperature variation and predation as long as the new snowfall provides shelter against these mortality factors. The other possible option is to passively sink into the snow, which is aided by morphology of pupae. Here, we experimentally studied passive snow sinking capacity of pupae of L. cervi. We show that pupae have a notable passive snow sinking capacity, which is the most likely explained by pupal morphology enabling solar energy absorption and pupal weight. The present results can be used when planning future studies and when evaluating possible predation risk and overall survival of this invasive ectoparasite species in changing environmental conditions. The species originated from the Far East and eastern Siberia. Besides wild animals, these ectoparasites can attack humans, companion animals, and livestock. These insects may also play a role in transmitting infectious diseases. The objective of this study was to confirm the presence of L. fortisetosa in north-eastern Poland and to characterize the examined population with the use of molecular methods. Deer keds were collected from six natural forests in the region of Warmia and Mazury. DNA of L. fortisetosa was extracted and subjected to molecular studies. Two species of deer keds (Lipoptena cervi and L. fortisetosa) were obtained in each location during field research. There were no differences in the sex distribution of these two ectoparasite species. During the research, more L. cervi than L. fortisetosa specimens were obtained. The studied insects were very closely related to specimens from Lithuania, the Czech Republic, and Japan. -

Teixeira1,5* Abstract Background: The subgenus Megatrypanum Hoare, 1964 of Trypanosoma Gruby, 1843 comprises trypanosomes of cervids and bovids from around the world. Here, the white-tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus (Zimmermann) and its ectoparasite, the deer ked Lipoptena mazamae Rondani, 1878 (hippoboscid fy), were surveyed for trypanosomes in Venezuela. Results: Haemoculturing unveiled 20% infected WTD, while 47% (7/15) of blood samples and 38% (11/29) of ked guts tested positive for the Megatrypanum-specifc TthCATL-PCR. CATL and SSU rRNA sequences uncovered a single species of trypanosome. Phylogeny based on SSU rRNA and gGAPDH sequences tightly cluster WTD trypanosomes from Venezuela and the USA, which were strongly supported as geographical variants of the herein described Trypa- nosoma (Megatrypanum) trinaperronei n. sp. In our analyses, the new species was closest to Trypanosoma sp. D30 from fallow deer (Germany), both nested into TthII alongside other trypanosomes from cervids (North American elk and European fallow, red and sika deer), and bovids (cattle, antelopes and sheep). Insights into the life-cycle of T. trinaper- ronei n. sp. were obtained from early haemocultures of deer blood and co-culture with mammalian and insect cells showing fagellates resembling Megatrypanum trypanosomes previously reported in deer blood, and deer ked guts. -

This bibliography lists, up to the end of 1970, about 800 references relating to the batflies or Streblidae and Nycteribiidae. Annotations are given regarding the contents, dates of publication and other information of the references listed. A subject index is appended. The following bibliography is the result of an attempt to catalogue and partly digest all the literature (published up to the end of 1970) relating to the Systematics and other aspects of the 2 small dipterous families of batflies, i.e., Streblidae and Nycter ibiidae. The bibliography includes a list of about 800 references, with annotations, and a subject index. Soon after the start of the compilation of literature in 1960, it was found that many odd but often important records were scattered in books and other publica tions on travels, expeditions, speleology, mammalogy, parasitology, etc. A number of such publications are not available even in the largest entomological libraries and might well have been inadvertently overlooked. While some 50 additional references are provisionally omitted because of the lack of sufficient information, new con tributions on the subject are almost continuously coming out from various sources. This bibliography does not, therefore, pretend to be complete and exhaustive. The time and effort devoted toward the compilation would be worthwhile should this bibliography be of interest to its readers and the annotations and subject index be of benefit. The manuscript has been revised several times and it is hoped that not too many errors, omissions and other discrepancies have developed during the course of preparation. -

Sadoveanu 3, 700490, Iași ABSTRACT Investigations of four roe deer corpses were carried out from May until October 2014, in the Veterinary Forensic Laboratory and in the Parasitic Diseases Clinic, in the Iasi Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The roe deer were harvested by shooting during the trophy hunting season. The clinical examination of the shot specimens revealed the presence of a highly consistent number of extremely mobile apterous insects, spread on the face, head, neck, lateral body parts, abdominal regions, inguinal, perianal and, finally, all over the body. The corpses presented weakening, anemia and cutaneous modification conditions. Several dozen insects were prelevated in a glass recipient and preserved in 70º alcoholic solution in order to identify the ectoparasite species. The morphological characteristics included insects in the Diptera order, Hippoboscidae family, Lipoptena cervi species. These are highly hematophagous insects that by severe weakening are affecting the game health and trophy quality. Histological investigations of the skin revealed some inflammatory reactions caused by ectoparasite Lipoptena cervi. Lipoptena cervi was identified for the first time in Iasi County, Romania. -

Blood feeding ectoparasites such as ticks, lice and keds have a great capability to transmit pathogens throughout a wildlife system. Here, we use a semi-wild white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) population in an enclosed facility to better understand the role of high-density host populations with improved body conditions in facilitating parasite dynamics. As definitive hosts and breeding grounds for arthropods that may transmit blood-borne pathogens, this population may also be used as a sentinel system of pathogens in the ecosystem. This also mimics systems where populations are fragmented due to human encroachment or through specialized management techniques. We noted a significant increase in ectoparasitism by ticks (p=0.04) over a nine-year study period where deer were collected, and ticks quantified. Beginning in 2016 we implemented a comparison of quantification methods for ectoparasites in addition to ticks and noted that white-tailed deer within the enclosure were more likely to be parasitized by the neotropical deer ked (Lipoptena mazamae) than any tick or louse species. -

Although wild animals seem to be the preferred hosts of these parasitic arthropods, it is increasingly being noted that humans are also directly threatened by their bites. Skin lesions evolving after Lipoptena bites are painful and often lead to the development of inflammation of the skin.
