WPR Welcomes New Whad'Ya Know? Announcer Stephanie Lee A self-professed "public radio kid" from Kentucky has joined WPR's resident raconteur, Michael Feldman, to match wits and quips as the new announcer for Feldman's show, Michael Feldman's Whad'Ya Know?

Stephanie Lee took over the announcer's seat in August and has since been awarding prizes and presenting the Town of the Week on the nationally syndicated weekly program.

Last spring Whad'Ya Know? Announcer Sara Nics departed the show for a public radio job in New York City. Stephanie received an unexpected audition when she was selected from the studio audience by Michael to read The Four Disclaimers at a live show in May. During a post-show chat with Michael, he invited her to formally audition to fill the recently vacated announcer position.

"With all of the options out there for people to consume, the fact that there are so many dedicated listeners to his show is really quite remarkable, and a huge testament to the incredible team at Whad'Ya Know? I'm so excited to get to work more with everyone in the months ahead," said Stephanie.

"Stephanie is smart, funny and way over-qualified for Whad'Ya Know?, so we're very glad to have her," said Michael.

Join Michael and Stephanie for a live Whad'Ya Know? show in Madison on September 26, October 17 or 24, or November 7, 14 or 21.

Five Food Questions for: Lori Skelton

Friday afternoons on Central Time, listeners enjoy recipes, cooking and cuisine during the regular "Food Friday" segment. WPR staffer Lori Skelton is a regular contributor to Food Friday, so we sat down with her for a Q&A about the fan-favorite topic of eating.

Many listeners would expect to hear you hosting music programming. What brought you to "Food Friday"? It's a carryover from all the times I subbed for Jean Feraca on Here on Earth. The Central Time team wanted to keep the "Food Friday" segment as part of the program, and I was asked to be a regular contributor. With one or two exceptions, I'm on the third Friday of every month.

How do you develop your ideas for "Food Friday" topics? Sometimes the team will ask me to focus on a topic; sometimes I suggest a favorite ingredient or dish. For September's artichoke program, that came about because I have NEVER cooked with artichokes and wanted to give myself a challenge.

What's your go-to cookbook or online resource for inspiration? I always consult "The Flavor Bible." It lists ingredients and all the flavor combinations that work well with each ingredient. My magazine sources are Food and Wine, Bon Appétit, and Cooks Illustrated. Online inspiration comes from epicurious.com, food52.com, and thekitchn.com.

Fall is a great time for ingredients. What are your favorites for fall cooking/eating? I'm falling in love with plums this year. Weston's Antique Apple Orchard in New Berlin even has damsons, a not-too-sweet British version, and I've used them in ice cream as well as a sauce for roast duck.

How can the audience send you their ideas, recipes, food folklore, etc.? Start with the Central Time on WPR Facebook page or the email [email protected]. If a topic, recipe, or suggestion falls outside of my usual segment, it might be picked up in another Central Time segment. I still like opening letters, so sending something in care of WPR, 821 University Ave., Madison, 53706 works too!

See Black Violin in Wausau or Eau Claire - Featured on NPR's Morning Edition

WPR is proud to sponsor Black Violin in concert at UW-Eau Claire on October 7 and at the Grand Theater in Wausau on October 8. The classical and hip hop duo was recently featured on NPR's Morning Edition, excerpted below:

Before they were introduced to the strings, Baptiste and Sylvester were kids who loved hip-hop. They met in their high school orchestra class, where they began to study classical music and learned to love the great composers.

"It started for me with Bach 'cause Bach is the equalizer, you know?" Sylvester says. "To me, Bach is the hardest thing you can play, because he exposes everything about you. He exposes your weaknesses and makes you work harder. I always think of Bach as, like, the closest composer to divinity."

Baptiste and Sylvester say that while classical music and hip-hop may seem worlds apart, both are meant to bring people together.
