ALHAARTH BAHRI ELNADIM INTIKHAB MARJU G1 win for Tamayuz

TAMAYUZ, a homebred Colt by ex Al Ishq made winning the G1 Prix Jean Prat look easy when he cruised up the inside rail to beat Raven’s Pass and Rio de la Plata by an easy 1 1/2 lengths. TAMAYUZ started his career by winning on his first two outings at Longchamp and Chantilly respectively in 2007. He began his 2008 campaign by winning the G3 Prix de Fontainebleau also at Longchamp in April. He will now be aimed at the INSIDE THIS G1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville in August. ISSUE:

TAMAYUZ is Nayef’s first G1 winner, which is very fitting, considering Nayef himself was also bred and stands at Shadwell. Tamayuz hails from a family steeped in Champions. Nayef showed great consistency and Apprentice Series 2 soundness throughout his career when winning the G1 , G1 Juddmonte International, G1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes and Great Day’s Racing 2 G1 . He is out of the brilliant Height of Fashion, herself the dam of champions NASHWAN and UNFUWAIN (sire of eight G1 winners including Derrinstown’s ). On Ascot Honours 3 the dam’s side, Al Ishq proved a steal at only IR£280,000 as a yearling because not only did she come from the family of Arc winning Urban Take Two…… 4 Sea (dam of GALILEO and BLACK SAM BELLAMY) and G1 Jockey Club winner ANABAA BLUE, classic winner KING’s BEST was added to this family of champions a year later. Derrinstown…..proud sponsors of the G2 Derby & G3 Derrinstown Stud Guineas Trials at Leopardstown This year’s Derrinstown Stud G2 Derby Trial and G3 Guineas Trial APPRENTICE SERIES took place at Leopardstown on Sunday 11th May in glorious sun- shine. With several classic contenders on show, the highly anticipated G2 Derby Trial was won by Moyglare Stud homebred 2008 CASUAL CONQUEST. He won this race in very impressive style beating his nearest rival, Washington Irving by six lengths while our supporting the industry own Moiqen was third. The winner settled at the rear of the field and that supports us after the final bend sprinted clear for an easy victory. He went on to finish third in this year’s behind and The Apprentice Series has been proudly was second in the . Several winners of this race have gone sponsored by Derrinstown for the past 16 years. on to become champions including Sadler’s Wells, , Galileo, The series is a way of encouraging Ireland’s High Chaparral, Yeats and last year’s winner Archipenko, who young riding talent. The series runs from April recently won the G1 Audemars Piguet QE II in Hong Kong and G2 and continues throughout the flat racing season Summer Mile Stakes at Ascot. and this year will conclude at Leopardstown in October. Last year’s series was won by Amy Parsons and she received prize bonds to the Casual Conquest (right) winning G2 value of €2000. Pat Morris won leading trainer Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial while Master of the winning Apprentice went to Tom McCourt. Derrinstown also give a ‘Rookie Of The Year’ award which went to Paul Townend.

Dermot Weld had a tremendous day as he not only saddled the win- ner of the Derby Trial, but he was also responsible for CARRIBEAN Trainers Points 1. J.P. Broderick 10 SUNSET, winner of the G3 1000 Guineas Trial. This was the filly’s 2. Marcus Callaghan 10 second G3 win of the season. She had to battle to keep her head in 3. Edward Lynam 10 front in the closing stages, but held off Katiyra by half a length while 4. J.S. Bolger 09 Intikhab’s daughter Indiana Gal took third. Carribean Sunset ran a close third in the Irish 1000 Guineas in May and was also placed in Scoring: 1st-5pts; 2nd-3pts; 3rd-2pts; 4th-1pt (as at 25 July, 2008) the G1 at Ascot. Finjaan Lands G3 Molcombe Stakes at glorious Goodwood

Homebred FINJAAN (Royal Applause ex Alhufoof) took the G3 Molcombe Stakes at Good- wood in fine style when holding off the late challenge of Bonnie Charlie (Intikhab) in a thrilling finish that went all the way to the wire. FINJAAN, having his first run since the end of May, is the second juvenile Pattern winner of the season for his sire Royal Applause. Richard Hills commented after the race “The front two went very quick but this horse has got a lot of speed and I knew he would finish”. Martin Dwyer who rides FINJAAN in all his work has said that he is one of the fastest two-year-olds he’s ridden. A delighted Marcus Tregoning added “He’s very quick and pretty useful”. He is entered in a host of Group races this year with the possibility of the G1 being his main target.

Royal Ascot Honours for AQLAAM AQLAAM opened day two of the Royal Ascot meeting in fine style by winning the G3 by an easy two lengths. Although the winner appeared a bit green when looking around him in the closing stages, he overcame his inexperience to win easily from Il Waard. A delighted Richard Hills reported after the race “this is a horse with a big future”, while his trainer William Haggas stated “We’ve always liked him, we’ll see if we can go up from here” (TDN). His sire Oasis Dream (by Shadwell’s Green Desert) has sired seven individual black-type winners from his first crop including Captain Gerrard, Starlit Sands, Visit, Young Pretender and Eastern Romance.

Homebred HAATEF, by Danzig ex Sayedat Alhadh, winner of last year’s G2 Diadem Stakes, was injured while being prepared for the G1 Golden Jubilee Stakes at Ascot. In a statement released by the Racing Post, Angus Gold, racing manager said “He cracked a hind cannon bone; he is out for this year. He’s four already and has won a G2 and he’s by Danzig so will make a stallion (Racing Post). Danzig, also sire of Derrinstown’s Elnadim, recorded his 200th stakes winner over the weekend with Olympic and ranks third on the all time list with just his own son Danehill and Sadler’s Wells having sired more stakes winners.

Haatef’s half sister SHIMAH (Storm Cat) won her maiden at the Curragh in May by an easy four lengths and went on to win the Listed Saoire Stakes from the useful Chintz by an unchallenged three lengths also at the Curragh. She will now be aimed at either the G2 Lowther Stakes or G1 Moyglare Stud Stakes in August. She is also a half sister to the G3 Athasi Stakes winner Walayef and Listed winner Ulfah.

Across the pond, homebred KAREEMAH (Peintre Celebre) seems to be making a big splash as she was awarded “TDN RISING STAR” status when she won her maiden at Maisons-Laffitte in July by a staggering fifteen lengths. This high profile filly is a half sister to the brilliant LAHUDOOD, who won the G1 Flower Bowl Invitational and G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf and was US Champion grass female last year. Not only that, but her third dam is Height of Fashion, dam of champions NASHWAN, UNFUWAIN and NAYEF.

RACINGER won the G3 Prix Messidor at Maisons-Laffitte reversing the placing with rival Spirito Del Vento who beat him into second in October last year in the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein. RACINGER made all over this mile contest and quickened to win by an easy 1 1/2 lengths.

Marju Honoured in Hong Kong Yet again, MARJU’s son VIVA PATACA received Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Champion Awards at this year’s ceremony in July. VIVA PATACA was awarded Middle-Distance Champion and Champion Stayer of 2007/2008. This year he won the G1 Hong Kong Gold Cup and was second in this year’s running of the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic. In 2007, VIVA PATACA also took the 2006/2007 Champion Middle Distance Award.

VIVA PATACA has now won five Group 1 events, one of these at International Group 1 level, a tremendous achievement for his sire MARJU. Comic, dam of VIVA PATACA also has a two year old by MARJU while his half sister Opera Comica was scanned Group 1 Hong Kong Derby successfully in foal to Marju. Group 1 Audemars Piguet QEII Cup Take two….Double Delight For MArju & elnadim MARJALINA, a daughter of Marju won the G3 Park Express Stakes at the Curragh in March. This tough filly showed her greenness after missing the break and wandering under pressure in the closing stages, but she held on to beat Savethisdanceforme. LOVE INTRIGUE also scooped G3 honours when taking the Premio Carlo Chiesa at Roma racecourse in Italy in April. She was outpaced early on but made a strong run from the back to beat Eastern Romance by half a length.

VIVA PATACA, a five time G1 winner by Marju, was placed in this year’s running of the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Nad Al Sheba and G1 Audemars Piguet QEII at Sha Tin. Having previously won the latter race twice, this consistent son of Marju finished third behind last year’s Derrinstown Derby Trial winner Archipenko. More recently, Viva Pataca was second in the G1 Citi Champions & Chater Cup at Sha Tin in May, a race he won in 2006. Also our own WATAR was placed in the G3 Prix La Force, while HIMARIYA, REMARQUE and DEFAILLANCE were all Listed placed in April and May. More recently, CHIN- CHON was placed in the G2 Prix Eugene Adam in July.

ELNADIM’S two fillies PASAR SILBANO & ELLETELLE both shone in the glorious sun at the Curragh on Sunday. PASAR SILBANO kicked off the first race on the card when winning the Listed Curragh Stakes over 5F. PASAR SILBANO held a prominent position before taking the lead a furlong out and went on to win by 3/4 of a length from Call Me Alice. Her trainer Ger Lyons stated after the race that her next likely target is the Goffs Million also at the Curragh which is what she was originally bought for. Ger Lyons also sent out ELLETELLE to win the Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mimosa Stakes two hours later. In a thrilling finish, ELLETELLE made her challenge with 100 yards remaining and managed to hold off Aleagueoftheirown who made a late dash for the line. ELLETELLE was successful in last year’s G2 at Royal Ascot and finished third in Newmarket’s G2 Cherry Hinton Stakes and G1 Phoenix Stakes during her 2007 campaign. ELNADIM, Danzig’s European Champion Sprinter, is also the sire of WI DUD who won the G2 and was placed in the G1 Middle Park Stakes and G3 Champagne Stakes and CALDRA, who won the G3 Autumn Stakes by five lengths and the Listed Stardom Stakes at Goodwood. AL QASI also won the G3 Phoenix Sprint Stakes and was second in the G3 Hackwood Stakes.

INTIKHAB is also showing good form this season with plenty of black type performers including HOH MIKE, INDIANA

STAFF PROFILE Paul Moylan Paul Moylan has worked at Derrinstown for the past 8 years and holds the position of Assistant Stud Groom at Pickering Farm, one of Derrinstown’s four yearling yards. Paul is responsible for the wellbeing of Sheikh Hamdan’s yearlings and preparing them for pre-training. He assists in the overall care of the yearlings including feeding, exercise, veterinary etc. Notable winners which have come from Pickering include Eswarah (G1 Oaks), Alshakr (G2 Falmouth, G1 & G2 placed), Nafisah, Munir and Muwakleh.

Paul, originally from Kilkenny, completed a course at Kildaltan Agricultural College before working at Castlehyde Stud. He then went on the Irish National Stud Course in 1999 before doing yearling sales for Glenvale Stud and joined Derrinstown in 2000.

Paul has a keen interest in hurling and plays for Maynooth Senior Hurling Team. He also enjoys playing Golf and going racing. Paul lives with his girlfriend Rosie Keenan, who also works on Derrinstown’s Cowanstown Farm.
