Introduction

The orb-weaver spider genus Araniella (Chamberlin and Ivie 1942); currently includes 11 species, distributed in the Palearctic region (World Spider Catalogue 2015). Up to now, five species of the genus were recorded in China: A. cucur- bitina (Clerck, 1757), A. displicata (Hentz, 1847), A. inconspicua (Simon, 1874), A. jilinensis (Yin and Zhu 1994) and A. yaginumai Tanikawa, 1995 (Hu 1984, 2001; Guo 1985; Song 1987; Zhang 1987; Hu and Wu 1989; Chen and Gao 1990; Zhao 1993; Yin and Zhu 1994; Chang and Chang 1996; Song et al. 1997, 1999, 2001; Yin et al. 1997, 2012; Hou et al. 2007; Zhu and Zhang 2011). A new species of Araniella is described in this paper, from Gaoligong Mountains (Yunnan Province, south-west China) by the Sino-American Expeditions (1998– 2008). The type specimens are deposited in College of Life Sciences, Hunan Normal University (CLS) and some additional material will be deposited in the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco (CAS).

Specimens were kept in 75% ethanol. Epigyna were cleared in lactic acid for examination and stored in microvials with the specimens. Olympus SZX16 stereo microscope was used for specimen examination. Digital photographs were taken using a Canon Powershot G12 digital camera mounted on an Olympus SZX16

and compound focus images were generated using Helicon Focus software (3.10 Free). Leg measurements are given as: total length (femur, patella + tibia, meta- tarsus, tarsus). All measurements are in millimetres (mm). The following abbreviations are used: ALE: anterior lateral eyes, AME: anterior median eyes, C: conductor, CD: copulatory ducts, CO: copulatory opening, E: embolus, FD: fertilisation ducts, MA: median apophysis, MOA: median ocular area, PLE: posterior lateral eyes, PME: posterior median eyes, S: spermatheca, TA: terminal apophysis.

The specific name comes from Latin wordplicata , meaning pleated, referring to the shape of the conductor margins. Diagnosis. The male of Araniella plicata sp. nov resembles those of A. incon- spicua (Simon, 1874) (see Levi 1974; figure 37) in body shape and by having a wide conductor (C), but it can be distinguished from these species by the tip of MA covering the base of the embolus (E) in prolateral view (the tip of MA far away from the base of the embolus in prolateral view in A. inconspicua), and the TA 4 X. Mi and X. Peng

extremely ringed distally and its tip hook-shaped pointing opposite to the palpal patella (TA slightly ringed distally and with its tip pointing to the palpal patella in A. inconspicua), and the edge of the conductor serrated (smooth in A. inconspicua). The female epigynum is similar of those of A. displicata (Hentz) (see Levi 1974, figures 1–15) by the ringed wide scapus with a pocket near the tip (ventral view), but can be separated from these species by the narrow and constricted median plate (posterior view). Also the spermathecae (S) is ovoid and close to each other at anterior part in A. plicata sp. nov and kidney-shaped in A. inconspicua). Description. Male (holotype): Total length 4.45. Prosoma 2.15 long, 1.70 wide; opisthosoma 2.60 long, 1.65 wide. Carapace yellowish brown, cephalic region slightly elevated, cervical groove and thoratic groove obvious (Figure 1). Sternum yellowish brown; chelicerae yellowish brown, with four promarginal and three retromarginal teeth; gnathocoxae and labium yellowish brown. Legs yellowish brown, with several macrosetae, coxae I hooked. Opisthosoma pale yellow, dor- sum with three pairs of black spots at posterolateral margins (Figure 1). Eye sizes and interdistances: ALE 0.09, PLE 0.09, AME 0.11, PME 0.10; AME–AME 0.19, AME–ALE 0.19, PME–PME 0.08, PME–PLE 0.31, MOA 0.33 long with front width 0.38 and back width 0.28. Leg measurements: I 6.45 (1.90, 2.40, 1.40, 0.75), II 5.70 (1.75, 2.00, 1.25, 0.70), III 4.50 (1.50, 1.70, 0.80, 0.50), IV 5.55 (1.75, 1.90, 1.30, 0.60). Palp with three patellar bristles; MA spindly, slightly curved, pointed to cymbium; conductor extremely wide, pleated marginally and with a distal lobe close to palpal patella; embolus slender and long, with slightly curved tip; TA long, membranous and curled distally (Figures 3–4). Female (based on paratype GKJ013): Total length 6.10. Prosoma 2.85 long, 2.35 wide; opisthosoma 3.95 long, 3.25 wide. Colouration as in male, but without black spots at posterolateral margins (Figure 2). Eye sizes and interdistances: ALE 0.09, PLE 0.09, AME 0.13, PME 0.11; AME–AME 0.21, AME–ALE 0.38, PME–PME 0.11, PME–PLE 0.51, MOA 0.40 long with front width 0.49 and back width 0.38. Leg measurements: I 7.70 (2.20, 3.00, 1.70, 0.80), II 7.20 (2.15, 2.75, 1.55, 0.75), III 4.95 (1.55, 1.70, 0.85, 0.65), IV 6.90 (2.10, 2.60, 1.50, 0.70). Epigynum with grooved scape, spoon-like posteriorly; copulatory ducts twisted, spermathecae ovoid (Figures 5–7). Variation: Males, total length 4.30–4.55. Females, total length 6.10–6.90. Distribution: China: Yunnan Province. Downloaded by [Hunan Normal University], [Xian-Jin Peng] at 21:42 23 February 2016
