Startup Wizard ***About laptop vs. desktop settings: when users first began using JAWS, it was typically on a desktop computer with the type of keyboard that has a numpad, so using the Insert and numpad was the easiest way to execute commands. Now, most people use laptops, with compact keyboards that typically don’t have a numpad. Freedom Scientific added a laptop modifier key -- Caps Lock. You can use laptop commands on either a desktop or a laptop computer, but the default setting when you download JAWS initially is desktop, so if you want to be able to use the laptop modifier key (Caps Lock), you need to change this in the JAWS settings. You can access JAWS settings in an area called JAWS Startup Wizard. See below for instructions on how to change your settings for a beginner user.

JAWS 2019 Startup Wizard: Change your settings! ● Turn JAWS on ● Go to JAWS program ● Alt to get to menu bar ● Right arrow to get to Help menu ● Down arrow until you get to Startup Wizard, Enter to open ● Page 1: Improve Freedom Scientific Products ● Page 2: Change the rate of speech, punctuation, and typing echo (characters and words is best for beginners) ● Page 3: Choose when you want JAWS to initiate for your student -- logon screen is best! ● Page 4: Choose keyboard layout (laptop or desktop -- laptop if Student uses Caps as default JAWS key!); also choose “Use Virtual Ribbon menus” (this means that students can navigate the ribbon in Word similar to the old style of menu bar navigation in Word 2003 -- it’s more straightforward and I recommend this setting!) ● Page 5: Leave default settings ● Page 6: These settings relate to using Braille display; leave default if you are not using a display -- otherwise set output/input to UEB ● Page 7: These settings relate to using Braille display; leave default if you are not using a display -- otherwise consider turning off Flash Messages and set “Placement of Status Cells” to “none” ● Press Finish!
