In this report, an inventory of Tertiary reservoirs is made for the Gorredijk concession (Friesland, northern Netherlands). By using well, log and seismic data, the structural elements of the studied area are investigated. Thickness maps of the three Tertiary groups show a thickening trend towards the west. However, individual differences exist within the groups, implying basin shifts through the Tertiary Period. Gas migration would therefore be to the east, but timing is important due to the differences within each group. Indications of an erosive surface in the lower Tertiary Brussels Sand Member give more insight in the different Alpine phase pulses during the Tertiary. A large erosive event during the Miocene has eroded parts of the Upper Tertiary deposits. The associated angular unconformity, the ‘Mid Miocene Unconformity’, is shown not to be of tectonic but of sedimentary origin. Large Neogene delta foresets from the Eridanos deltaic system onlap on the Mid Miocene Unconformity. These delta deposits are so far only described to be found offshore. -

Palaeontologia Electronica palaeo-electronica.org A fish fauna from the lowermost Bartonian of the Transylvanian Basin, Romania Nicolae Trif, Vlad Codrea, and Viorel Arghiuș ABSTRACT A fish fauna newly discovered in the middle Eocene marine sediments cropping out near the village of Luna de Sus, Romania, completes the fossil record of the East- ern European region. Teeth belonging to 15 species of Chondrichthyes and two spe- cies of Actinopterygii are herein recorded from the lowermost Bartonian deposits. These Paleogene fish document a marine tropical environment of medium deep waters in the northwestern area of the Transylvanian Basin. The vertical distributions of extant equivalent taxa allow a sea depth estimation of 100 to 200 m. The warm climate is doc- umented by both the present faunal assemblage and previous palynological studies. It is important to note the presence of the scarcely known and poorly understood pycno- dont species Phacodus punctatus and of the oldest representative of Labridae from this Carpathian area. The diversity of the fauna was found to be average compared to some areas from Western Europe or North Africa, but it falls within the regional diver- sity range of the Eastern European localities. CALVERT MARINE MUSEUM www.calvertmarinemuseum.com 2 The Ecphora March 2020 Miocene Diatoms on Since I have so many fossils in my collection, I offered to clean, gold-coat, and do SEM on a few Miocene Shark Teeth shark teeth, not knowing what to expect. I was very surprised to find what appear to be inorganic imprints left behind by microorganisms in the serrations of a tooth (I did not see them on smooth parts of the tooth or on smooth-edged teeth). After a quick literature search, I believe that what I saw is an assortment of diatoms. -

The shark fauna of the Upper Cretaceous Hinoshima Formation (Santonian: 86.3–83.6 Ma) of the manuscriptHimenoura Group (Kamiamakusa, Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan) was investigated based on fossil shark teeth found at five localities: Himedo Park, Kugushima, Wadanohana, Higashiura, and Kotorigoe. A detailed geological survey and taxonomic analysis was undertaken, and the habitat, depositional environment, and associated mollusks of each locality were considered in the context of previous studies. Twenty-one species, 15 genera, 11 families, and 6 orders of fossil sharks are recognized from the localities. This assemblage is more diverse than has previously been reported for Japan, and Lamniformes and Hexanchiformes were abundant. Three categories of shark fauna are recognized: a coastal region (Himedo Park; probably a breeding site), the coast to the open sea (Kugushima and Wadanohana), and bottom-dwelling or near-seafloor fauna (Kugushima, Wadanohana, Higashiura, and Kotorigoe). -

Here we studied new fossil chondrichthyans from two localities, Río de Las Minas, and Sierra Dorotea, both in the Magallanes Region, southernmost Chile. In Río de Las Minas, the upper section of the Priabonian Loreto Formation have yielded material referable to the taxa Megascyliorhinus sp., Pristiophorus sp., Rhinoptera sp., and Callorhinchus sp. In Sierra Dorotea, middle-to-late Eocene levels of the Río Turbio Formation have provided teeth referable to the taxa Striatolamia macrota (Agassiz), Palaeohypotodus rutoti (Winkler), Squalus aff. weltoni Long, Carcharias sp., Paraorthacodus sp., Rhinoptera sp., and indeterminate Myliobatids. These new records show the presence of common chondrichtyan diversity along most of the Magallanes Basin. The new record of Paraorthacodus sp. and P. rutoti, support the extension of their respective biochrons in the Magallanes Basin and likely in the southeastern Pacific. A borehole was drilled at Rotterdam in 1955 as a demonstration during the E55 exhibition. Holoplank- tonic molluscs (pteropods) were found to be present in the interval 504.5-655.0 m below rotary table (= RT). The upper sample of Middle Eocene (Lutetian) age yielded just a few unidentifiable limacinids. The section between 507.5-607.0 m, of Early Eocene (Ypresian) age, yielded poorly preserved pteropods and demonstrated that the complete interval belongs to pteropod zone 9. Apart from the most abundant species, Camptoceratops priscus, which is the index taxon of pteropod zone 9, the section yielded Helico- noides mercinensis and Limacina taylori, which are known to accompany the index species. Two further limacinid species are described as new to science, viz. Limacina erasmiana sp. nov. and L. guersi sp. nov., to date not known from elsewhere in the North Sea Basin. The occurrence of L. pygmaea in a restricted interval (569.0-574.0 m-RT) is remarkable; it is generally considered to be of Lutetian age, but also is found in the Ypresian of Gan, southwest France. -
