Ten months ago, they signed left-hander Jon Lester to be their ace pitcher to start games like the opener of a championship series. Jake Arrieta, though, wasn't about to give up his title of staff ace, and he won 22 games during the regular season plus 2 more so far in the postseason. So what's a manager to do? Enjoy the best of both worlds, that's what. Cubs manager Joe Maddon announced Thursday that Lester will start Game 1 of the National League championship series Saturday with Arrieta going in Game 2. Really, it doesn't make all that much difference, as both will get two chances to help get the Cubs to the World Series. The real benefit may come from getting Arrieta an extra day of rest. "It kind of played out well," Maddon said. "I'm really comfortable with them both being starters in two games, possibly. That's what we're most comfortable with." Arrieta is far into uncharted territory as far as innings pitched goes. Including 2 starts in the postseason, he has thrown 243⅔ innings. His major-league best was 156⅔, set last year when he emerged as the ace of the Cubs' staff. In the postseason, Arrieta tossed a complete game last week in beating the Pittsburgh Pirates in the wild-card game. He looked somewhat mortal Monday in Game 3 of the division series, giving up 4 runs over 5⅔ innings.

On our recent visit to this sleepy little hamlet in upstate New York, B.T., U-belly and I found a little slice of heaven at the Baseball Hall of Fame. It was everything we expected, and more. I have touched the plaque of the one they called the Iron Horse, and I have been made whole. The hallowed halls of Cooperstown provided spine-tingling memories of baseball's days of yore. The halls fairly echoed with voices and sounds from yesteryear: "Say it ain't so, Joe." "Can't anybody here play this game?" "Play ball!" "I love Brian Piccolo." (Oops, wrong museum.) "I am the greatest of all time." (U-belly's favorite.) "I should make more money than the president, I had a better year." "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?" Though we’re heading into the final month of the season, there are still plenty of twists and turns ahead on the road to Omaha and the 2009 NCAA College World Series. The NCAA will soon be announcing details of next month’s tournament selection announcements naming the regional host sites (May 24) and the 64-team tournament field (May 25). To date, four different teams have claimed the top spot in the NCBWA’s national Division I polls --- Arizona State, Georgia, LSU, and North Carolina. Several other teams have graced the No. 1 position in other national polls. The NCAA’s mid-April RPI listing has Cal State Fullerton leading the 301-team pack, with 19 teams sporting 25-win records through games of April 12. For the record, New Mexico State tops the wins list with a 30-6 mark. As the conference races heat up from coast to coast, the NCBWA will begin the process for naming its All- America teams and the Divk Howser Trophy (see below). We will have a form going out to conference offices and Division I independents in coming days. Last year’s NCBWA-selected team included 56 outstanding baseball athletes, and we want to have the names of all deserving players on the table for consideration for this year’s awards.

    Major League Baseball’s I-Team The I-Team is composed of players whose names contain enough unique letters to spell the team(s) for which they played. To select the team, the all-time roster for each franchise was compared to both its current name as well as the one in use when each player was a member of the team. For example, a member of the Dodgers franchise would be compared to both that moniker (regardless of the years when they played) as well as alternate names, such as the Robins, Superbas, Bridegrooms, etc., if they played during seasons when those other identities were used. However, if a franchise relocated and changed its name, the rosters would only be compared to the team name used when each respective player was a member. Using another illustration, those who played for the Senators from 1901 to 1960 were not compared to the Twins name, and vice versa. Finally, the most common name for each player was used (as determined by baseball- reference.com’s database). For example, Whitey Ford was used, not Edward Ford.
