The classical version considers the number of points in the intersection of two algebraic plane curves. It states that if we have two algebraic plane curves, dened over an algebraically closed eld and cut out by multi- variate polynomials of degrees n and m, then the number of points where these curves intersect is exactly nm if we count multiple intersections and intersections at innity. In Chapter 2 we dene the necessary terminology to state this theorem rigorously, give an elementary proof for the upper bound using resultants, and later prove the full Bézout's theorem. A very modest background should suce for understanding this chapter, for example the course Algebra II given at the University of Helsinki should cover most, if not all, of the prerequisites. In Chapter 3, we generalize Bézout's theorem to higher dimensional projective spaces. -

A COMPACTIFICATION OF M3 VIA K3 SURFACES MICHELA ARTEBANI Abstract. S. Kond¯odefined a birational period map from the moduli space of genus three curves to a moduli space of degree four polarized K3 surfaces. In this paper we extend the period map to a surjective morphism on a suitable compactification of M3 and describe its geometry. Introduction 14 Let V =| OP2 (4) |=∼ P be the space of plane quartics and V0 be the open subvariety of smooth curves. The degree four cyclic cover of the plane branched along a curve C ∈ V0 is a K3 surface equipped with an order four non-symplectic automorphism group. This construction defines a holomorphic period map: P0 : V0 −→ M, where V0 is the geometric quotient of V0 by the action of P GL(3) and M is a moduli space of polarized K3 surfaces. In [15] S. Kond¯oshows that P0 gives an isomorphism between V0 and the com- plement of two irreducible divisors Dn, Dh in M. Moreover, he proves that the generic points in Dn and Dh correspond to plane quartics with a node and to smooth hyperelliptic genus three curves respectively. The moduli space M is an arithmetic quotient of a six dimensional complex ball, hence a natural compactification is given by the Baily-Borel compactification M∗ (see [1]). On the other hand, geometric invariant theory provides a compact pro- jective variety V containing V0 as a dense subset, given by the categorical quotient of the semistable locus in V for the natural action of P GL(3). Shadow of a Cubic Surface
Faculteit B`etawetenschappen Shadow of a cubic surface Bachelor Thesis Rein Janssen Groesbeek Wiskunde en Natuurkunde Supervisors: Dr. Martijn Kool Departement Wiskunde Dr. Thomas Grimm ITF June 2020 Abstract 3 For a smooth cubic surface S in P we can cast a shadow from a point P 2 S that does not lie on one of the 27 lines of S onto a hyperplane H. The closure of this shadow is a smooth quartic curve. Conversely, from every smooth quartic curve we can reconstruct a smooth cubic surface whose closure of the shadow is this quartic curve. We will also present an algorithm to reconstruct the cubic surface from the bitangents of a quartic curve. The 27 lines of S together with the tangent space TP S at P are in correspondence with the 28 bitangents or hyperflexes of the smooth quartic shadow curve. Then a short discussion on F-theory is given to relate this geometry to physics. A cross-section of the set of unistochastic matrices of order three forms a deltoid. The set of possible traces of unitary matrices belonging to the group SU(3) forms a deltoid. The intersection of two deltoids parametrizes a family of Complex Hadamard matrices of order six. The set of all Simson lines of given triangle, form an envelope in the shape of a deltoid. This is known as the Steiner deltoid or Steiner's hypocycloid after Jakob Steiner who described the shape and symmetry of the curve in 1856. The envelope of the area bisectors of a triangle is a deltoid (in the broader sense defined above) with vertices at the midpoints of the medians. The sides of the deltoid are arcs of hyperbolas that are asymptotic to the triangle's sides. I. COUNTING ELLIPTIC CURVES WITH A RATIONAL N-ISOGENY FOR SMALL N BRANDON BOGGESS AND SOUMYA SANKAR Abstract. We count the number of rational elliptic curves of bounded naive height that have a rational N-isogeny, for N ∈ {2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 12, 16, 18}. For some N, this is done by generalizing a method of Harron and Snowden. For the remaining cases, we use the framework of Ellenberg, Satriano and Zureick-Brown, in which the naive height of an elliptic curve is the height of the corresponding point on a moduli stack. 1. Introduction ′ Let E be an elliptic curve over Q. An isogeny φ : E E between two elliptic curves is said to be cyclic ¯ → of degree N if Ker(φ)(Q) ∼= Z/NZ. Further, it is said to be rational if Ker(φ) is stable under the action of the absolute Galois group, GQ. A natural question one can ask is, how many elliptic curves over Q have a rational cyclic N-isogeny? Henceforth, we will omit the adjective ‘cyclic’, since these are the only types of isogenies we will consider. It is classically known that for N 10 and N = 12, 13, 16, 18, 25, there are infinitely many such elliptic curves. Thus we order them by naive≤ height. An elliptic curve E over Q has a unique minimal Weierstrass equation y2 = x3 + Ax + B where A, B Z and gcd(A3,B2) is not divisible by any 12th power. Tropical Curves Nathan Pflueger 24 February 2011 Abstract A tropical curve is a graph with specified edge lengths, some of which may be infinite. Various facts and attributes about algebraic curves have analogs for tropical curves. In this article, we focus on divisors and linear series, and prove the Riemann-Roch formula for divisors on tropical curves. We describe two ways in which algebraic curves may be transformed into tropical curves: by aboemas and by specialization on arithmetic surfaces. We discuss how the study of linear series on tropical curves can be used to obtain results about linear series on algebraic curves, and summarize several recent applications. In this paper we shall give new examples of plane curves C satisfying C — {P} = A1 for some point fECby using automorphisms of open surfaces. 1. In this paper we assume the ground field is an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Let C be an irreducible algebraic curve in P2. Then let us call C a curve of type I if C — {P} = A1 for some point PEC, and a curve of type II if C\L = Ax for some line L. Of course a curve of type II is of type I. Curves of type II have been studied by Abhyankar and Moh [1] and others. On the other hand, if the logarithmic Kodaira dimension of P2 — C is -oo or the automorphism group of P2 —■C is infinite dimensional, then C is of type I [3,6]. So the study of type I seems to be important, but only a few examples are known that are of type I and not of type II. Moreover the definitions of those examples are not so plain [4,5]. Here we shall give new examples by using automorphisms of open surfaces. 2. First we recall the properties of type I. Let (ex,...,et) be the sequence of the multiplicities of the infinitely near singular points of P in case C is of type I with degree d > 3. Then put t R = d2- 2 e2-e, + 1. Since a curve of type II is an image of a line by some automorphism of A2 [1], we see that R > 2 for this curve by the same argument as below. -

It typically happens that such singular points appear in couples, connected by a curve of hyperbolic singular points. We show that such a couple gives rise to two possible topological types as base of the integrable torus bundle, that we call pleat and flap. When the topological type is a flap, the system can have non- trivial monodromy, and this is equivalent to the existence in phase space of a lens space compatible with the singular Lagrangian foliation associated to the completely integrable system. We study stable rank two algebraic vector bundles on P and show that the family of bundles with fixed Chern classes and spectrum may have more than one irreducible component. We also produce a component where the generic bundle has a monad with ghost terms which cannot be deformed away. In the last century, Halphen and M. Noether attempted to classify smooth algebraic curves in P . They proceeded with the invariants d , g , the degree and genus, and worked their way up to d = 20. As the invariants grew larger, the number of components of the parameter space grew as well. Recent work of Gruson and Peskine has settled the question of which invariant pairs (d, g) are admissible. For a fixed pair (d, g), the question of determining the number of components of the parameter space is still intractable. For some values of (d, g) (for example [E-l], if d > g + 3) there is only one component. For other values, one may find many components including components which are nonreduced [M]. More recently, similar questions have been asked about algebraic vector bun- dles of rank two on P . We will restrict our attention to stable bundles a? with first Chern class c, = 0 (and second Chern class c2 = n, so that « is a positive integer and i? has no global sections). To study these, we have the invariants n, the a-invariant (which is equal to dim//"'(P , f(-2)) mod 2) and the spectrum. -
