BRIEF HISTORY Federal University of Uberlândia Library was established in 1976 with the merging of eight isolated local colleges’ collections, which was completed in 1978. In 1989, Library System of Federal University of Uberlândia (SISBI/UFU) was created, centralizing all acquisition activities and technical processing. Santa Mônica Library was the first large library to be built, it was inaugurated on November 7, 1991, to receive the collections of the first schools set up in Santa Mônica campus, namely: (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil and Chemical) Engineering, Law School, Arts, Philosophy, Economic Sciences and Business School. This library is called Santa Monica Central Library because it gathers all SISBI/UFU superior administration and sectors that develop the library services, such as: selection, acquisition, preparation, cataloging, classification and treatment of all informational material acquired for SISBI/UFU libraries. Second in size, Umuarama Sectoral Library was built in at the same time as Santa Mônica's and was soon opened on November 12, 1991. It received the collections of schools existing at that time in Umuarama campus: Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Agronomy Schools. Also contemporary to the above quoted ones, Physical Education Sectoral Library was opened on December 6, 1990, to receive the collection of the only existing school at that time, Physical Education School. In addition to these university libraries, a basic education library also composes SISBI/UFU, named Basic Education Sectoral Library, opened in December 1988, along with current UFU’s Basic Education School campus. Ituiutaba Sectoral Library was established in May 2007 to meet the information demand of FACIP (Pontal Integrated Sciences), as part of UFU expansion program* in Pontal Triângulo Mineiro to satisfy the demand of Administration, Biological Sciences, Accounting Sciences, Physics, Geography, History, Chemistry and Pedagogy programs, and later of Social Service and Production Engineering programs. After some changes, it is set up in the multipurpose building in FACIP complex, since 2011. Sectoral Library was established in April 2011 to support the campus (created back in 2010) information demand, by expanding UFU's expertise area, with the following programs: Agronomy, Information Systems and Surveying and Cartography Engineering. In July 2014, the library was transferred to a new multipurpose building in Monte Carmelo campus. Sectoral Library was also established in April 2011 to meet the campus (created back in 2010) information demand by expanding UFU's expertise area, with programs in Biotechnology, Food Engineering and Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. It is currently set up in the campus’ Administrative Center building which has individual and group study rooms, research desks, service sector, lockers and internal service rooms, besides the book collection. University Hospital Sectoral Library "Professor Ivan Miranda Vieira", the latest SISBI/UFU library, is a specialized library and was opened on November 21, 2012, for the purpose of providing residents, faculty, doctors, nurses and other health professionals with an adequate environment for study inside Uberlândia University Hospital (HCU), research works and online database, and scientific document exchange (COMUT). The library is currently installed in room 21, of the upper floor of building 2M, at Umuarama campus.

HUMAN RESOURCES

SISBI/UFU staff is comprised of technical and administrative positions in education: 20 librarians (ten in home services, six in the outer area and four in the administrative area); 67 administrative assistants; 21 outsourced employees and five trainees working in technical services, public services, furniture and physical space analysis, and formal and informal training for using catalog and available services.

SISBI/UFU COLLECTIONS DEVELOPMENT POLICY

Forming and developing collection are both are conducted by policies set between SISBI/UFU and representatives of basic, fundamental, technical education, undergraduate and graduate programs, aimed at the planned qualitative (adequacy of the collection to academic teaching programs, research, extension) and quantitative (related to use and availabity of collection ) growth, meeting MEC's demands.

SISBI/UFU libraries’ collection comprises informational material acquired by purchase, donation and/or exchange. Besides printed and electronic books, SISBI/UFU collection consists of other types of materials, such as sheet music, technical standards, CDs, DVDs, plays, vinyl records, cassette tapes, art catalogs and special collections of renowned authors and researchers, bibliophiles, personalities, among others: Special Collection, Jacy de Assis Special Collection, Aricy Curvello Special Collection, Yan Michalski Special Collection, Antonio Mercado Neto Special Collection, Litto Special Collection, Jodacil Damaceno Special Collection, Dr. Kerr Special Collection, Homero Santos Special Collection, Dr. Hélio Benicio Special Collection, Agriculture Special Collection, UFU Memory Special Collection, Texts and Theater Posters Special Collection, Art Special Collection Books and Rare Books Special Collection.

Every acquisition is made by UFU faculty and Academic Directory student representatives, according to the bibliographic consistency considering the update and the theoretical and practical aspects of training.

SISBI/UFU receives large amount of informational material donation. The donor must sign the "Informational Material Donation Agreement" which guarantees SISBI/UFU autonomy to shelve or not the works.

Exchange, another acquisition type, is performed only with periodicals published by UFU, available in printed version and according to the policy adopted in agreement with the publishers.

Each library Collection is arranged according to the campus knowledge area where the library is, except when faculty justifies the need for relocation of informational materials to another library, for the benefit of students.

SISBI/UFU aims to meet faculty, graduates and staff information needs, collaborating to the institutional trinomial of teaching, research and extension, defining criteria for collection updating and development, such as:

 to establish criteria for works selection by observing the quantity and quality, according to the programs characteristics and needs;  to permanently update the collection, allowing its growth and balance;  to set priorities and deadlines for the acquisition of informational materials;  to direct, to streamline and to manage financial resources;  to establish, to formalize and to manage the exchange of periodicals published by UFU;  to establish guidelines for the evaluation of collections;  to define policies for material disposal.

As for the collection arrangement, the informational material must be selected according to the following criteria:

 adequacy of the academic curriculum to the institution research lines;  content updating and quality;  amount (excess/shortage) of material on a same subject in the collection;  subject coverage/treatment;  justifiable cost–benefit ratio;  accessible language;  potential users;  material physical conditions;  original publications;  format compatible with existing equipment;  if it is a periodical publication, it must:

 not be available online with free access;  be indexed in some data base with high Quails (Capes) classification;  not cover multidisciplinary content.

In order to ensure a rational and balanced Collection growth, it is necessary to adopt quantitative and qualitative development criteria.

The qualitative development involves constant publication of the acquisition periods of informational material and demands the units in order to fulfill this assignment. And to ensure the quality of the selection process, faculty must:

 update basic and complementary bibliographies in pedagogical projects;

 request the purchase of bibliographies via SISBI/UFU electronic form (SIGAMI);

 observe and request the updating of existing works in the collection.

The quantitative development involves setting on the amount of copies of each title to be acquired. This criterion is defined according to the characteristics of each bibliographic material and the rules established by MEC1 which determine which books must be acquired according to the type of bibliography, that is:

 basic bibliography: a minimum of 3 titles, 1 copy for each 52 places/ per annum;

 complementary bibliography: a minimum of 5 titles, 2 copies of each of them.

The same instrument determines that the journal collection must be formed by at least 20 titles distributed among the main areas of the course, updated in the last 3 years, and may have printed or virtual access.

The replacement of lost and damaged works must be done in accordance to the criteria established by SISBI/UFU, taking into account the title demand, importance and value, number of existing copies, subject coverage by other titles and with the possibility of acquiring another updated similar title, if the work to be replaced is sold out.

1 Data from the new MEC revised instrument (August 2015). Cf. http://download.inep.gov.br/educacao_superior/avaliacao_cursos_graduacao/instrumentos/2015/inst rumento_c ursos_graduacao_publicacao_agosto_2015.pdf.

2 Since June/2015, after publicizing the procedures for MEC calculation, SISBI/UFU started to acquire one copy for each 8 places/annually.

SISBI/UFU evaluates its collection whenever necessary, by using quantitative and qualitative methods, ensuring the achievement of its objectives. After careful evaluation, the informational material may or may not be removed from the Collection.

For the disposal of the information material, a careful quantitative and qualitative analysis must be taken into account. A title disposal is only carried out after authorization of the faculty.

Qualitative analysis mainly observes the inadequacy of the content to the institution, physical damage beyond repair, outdated content and the excessive number of copies versus low demand.

Works not in use, are stored in the relocation room for a period of five years, before being discarded. Relocated works, which present demand for home loans or local consultation, return to the current stock immediately.

Technical processing of the entire collection is carried out according to international quality standards, such as: Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules - AACR2, 2nd revised edition, 2002; Universal Decimal Classification Table - CDU; Marc 21 format for bibliographic data (standardization for automated descriptive representation of documents) and Name Authority and Subject Headings, controlled by Getúlio Vargas Foundation Bibliodata Network, National Library and Library of Congress (LC).

Resources for collection arrangement and development are made available by state funding agencies, such as FAPEMIG, which, since 2006, has been providing specific funds, meeting the demands of Graduate Programs.

By means of this project resources, approximately 7,973 titles and 12,950 copies of books were acquired from 2006 to the end of 2014. More funds for Graduate Programs come from Union as well. At 2015, SISBI/UFU started acquiring electronic books, counting 2,170 titles available for entire UFU academic community.

AUTOMATED MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

SISBI/UFU started its automation process in 1994, and currently uses VIRTUA software, an integrated, modular, multiuser system that manages automated cataloging, query, circulation, and statistical services. Since October 2013, the system offers a new web interface, CHAMO.

In the address http://babao.dr.ufu.br:8080/, Virtua provides collection catalog consultation, self-management in renewals and reservations of material, availability/expiration notifications via email, as well as early loan expiration notifications. In loan and return activities, printed receipts are issued for transaction verification.

The Libraries have security system in their collections, safe for magnetic media, in accordance with American Association for the Disabled (ADA) standards, with light and audible alarm. The collection is also equipped with an identification device via radio frequency (RFID), which speeds up works circulation, organization and checking (inventory). Collection Reading is done through Digital Library Assistant equipment (DLA).

SISBI/UFU also uses other software developed locally for managing general administrative activities. In 2010, SIGAMI - (Information Acquisition Management System) was implemented in association with information analysts from Information Technology Center.

SISBI/UFU offers users the possibility of self-management of loan, return and works scanning services, avoiding breach of copyright. These activities are carried out through self-loan, self-returning and planetary scanner equipment, available since 2013.

In June, 2013, Santa Mônica Central Library and Umuarama Sectoral Library were equipped with videoconference technologies, which are available for the entire academic community.

Electronic book titles converted to digital format or originally produced in this format to be read on a computer or other devices. It considers e-books, audio books, and books in any format, but printed. . Ministry of Education. Higher Education Census 2015: Glossary. Brasília, DF, dez. 2015.
