The King and I" is produced through arrangements with the Rodgers and Hammerstein Library.
West Valley Box Office, Saratoga Civic Theatre C/O Jean Hutchins 13777 Fruitvale Ave. 1411 Redmond Rd. Saratoga, CA San Jose, CA 95120 408-741-9508 408-268-3777 1 Hour Before Curtain
PLEASE NOTE: By order of the City Council and the Fire Marshall, smoking, refreshments and recording or taking photographs during performances are not permitted. From the Director:
The more I learned about "The King And I", the more fascinated I became. A lot of people do not realize that this play is a romanticized story about real people and real events in history.
"The King And I" is based on the book, "Anna And The King Of Siam", by Margaret Landon.
The book was eventually read by the wives of Rodgers & Hammerstein, who brought it to the attention of their husbands. However, it wasn't until Gertrude Lawrence asked them to write a play based on the book as a vehicle for her, that they decided to do it.
Anna Leonowens was a proud, resourceful and independent woman. '" From the age of fifteen she spent most of her life in India and Singapore. It was after the death of her husband, Tom, and the need to support her family, that she decided to open a school in Singapore for officer's children. It was this school which attracted the attention of the Siamese Consul, who had been instructed by the King of Siam to secure an English governess for the Royal Children. The King, Maha Mongkut, was a very brilliant man. When his throne was usurped by his older half-brother, he sought safety in the Buddhist priesthood. He became a scholar in Pali and Sanskrit. He studied English, French and Latin. He became a fine mathematician and an amateur astronomer. As King, he was caught in two worlds: the one he grew up in, and the one where he was a student of the modern world of civilization and science. He could be very cruel at times, and also very tender-hearted. But he was a man whom no one ever underestimated. He wished to bring to Siam what was good in the modern world. Anna Leonowens was part of that plan. However, she was more than he bargained for. Their influence was very evident in his oldest son, Prince Chululongkorn, whose reign as king brought freedom and major reform. He reorganized the whole system of government and the law courts. He built schools, transportation facilities and modernized the military. He freed political prisoners and established religious freedom. And, then, one day, he read this declaration:
"Let this our royal message to our people be proclaimed, and not as if we were doing a great and lordly thing, but our simple duty to our fellow men and subjects, that from the first day of January, 1872, slavery shall cease to be an institution in our country, and every man, woman and child shall hold themselves free-born citizens."
hope you enjoy the performance, and thank you for coming; for without you, the audience, there can be no theatre.

* Orchestra Manager WHO'S WHO IN OUR CAST
CATHERINE PETREK - Anna. We welcome Catherine back, this time to play the role she has wanted to play all her life. She started her singing career in high school and her directorial experience began in college. Since that time, Catherine has performed in leading roles with Opera San Jose, West Bay Opera and Gilbert & Sullivan Society of San Jose. And, of course, with West Valley Light Opera. You must remember her as Lalume in 'Kismet'. Last season, she directed 'The Merry Widow' for us. Catherine has recently played Thea in 'Fiorello', and Mrs. Anderson in 'A Little Night Music' for Foothill College. Her experience also includes other facets of theater, such as costume design and construction, stage crew, properties designer and stage manager, as well as directing. Catherine is a vocal teacher, and her husband John, is an airline pilot. Catherine couldn't be happier with this show. Not only is she playing the lead, but her daughter, Elizabeth Edgerton, and nephew French Clements, are also in the show. It's definitely a 'Family Affair' for this very talented 'Anna'.
DON MASUDA - The King. A newcomer to WVLOA, Don is a delight to work with and we welcome him with open arms. A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, he considers himself to be a Californian, having moved here when he was but a child. In real life, Don is the single parent of thirteen year old twin boys, and has been a third grade teacher in San Mateo for over twenty years. This experience makes him a natural to play the King of Siam, with over sixty children. It's no wonder they are so obedient. Since 1988, Don has been performing with TheatreWorks in Palo Alto, SJCLO, Foothill College, and Saratoga Drama Group. Of the many shows Don has performed in, his favorites are Ito in "Mame", and in "Pacific Overtures", a show he has done for both TheatreWorks and SJCLO. Don dedicates his performances in this production "To my Dad, whom I miss so much, and who is no longer part of the theatre audience, but is still out there ... somewhere ... watching me, supporting me, and loving me."
SUSAN SANDERS - Lady Thiang. Gracing our stage once again, in a role just made for her, Susan is doing a wonderful job as the imperious, but human, Lady Thiang. Many of you may remember her as the wonderful Bloody Mary in our South Pacific a few seasons ago, for which she received an ERMA award. Susan started her theatrical endeavours with WVLO as part of the ensemble in ''The Desert Song". Her talents have graced this stage in "Cabaret", "Annie Get Your Gun", "Nine", and "Kiss Me Kate" for Saratoga Drama Group, as well as "Anything Goes", "Fiddler On The Roof", "The Merry Widow", and "Man Of La Mancha", for WVLO. She takes vocal lessons with our very own Mrs. Anna, Catherine Petrek. Her husband, Gary, is also no stranger to this theater. Susan and Gary have a video filter company, Sanders Media Adventures. When not displaying her vitality on stage, Susan works for Apple Computer and tells us she is a computer 'Nerd'. We'd say she is a whiz, both in theater and the computer. Welcome back, Susan. LINDA HINTON - Tuptim. Linda started her theatrical experiences at the tender age of six, in her native Lincoln, Nebraska. The play was "The King And I", her role was that of Princess Ying Yaowlak, one of the royal children. After a twenty year hiatus, Linda returned to the theater here in the bay area. She has performed with TheaterWorks, The Magdelena Group in Berkeley, The San Jose State Opera Theatre Workshop, Palo Alto Players, Cal State Hayward, and Chanticleers in Castro Valley. Her roles have ranged from Snow White, Granny, Cinderella's Mother, Sleeping Beauty and Harp in "Into The Woods", to Nannetta in "Falstaff", to Babette in "La Cage Aux Folies". When asked what her favorite roles have been, Linda says, "All of them!". In everyday life, Linda is a research associate at Protein Design Labs, and as of April 10th of this year, she has been married to Vince Foecke. As a matter of fact, Linda joined the cast shortly after a dream honeymoon, sailing aboard the Queen Elizabeth to Europe. We are delighted to have her with us.
MATTHEW HARVEY - Prince Chululongkorn. Once again, the talented and versatile Matthew is in a WVLOA production. This is Matt's eighth show for us. He has appeared in 'Man Of La Mancha", "The Merry Widow", "Oklahoma", "The Music Man", "Fiddler On The Roof", "The Mystery Of Edwin Drood", and his unforgettable role of Jack in "Into The Woods". Matt is now attending Santa Clara University, where he has just completed his freshman year. He is perfectly suited for the part of the eldest of the King's children in this show. He is also doing double duty as the Angel George in the Small House of Uncle Thomas scene, no doubt heeding the lessons taught by his ballet teacher, Audrey King, at SCU. Following along with the prevalence of family members among "The King And I" company, Matt's younger brother, Mark, is another of the royal children. Watch out, Matt, one of these days, you and Mark may be in competition for the same roles.
JAY SOMERA - Lun Tha. A native of the Bay Area, Jay started his "involvement" with the theater at the ripe old age of six. He continued this involvement through his school years, adding directorial experience while in college. After a ten year break from theatrical endeavours, he re-discovered his performing talents. Since then, he has appeared in numerous productions for the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of San Jose. Jay has recently been seen as Calynx in GSSSJ's "Utopia Ltd.", and William in the North Valley Player's "How The Other Half \ / Loves". Jay is the director of several local Catholic Church-related choirs. In his every day life away from theater, Jay works in medical research at Stanford University. According to Jay, he never expected to be cast in the show and only came to auditions due to dire threats from a certain Assistant Director. We don't know if this is a true story, but, nevertheless, we are certainly happy to have Jay with us. FRENCH CLEMENTS - Louis Leonowens. French is a relative newcomer to performing having been in only one play before joining the cast of "The King And I". He was in the chorus of "Charlotte's Web", for the Cupertino Drama Conservatory earlier this year. He also understudied several other roles and ended up with the role of Gander when the original performer dropped out of the show two weeks before opening. Frenchie comes naturally to the performing arts though, having attended / many productions since the age of six, to watch Aunt Catherine Petrek in many operas and musicals, and cousin Karen Edgerton in the "Nutcracker". He is in the sixth grade at Kennedy Jr. High School, participating in the Super Six Program for gifted children, where the advanced curriculum includes foreign languages. Frenchie lives in Cupertino with Mom, Dad and little sister Iris. Aside from performing, Frenchie likes to cook, because he can eat what he makes. Sounds like a well rounded young man to us.
WHO'S WHO ON OUR STAFF STEVE LAMBERT - Director. After ten years away from the theater, we welcome Steve in his debut as director of "The King And I". Steve is a graduate of the University of Santa Clara, with a BA in Theater Arts. His experience includes acting and directing for theater groups throughout the Bay Area, including the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of San Jose, the Summer Shakespeare Festival at San Jose City College, and the former Community Players of Los Gatos/Saratoga. Steve and his wife, Linda, moved to New York City, where he performed professionally in the soap opera, "Another World". Other credits include "Chapter Two", "Easy Money", and the films "Rage of Angels", "My Favorite Year", and "The Muppets Take Manhattan". In keeping with the family tradition in this production, son David is one of the royal children, sister-in-law Judy Mecum is our costumer, brother-in-law Hugh Mecum is our Stage Manager, and niece Andrea Graves is on the Stage Crew. Not to be left out, daughter Thea is our best fan. Steve says New York City was fascinating, but he's happy to be back out here, and lucky us, we have him.
DORIS VANDER PUTTEN - Assistant Director. A great lady of the theater, Doris is perhaps most known as the ultimate Katisha in "The Mikado", a role she has played several times for the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of San Jose. Doris lists this role, as well as Nurse Ratchett in "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" for Theaterwest in Los Gatos, as her favorite roles. Her many facets in theater include directing for the Santa Clara Players, singing for several Bay Area opera companies, many roles in musicals, dramas, and comedies for local theater groups including WVLOA, SDG, Community Players of Los Gatos/Saratoga, and the Montalvo Players. She has even been seen working backstage doing props, and as a memorable stage hand in a production of "Mr. Roberts". Son Bob is our Assistant Stage Manager. The entire family is or has been involved in the performing arts in one way or another. We imagine her three grand-daughters living in Texas will follow along in theater, too. Doris works for Shea Homes in San Jose. We are sure her co-workers enjoy being with her as much as we do. DAN PERCELL - Music & Choral Director. Dan was our Music and Co-Choral Director in 'The Merry Widow', and now is doing the same thing in 'The King & I'. His smiling face and pleasant personality makes him an absolute delight to work with. Dan has a BA in Music/Education from San Francisco State, and has worked with community theater groups since 1986, conducting over 22 musicals. In addition, Dan plays the trombone and tuba with the Redwood Symphony. In his spare time, Dan likes restoring VW's, scuba diving, camping, and back-packing with his wife, Karen, who is a choreographer for local theater groups. This production is a new experience for showman Dan, directing our wonderful orchestra in the wings. When he takes his bows, it will be for all the fine musicians as well as himself. It's good to have Dan back with us.
NANCY J. KWONG - Choreographer. Dear little Nancy is now Mrs. Edmond Kwong, who also happens to be in this show. Nancy was raised in a theatrical family. Her mom, Marge Hand, has been seen and heard in countless productions around the South Bay. Her dad, Edward Hand, is President of West Valley Light Opera and Technical Director for this show. Nancy started performing with us in 'Good News'. Then, 'Kiss Me Kate', 'Dames At Sea', and 'Rodgers & Hart'. Nancy has also choreographed for the Gaslighter Theater in Campbell, Sunnyvale Community Players and Theatre Works in Palo Alto. Nancy has a BA from California State Univery, at Chico, and a Masters in Speech Pathology from Jose State University. Our busy young lady also finds time to volunteer for Timpany Center and is a member of the Quota Club International, working for the speech and hearing impaired. Nancy used to run out for a little Chinese. Now, she just stays home, and a little Chinese comes to her. ..

Music & Lyrics by Hugh Martin & Ralph Blane.
"MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS" is one of those rare treasures: a homespun tale of fantastic proportions. It is about a fanciful time when families stuck together, girls fell in love with the boy next door, and father knew best. It is about fantasy and imagination. In short, it's about the 1904 World's Fair. In 1944, MGM released the film starring Judy Garland & Tom Drake. Then, in November, 1989, the musical opened at the Gershwin Theater in New York to recreate the magic from the movie. It's the perfect family musical with such nostalgic hits as "The Trolley Song"; "The Boy Next Door"; "Skip To My Lou"; the title song, and six new, additional songs written specifically for the New York production. Performances: Oct/Dec 93
"I DO!I ~O!'' Book & Lyrics by Tom Jones. Music by Harvey Schmidt.
"I DO! I DO!" is the story of a marriage. Based on "The Four-Poster" by Jan de Hartog, this is the story of Michael and Agnes ... a chronicle of life ... birth of their children ... quarrels ... money problems ... love ... all told in a warm sentimental style, sometimes with tongue-in-cheek, sometimes brassy and bold, alternately soft and touching, but always entertaining. The score includes "My Cup Runneth Over"; "Together Forever"; "Nobody's Perfect"; "What Makes a Woman"; and the title song. Performances: Mar/Apr 94
"MY FAIR LADY" Book & Lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner. Music by Frederick Lowe.
"'MY FAIR LADY" is universally hailed as the greatest musical ever written because of Lerner & Lowe's masterful musical adaptation of Shaw's "Pygmalion", it inspires a virtuoso performance from every member of the cast. Professor Higgins' successful transformation of Eliza Doolittle from a cockney gutter "sparrow" to an elegant society "swan" is the truimph of his career. With
a rousing and memorable score which includes such favorites as "The Rain In " I Spain", "With A Little Bit 0' Luck", "Wouldn't It Be Loverly", "Get Me To The Church On Time", and "On The Street Where You Live", this is the perfect musical for a light-hearted evening.
