Brett Eldredge to Headline 2018 Illinois State For Immediate Release Contacts: February 26, 2018 Rebecca Clark (217) 558-1546 Morgan Booth (217) 785-5485 ILLINOIS PROUD: BRETT ELDREDGE TO HEADLINE 2018 ILLINOIS STATE FAIR Edgar County Native, Country Music Superstar’s First Performance on Grandstand Stage SPRINGFIELD, IL –A native of Paris, Illinois, Brett Eldredge, will headline the Illinois State Fair Grandstand on Friday, August 17. His Illinois roots run deep as his second album is titled Illinois and he has videos set in his hometown and Wrigley Field. This powerhouse country star is sure to entertain concertgoers with his fun-loving, hilarious, yet sensitive personality. “The Illinois State Fair is eager to host Brett Eldredge,” says Luke Sailer, Acting State Fair Manager. “We are proud to have an Illinois native on the grandstand stage, especially in 2018, Illinois’ bicentennial year.” His current album, aptly self-titled, Brett Eldredge shows the different sides of Eldredge and reflects where he is in life right now. The album includes upbeat songs such as “Somethin’ I’m Good At,” and “Superhero,” to meaningful ballads including, “The Long Way,” and “Brother,” all of which Eldredge is a co-writer. This album is sure to follow the success of his first two albums, Bring You Back and Illinois, which combined to give him six #1 singles in row. Those include “Don’t Ya,” Lose My Mind,” and “Wanna Be That Song.” Building on the success of his 2014 win for CMA New Artist of the Year, Eldredge has been nominated for various other awards and co-hosted ABC’s CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock and was featured on “Forever Country,” a medley performed by a group of 30 different country artists. An opening act for Brett Eldredge will be announced at a later date. Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.

Gender on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart, 1996-2016 Jada Watson (University of Ottawa) [email protected] In May 2015 radio consultant Keith Hill revealed that country radio programmers have strict rules on how many female artists can be included in airplay rotation. Referring to females as the “tomatoes” of the country salad, Hill’s remarks have sparked debate about gender-representation in country music. This paper examines gender-related trends on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart between 1996 and 2016, aiming to investigate how female artists have performed on the charts over this two-decade period. Analyzing long-term trends in frequency distribution, this study uses statistical results to unpack assertions made about women’s marginal status in country music. Keywords: country music; gender; Billboard charts; radio Introduction: #TomatoGate In a 26 May 2015 interview with Russ Penuell of Country AirCheck on the subject of country radio scheduling and ratings, consultant Keith Hill spoke candidly about how female artists factor into the format’s airplay rotation: If you want to make ratings in Country radio, take females out. The reason is mainstream Country radio generates more quarter hours from female listeners at a rate of 70 to 75%, and women like male artists. I’m basing that not only on music tests from over the years, but more than 300 client radio stations. The expectation is we’re principally a male format with a smaller female component. I’ve got about 40 music databases in front of me and the percentage of females in the one with the most is 19%.
