Friendly Afternoon

Can't believe we're already so far into this year! We enjoyed a really lovely meal at the Old Thatch at the end of March, and hopefully we have a new member too!

There are one or two changes to our programme:

The April meeting has had to be put back to the 19th instead of the 12th, and the July outing (still to be decided, but possibly a river or canal trip) also to the 19th instead of the 12th. However, we have had an offer we can't refuse for our June 14th meeting, as Eric Osborn has kindly offered to host us once again for our 'Tea in the Garden' with the help of his daughter, Margaret. And what a garden to have tea in! Let's hope now that the weather will be kind too. Our meeting in April is Bingo, and the May one on the 10th will be our usual hilarious and often rowdy beetle drive, with, hopefully, another meal at a venue to be decided, on the 31st May. All are most welcome to come along to enjoy good company and a cuppa. We meet in the Village Hall from about 2.00 p.m. until 4.00 p.m.

The Vicar writes Vicar: Revd. Ros Roberts 813162.

'Love, Love Changes everything', is the song made famous by Michael Ball. Love is a strong emotion of affection and attachment; it has many nuances; being Platonic, romantic and familial. At its very best it is a virtue representing all human kindness, compassion, affection and charity, which is unselfish, unconditional and loyal. At its worst it can be abused by power and injustice to bring fear, pain and violence. If love changes everything why is our world so full of suffering and violence, there seems to be a shortage of 'good news'. Easter reminds us that God loves us; we read in John 3.16 ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life'. That his Son, Jesus shows us the true meaning of love because he died on the cross and overcame evil and darkness to bring us the, life, love and light of God. He teaches us that we should; 'love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself. This means that we can be the change that God wants us to be. It only takes one person to make a stand or to make a change. Captain Earnest Gordon was a prisoner of war in Burma. In the camp everyone fought for his own rights and it was filled with selfishness and despair. Ernest became very ill with dysentery and ulcers, and heard he had only a short time to live. Two prisoners, Dusty and Dinty who knew him found him a bed and began to care for him, washing him, feeding him and cleaning his wounds, after some time he began to get better. The love and care of these two men, at great cost to themselves saved Ernest from certain death. It was not because they said a lot about their faith but because they showed Jesus' love to do even the most unpleasant tasks cheerfully and kindly. Soon Ernest was able to help to tend other prisoners and learn about Jesus. The whole camp was transformed and hope grew strong and attitudes changed with charity, respect, care and love being shown to all, even their Japanese captors. As I write this it is Kindness Day when we are encouraged to do a random act of kindness for another person and not expect to be repaid, that reward comes later when someone shows us a random act of kindness. Just as dusty and Dinty did to a stranger I like this idea from Mother Teresa, Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person. –We can all do something for another person which will change despair to hope and make a difference. Be the change! God will surround you in His love. May the strength of God guide us. May the power of God preserve us. May the wisdom of God instruct us. May the hand of God protect us may the way of God direct us May the host of God shield us against the snares of the evil one and the temptations of the world. Padbury Parochial Church Council (PCC) Not to be confused with the Padbury Parish Council, which looks after the village, the PCC is the committee which is responsible for the running of the church. The Annual Meeting on Sunday 9th April resulted in some significant changes. Rev. Ros Roberts has been appointed by the Bishop of Buckingham as the Area Dean, with responsibilities in the wider Buckingham Area. This is in addition to her role as Vicar of Lenborough, which encompasses the four parishes of Adstock, Gawcott, Hillesden and Padbury. After 11 years of valued service as Church Warden, Paul Cresswell stood down but has been elected to the PCC. John Wrigley was re-elected as (the sole) Church Warden for Padbury. David Rasmussen, formerly PCC secretary, has stood down to concentrate on the supreme efforts which he and Neil Gibbard put in to maintaining the churchyard. The results of their work are clear for all to see in a superbly well-kept area. Thank you both. Chris Sutton has stood down as he is shortly to become President of Buckingham Rotary club, which is a job and a half in itself and he has our thanks for keeping the books up straight for the past three years. We are very pleased that Henry Paxton has agreed to join the PCC to take over this essential function. Also standing down from the PCC are Grace Tearle and Celia Fletcher and we are very grateful to them for their input into the thinking of the PCC. Both have said they will continue to support the church in whatever way they can. These changes will inevitability bring greater pressures on Ros and John and the PCC now has two vacancies in its possible complement of six elected members. Should you feel that you may be able to help the church in its work in the parish, please do contact either Ros or John.

Recently the National Trust celebrated a record number of visitors to Stowe during its 2016/17 season. The 200,000 visitor was greeted by a jubilant team Stowe of National Trust employees and volunteers who welcomed them at New Inn. Mary Draper, who is a regular visitor to Stowe, along with Chris Rush and their two dogs, were treated to lunch by the General Manager. Ms Draper, who is local to Stowe, remarked: ‘We come here quite often, as we’re National Trust members and it’s so dog friendly. We often have lunch in the café after our walk in the gardens. The dogs love it here, as do we.’ Jane Greenhaf, General Manager of Stowe and the Vale portfolio, described the moment as ‘An exciting time in Stowe’s history- this is the first time we have reached 200,000 visitors in one year, and every visit helps to secure Stowe’s future as one of the most magnificent landscape gardens in the world’. Visitors to Stowe in 2017 can expect to experience thrilling new exhibitions, learn about the Lost Worlds of Stowe, and a chance to camp in the gardens in the summer. Since acquiring the gardens from Stowe School in 1989, the National Trust have been undertaking a huge restoration project throughout the grounds, repairing and conserving the gardens, statues and temples for future generations to enjoy. Visitors to Stowe all contribute to the upkeep of Stowe, from using their membership cards or purchasing tickets, through to treating themselves to tea and cake- it all helps to maintain the fabric of Stowe. The restoration of the gardens at Stowe continues, with the support of visitors and National Trust members. News from St Mary's Our vicar, the Revd Ros Roberts has been appointed by the Bishop of Buckingham as Area Dean. This is clearly an honour, - but, you may ask, what does it mean?! Well, the Parish of Padbury is part of a group of churches called a ‘benefice’, which share a common priest (Revd Ros). Our benefice (Lenborough) is itself part of a bigger group covering all the churches in the county around the Buckingham area – the Buckingham Deanery. The role of the Area Dean is an important part of the governance of the Church in this area. It involves, amongst other things:  helping the Bishop in his oversight and care of the deanery  providing a supportive and collaborative leadership for mission and  ministry in the deanery  convening Chapter (a meeting of all clergy) and co-chairing Deanery Synod  supporting clergy and lay leaders of the parishes; We wish Ros well in this additional role – which will not detract from her current parochial duties In the continuing saga of the church roof, the plan prepared to replace the stolen lead with a form of stainless steel that looks identical has now been submitted to the Oxford Diocese for approval to allow this work to be done. We believe that this approval will be forthcoming. We still need to get formal permission from AVDC, though. Hopefully this will be given soon – but then the real work starts to raise the money!! We will be holding the annual Lamb Lunch in the Rectory garden on 14th May this year. Tickets are once again £10.00 per adult and £5.00 for children under 16. This is always a really enjoyable event for the village. Do come - and bring a party! Tickets from Revd Ros, Paul Cresswell or John Wrigley. The Church will be staging a big Village Fair on 17th June, held on the Playing Fields at Springfelds from 11.30am throughout the day. There will be many shopping opportunities, competitions, events and things to see. More details elsewhere in the Pump Much of the wooden fence round the church having been blown down in the recent gales, the decision was taken to replace it all with a Willow ‘Fedge’. This has now been done, so do go and look at it. The willow should start to grow and develop very quickly. We confidently expect that when fully established it will be a real and beautiful asset to that part of the village. Thanks to David Rasmussen and all who turned out to do all the necessary work. *A Fedge is a cross between a fence and a hedge. It can be used as an informal boundary between areas of garden, or the Church and Lodge Close. This should look very impressive after a year or two’s growth .Ed

"Over! And it is for Padbury Cricket Club who have decided to disband after several years of no play. St Mary's is delighted to be a beneficiary of this decision as the Club has decided to share its surplus funds with us by donating £516.59 to the roof fund. So this is sad news for village cricket, which has succumbed to other forms of amusement, but it is a contribution for we are very, very grateful. Thank you!"

Padbury Women’s Institute News Our February meeting was a real eye opener to the problems of the sick in Africa and Ken & June Brazier told us of the work of the Mercy Africa. Once a ferry, it has been transformed into a floating hospital, manned almost entirely by volunteers and it made us realise how much it and other similar ships were needed. In many cases, people walked for 3 weeks to get medical help and it is funded entirely by donation.

Sadly I wasn't able to attend our March meeting when we welcomed Cindy Janz who is the wife of Keith Janz, the very well-known mouth painter. Cindy took an interest in art following Keith's accident and reviewed art from a woman's point of view. I understand it was fascinating.

Moving forward we are having a craft evening in April making cards and in May, Malcolm Nelson will share the second episode of catching smugglers. Any visitors are most welcome to either of these meetings.

Elsewhere we hope you will see a notice of our Cocktail and Supper evening. Following a cocktail demonstration with samples for all to taste, supper will be served and there will be a licensed bar. This is on Friday 16th June starting at 6.30 for 7.00 and is open to all - family and friends, so save the date for a special evening. Details as to where you can obtain tickets are on the display advertisement.

As always for any further information about anything mentioned here or WI in general please call either:

Sue on 01296711626 or Angela on 01280 814398. We meet every 2nd Thursday of the month at 7,30pm in the Village hall.

A Helping Hand: The Pre-school committee and staff would like to say a big 'thank you' to Steven Dickens. He recently gave up a great deal of his time and also used his expertise to cut back our badly overgrown hedge. Not only did he cut it back but he is also disposed of a full trailer load of cuttings for us. We are all extremely grateful to him and wanted to acknowledge his kindness and generosity. They say if you want a job doing ask a busy person and this is so true. Not only do we have a tidy hedge but the pre-school is now visible from the road. Since we have such a lovely building, it seems only right to promote it. Moreover, we will now be able to put signage up to advertise our existence! Thank you so much Steven. We are all delighted!

Spaces available: If you would like to register your child for a place at Padbury Pre-school we have a few spaces available for an immediate start are also taking registrations for 2017/18 and beyond. Dog Walking around the village Everybody has a right to walk their dogs on public footpaths in the village, but they must be kept on a lead when in the vicinity of other dogs. It can be very intimidating to owners with nervous dogs when they are approached by out of control dogs.

Padbury Youth Club Well another fun filled few weeks have vanished into the ether – fun filled for who I hear myself cry! No but seriously we have had some really good nights at the club this session. Needless to say the chippy night was a great success – not for my husband who ended up with no tomato sauce for his own fish and chips after having volunteered (not!) to collect the order – thank you Andrew.

Huge thanks to Lou Smith who did a wonderful job helping the members decorate Mothers’ Day biscuits and donated all the ingredients and the beautiful gift bags. As I write we are getting ready for the Easter egg hunt for the last session before the Easter holidays – traditionally this is one of the best attended nights – I can’t think why! Please see below the rota for after Easter. This may be subject to change or cancellation as I am having an operation on my foot. We really hope to be able to run all these sessions but as always we would welcome volunteers to help.

We are still looking for a new Leader for the club. It is a paid position and we are prepared to send anybody who is interested on the Introduction to Youth Work course run by Action4Youth. The course is one day with lunch provided and is a general overview of running a youth club. I really would like to step down as I have done this for many years now. However I would be prepared to job share and still do the rota etc if someone was prepared to do every other week or even one in three would be a great help.

Padbury Tennis Club Winter League Padbury Tennis Club completed their last match of the winter campaign with a good win over Olney to secure a promotion position coming a strong second in Divison 5 of the Milton Keynes Tennis League. Played at home in blustery conditions on the afternoon of Saturday the 4th March, the match consisted of 8 sets, with 2 rubbers of Mixed Doubles followed by a rubber of Men's and a rubber of Ladies Doubles. The team for this match was Paul Sargent and Clair Flynn, and Lindsey Sanders playing with Chris Hill. At the half way stage, Padbury were 3-1 in sets up, with Chris and Lindsey taking what was to be a critical set for the eventual victory. Chris and Paul had a tough battle but eventually won their men's doubles rubber 6-3, 7-5 which secured the overall win just before Pictured: Dave Green (Capt), Lindsey Sanders, the rain set in. Final result 5-3 in sets. Paul Sargent, Clair Flynn, Chris Hill Finishing the league with 5 wins from 6, the team will start next winter with promotion to Division 4. Other players who have contributed are Michelle Becque, Greg Morris, Suzanne Heath plus Dave and Denise Green. Top player slot goes to Denise Dave and Paul with 8 rubbers won a piece, ranking these Padbury players in 7th to 9th place from 70 players in the league rankings The Padbury team will be the second Club team in an MK League 4th division with the Men's first team winning Division 5 in the Open Division, back last summer to gain another promotion. We now also have a 2nd team in the Open in Div.7 who finished mid table in their first season, captained by Ken Orledge. The Tennis Club has Club play at 7pm on Tuesdays and 4pm on Saturdays. June is now not that far away and the annual, countywide, Bucks Open Studios draws near. This year's event, which features the work of artists and makers, amateur and professional, in a wide variety of disciplines, takes place from Saturday 10th to Sunday 25th June. In Padbury, Peter Austin will be opening his studio in 2 Bennetts Close on Friday afternoons 16th and 23rd from 2.00 pm until 5.00 pm, and on the Saturdays and Sundays during the fortnight from 11.00 am until 5.00 pm. This has been another busy and successful past twelve months for Peter, with a show of his work in a gallery and features in national and international magazines. There will be a lot of new work to be seen in his studio, including paintings made following a recent visit to southern India and a series of small works inspired by Chesil Beach and the Fleet lagoon in Dorset, Peter's home county. For more information about his show and about Bucks Open Studios look out for directories in places such as libraries, the Old Gaol and some local shops. You can also go to www.bucksopenstudios.org.uk and www.axisweb.org/p/peteraustin to find out more.

Easter Lilies I do hope that those of you who wished to make a donation for an Easter Lily in remembrance of a loved one, managed to do so without a reminder from me in the last issue of the Pump! I also apologise for the fact that going into the Church for a quiet reflection is a little more difficult at present because it has to be kept locked more often than previously. As usual, my thanks go to the ever creative and reliable flower arranging team who transform the Church at Festival times and throughout the year. We are always looking for more arrangers to join us, please don’t be shy ‘Blossom’ 01280 815074

Once again, we have had a busy term with many visitors and visits. In February, the parents were invited to school to review their children’s work. This well-attended event was a great opportunity for the pupils to share their work with their parents. Parents were also able to sample the food offered to the pupils at lunch-time; this was well received and the good quality and variety on offer was much appreciated. All of the reception children went to the annual ‘ lambing’ visit to Rectory Farm in . They saw how the little newborns were helped to start breathing, how they are marked, and the proper use of elastic bands to dock tails (and other things)! Mrs Gooding was able to assist at a birth of triplets, which she did very eagerly. Then the children had time to cuddle and stroke the older lambs and to bottle feed the ones who needed extra help. It was a brilliant trip even if they weren’t able to bring any of them home with them. Before setting off they were able to stroke the cows, ride in a tractor cab and use a straw spreader. They probably all want to be farmers now! Both our Key Stage 2 classes have represented the school at a small Schools Handball Tournament hosted by Twyford School and ourselves. This was another opportunity for our children to mix with the other schools in a sporting capacity. Once again, we were proud of the way in which the children conducted themselves. Our oldest children visited the Natural History Museum in Oxford at the beginning of February as part of their Science Topic on ‘evolution and inheritance’ and thoroughly enjoyed their time there. There are so many different areas to cover and so many interesting items to see that the children think that they should go again! Our youngest children are looking forward to spoiling their mothers at a special’ Mother’s Day tea’ and then Easter will be upon us before we know it!
