Presidents Ramblings

Ahh October… Bathurst, warm weather, daylight saving and ummm Bathurst… What more can a man ask for?

For those going to the Toowoomba rally next March, the rally info pack came out. Prices are very reasonable, with an interesting range of events. Entries close 31 December, so if your interested in attending and haven’t yet registered, please see me urgently!

On the car front, my fleet is running….how well, I am unsure as I have had little time to get them out. I took the goddess to the pre Bay to Birdwood lunch and it ran like clockwork! My blue Prefect is up for sale (and hopefully sold before you read this), the Thames is in for a paint touch-up and my CF starts, stops and does everything else I ask of it! Soon I will be working on my caravan to make sure it’s ready for the Qld trip….. yes, it is another 5 ish months away, but knowing how time has flown this year (again), I need to start soon, or I will be up the proverbial creek!

Looking forward, the next few club runs are Jim & Graces Mystery run later this month, the Bunnings BBQ and Lobethal picnic in November, and our Xmas lunch on the 8th Dec at the Challa… more details to follow.

Yours in small Fording

Russell

the Editor’s Desk EMAIL ADDRESS: [email protected]

Hello everyone Well another month has slipped by and it’s already less than 80 days to Christmas day, the pageant is just around the corner and that means Easter eggs will be in stores in a very short time? Any way we had the Bay to Birdwood lunch and as usual food was the main topic of the meeting. The lunch was well attended and enjoyed by all, it was great to be running around Glenelg in the Ute in readiness for the b to b. The next day we were unofficial runners but had a ball driving amongst all the other cars. We eventually joined up with our club members at Modbury and after the last cars filtered through we went for a coffee and cake. Next stop we visited our daughter who lives only a couple of kms away and picked up our grandson who were staying with us for a few nights. Grace continued on with our grandsons (Caleb & Jack). Caleb is learning to drive thanks to Nan so of course it was a good opportunity for Caleb to have a driving lessons Also this month a pretty bad wind storm did a number on our caravan carport roof [caraport]. So new metal purlins new roof sheet and re build the whole roof, not quite finished still waiting on flashings to be folded. Then it’s start on renewing the damaged pergola area, bugger this retirement lark we’re to bloody busy to enjoy it. Still better to be busy than bored. Hope you had a great month also and we’ll catch up at the meeting Wednesday

Cheers Grace & Jim Many thanks to those who contributed to the edition of the magazine. Closing date for publication 31st October 2018

ALL FORD DAY BY DON KISSOCK

Sunday 16th was All Ford Day to be held at Bonython Park. Before entering I decided to detail the Prefect. The tyres were pressure checked before being blackened, also the running boards were blackened. Under the bonnet was checked to see if it was clean and tidy. Shock horror! The battery has some corrosion and the painted clamp is starting to peel. After rectifying these problems it was check the inside for cleanliness. A quick vacuum was needed to put the inside in order. Then a look inside the boot revealed some dirt had got in there over a period of time. More vacuuming needed to clean it up. Finally a wash was needed and as Saturday was going to be a bad day I decided to was the prefect on Friday.

Sunday came and it was off to Bonython Park arriving about 8-50. It took 2 sets of traffic lights before I could turn right in to the park because of the queue of other entrants. Had some trouble finding the allotted space for the Prefect, but finally found it. After a while Jim and Bev and Mark and Miranda arrived. Off to collect the “goody” bag and the badge and look at some of the cars.

Judging commenced at 10 and it wasn't long before someone came and judged Jim's car. Then went off to judge another car somewhere else. After a while another couple of judges appeared to judge my car. It seemed to both Jim and me a bit odd that both cars were in the same category but had different judges. Later we discovered that unbeknown to us the cars had been put into 2 different categories. One into side valve and the other into any other Ford even though the entry stickers said the same category. Later it was time for the presentation of trophies. Imagine my surprise when they called out my name as the trophy winner.

DRIVE IT DAY By Don Kissock

September the 1st in South Australia is known as Drive it Day or old car day. It is the day when car club members are asked to drive their old car to show off to the public their old cars. There is a club in the Barossa that organises an event to showcase old cars. It is held at the Bethany oval in the Barossa Valley.

Cars are invited to arrive at 11am having travelled form far and wide. It is bring your own chair, table and food. There are no trophies or prizes. In preparation for the trip to Bethany my car was given a complete check up. Tyres were checked as was the oil and water. The weather forecast for September 1st was for a cool day with an occasional shower. On the morning of the 1st it looked like rain so a rain coat was packed, along with a chair and some lunch.

Leaving at approx 8-30 I arrived at Gawler around 9-45 with out any trouble, then continued on to the Lyndoch bakery to buy a cake for lunch. There were lots to choose from. Then headed on to Bethany.

Arriving at the oval I was asked to which club I belonged to which I replied ford eight and ten side valve. The marshal must have been a bit deaf as he thought I said the early side valve club and proceeded to point me in their direction. Having noticed Leon's car parked near by I parked along side the nearest tree, not far from Leon's car. Before I could get out of the car Leon was there and said it was good to see another Prefect. After a visit to the toilet we went and looked at the cars already there. There were all types including fords, holdens, , and triumphs and many more makes. There was also 2 mobile homes of vintage era. The weather was fine although I did use the wipers just before Gawler. After doing a second lap of the oval it was time for lunch before heading home.

Bay to Birdwood After preparation for the all Ford Day there wasn’t much to do to the Prefect in readiness for the Bay to Birdwood. Tyres were checked (including the spare) as was the oil and water and the Prefect was ready to roll. Went to the pre Bay to Birdwood luncheon organized by the club at the Morphett Arms hotel on the Saturday. Seniors meal ( soup and roast of the day ) was very good. Up at 6-30 on the day and after breakfast loaded our lunch and folding chairs into the Prefect. Then it was off to the start at West Beach. Wandered around and looked at the vehicles before watching the start. At approx 9-20 it was our turn to go. Traveling along Anzac Highway en route to Grote Street the cars moved along very nicely until we came to the intersection of Grote and West Terrace when because on the traffic lights we came to a standstill. Several cars vaporized or over heated due to the lots of red traffic lights along Grote Street and Wakefield Street. Possibly would have been much better if some or all of the intersections were controlled by S.A. Police. After clearing the Britannia roundabouts it was smooth sailing along Hackney Road to North East Road. Had a comfort stop at Macka’s at Collinswood, then proceeded to Birdwood. Traffic flowed reasonably until Modbury where it might have been quicker to get out and walk. Frank fully the Prefect didn’t over heat and by the time we reached the Millbrook Reservoir we were motoring along at a reasonable speed of 20mph. Finally we arrived at Birdwood after exactly 3hours from the time we left West Beach. Lunch was then had before a look around the museum display. There were only 3 club cars there (John Wylie’s ’49. Mark Howson’s escort Police van and our ’53.We finally headed for home. It was a reason- ably fast trip, only 1 and a half hours. Must have been all down hill??? Don Kissock

To the limit

New penalties for drivers caught speeding will be introduced in South Australia from 1 September.

There’ll be changes to both fine amounts and the number of demerit points for those caught speeding. In addition, the fines are now generally in 10km/h increments, rather than the previous 15km/h.

For offences:

Less than 10km/h: fines will drop from $260 to $150 but will attract two demerit points instead of just one.

10km/h to less than 20km/h: a fine of $330 will be incurred as well as three demerit points.

20 km/h to 29km/h: fines will increase to $670 and you’ll accrue five demerit points.

30km/h to 44km/h: a fine of $800 and seven demerit points.

Over 45km/h: there’s a $900 fine, nine demerit points and instant loss of licence.

A $60 Victims of Crime Levy applies to each offence also.

RAA’s Senior Legal Adivsor Graeme O'Dea says incurring demerit points is a bigger deterrent to breaking the law than fines, because of risk of losing your licence.

‘Penalties are a big part of enforcement and these changes more accurately reflect the risks of high-level speeding. What’s more, the lowering of low-speed offences shows the government is putting road safety before revenue raising,’ he says.

A guy took his girlfriend to her first football game. Afterward he asked her how she liked the game. "I liked it, but I couldn't understand why they were killing each other for 25 cents," she said. "What do you mean?" he asked. "Well, everyone kept yelling, 'Get the quarter back!'"

When her husband came by, she jumped out and stood before him with her red horns, long tail, and pitch- fork. "Who are you?" he asked. "I'm the Devil!" she responded. "Well, come on home with me," he said, "I married your sister!"

If I gave you two cats, and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?" Johnny: "Seven." Teacher: "Let me put it to you differently. If I gave you two apples, and another two apples and another two, how many would you have?" Johnny: "Six." Teacher: "Good. Now if I gave you two cats, and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?" Johnny: "Seven!" Teacher: "Johnny, where in the heck do you get seven from?!" Johnny: "Because I've already got a freaking cat!"

A blonde and a redhead have a ranch. They have just lost their bull. The women need to buy another, but only have $500. The redhead tells the blonde, "I will go to the market and see if I can find one for under that amount. If I can, I will send you a telegram." She goes to the market and finds one for $499. Having only one dollar left, she goes to the telegraph office and finds out that it costs one dollar per word. She is stumped on how to tell the blonde to bring the truck and trailer.

Finally, she tells the telegraph operator to send the word "comfortable." Skeptical, the operator asks, "How will she know to come with the trailer from just that word?" The redhead replies, "She's a blonde so she reads slow: 'Come for ta bull.'"

Testing a dynamo and checking output

You might need • Voltmeter • Spanners • Screwdrivers • Masking Tape • Pencil • 300mm Length of Heavy Cable with Crocodile Clips D terminal F terminal The dynamo is a simple direct-current generator with two output terminals. The dynamo is a robust and simple type of generator which was fitted to many earlier cars. Most modern cars are fitted with an alternator. If you suspect a fault in the dynamo, check all the connections to it with a circuit tester. Check also that the dynamo actually turns when the engine is running, and that the drive belt is adjusted to its correct tension, and is not slipping (See Checking, adjusting and refitting drive belts). Checking output with a voltmeter or tester Positive lead from the voltmeter to D terminal Negative lead from the volt meter to earth. Cable link between D F terminals. Checking dynamo output Connect the positive lead of the volt meter to the D terminal, and the negative lead to earth. Make these checks with a voltmeter if possible. If not, use a circuit tester or test lamp. The instructions are for a car with a negative (-) earth system. For a positive (+) earth system, read negative for posi- tive, and positive for negative.

24

Connect a voltmeter across the battery terminals while the engine is running. Have a helper rev the engine up from idling speed. The battery voltage should rise, or the tester lamp (or headlamps) should brighten. If it does not, and if checks on connections and the drive belt have been satisfactory, switch off the engine and disconnect the two cables from the endplate of the dynamo. The terminals are usually marked D and F. They are of different sizes, but label them if necessary, to avoid confusion. Use a short length of fairly heavy cable to clip the D and F terminals of the dynamo together. Start the engine and let it idle at not more than 1,000 rpm. Connect the positive lead of the voltmeter to the D terminal and the negative lead to earth. The meter should read about 14 volts (or the 12 volt bulb should shine brightly). If so, the dynamo is working. Testing the cables

Cable link between Dand F terminals. D and F leads fromthe dynamo Test the Dand F leadsat thecontrol-boxend. Positive voltmeterlead to dynamolead. Negative lead from- voltmeter to earth. Testing dynamo cables Reconnect the dynamo cables, leaving the short bridging cable in place. Disconnect the cables at the control-box end, where they are also labelled D and F. Start the engine and allow it to idle at not more than 1,000 rpm. Connect the positive lead from the voltmeter to the cable disconnected from the D terminal at the control box to see if it is sound. Then do the same with the cable from the F terminal at the control box. If the cables are sound, and if the dynamo is charging as previously checked, the meter should read about 14 volts and any fault must be in the control box.

25

Checking a low charge rate or failure to charge Negative lead from voltmeter to earth. Testing the D terminal without the cable link between D and F should result in a low reading. If the first output test (see left) showed that the dynamo was not charging, disconnect the D and F terminals at the dynamo endplate again, but remove the link between the terminals. Start the engine and have your helper run it up to 2,000 rpm (medium speed). If the car is not fitted with a tachometer (rev counter), 2,000 rpm is about the speed of the engine when the car is travelling at 30 mph in top gear. Reconnect the voltmeter between the D terminal and earth. If the voltage reading is 2 to 4 volts - enough to light a torch bulb but not a 12 volt car bulb in a circuit tester the fault is in the field coil or the brushes. If there is no voltage the fault is in the armature or the output brushes. In either case, check the brushes and commutator (See Replacing dynamo brushes). Source: How a Car Works

Barbs Handy Hints

To save space on the clothes line peg socks onto coat hangers first then hang on line.

Clean vases by filling them with water and dissolve 1 or 2 denture tablets in it.

Place a couple of slices of lemon in with cabbage when cooking – this will prevent the smell from going all through the house.

A good deterrent for cockroaches is to sprinkle highly scented talcum powder around the area.

To stop insects landing on freshly painted areas, add a drop or two of insect repellant to the can of paint.

If slugs are causing a problem around the house/garden, leave a little beer in the bottom of a can and sink it in the ground where the slugs appear – “They drown quite happily”
