When you bid, especially in competition, your hand should reflect what your bid says it shows. Say you and your partner are playing a system that requires sound opening bids – maybe 2/1 game force. There will be times when you pick up a hand that just looks like an opener to you despite the fact that it doesn’t fit your requirements for an opener. Before you pull a bid rather than a Pass from the bidding box, consider whether partner will be happy when you put your shapely but high-card deficient hand down as dummy, especially if you’re in a notrump game because you couldn’t find a trump fit.

    Indoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Arkansas claims heptathlon crown in fi nal event, 20th national championship — If Arkansas needed something to kick-start its second day at the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships, it got it early from junior Kevin Lazas. In the fi rst event to be decided on the second and fi nal day of the competition, the heptathlon, Lazas came into the concluding 1,000-me- ter race needing to fi nish within about 4.5 points of Wisconsin junior Japheth Cato to claim the title. “I gave it all I had,” Lazas said, who ended the race by falling across the fi nish line in exhaustion. “If I didn’t win, I would be mad, but there was nothing I could have done. I didn’t have anything left.” Thankfully for the Razorbacks, Lazas fi nished just 3.24 seconds behind Cato, enough to win the heptathlon by the slightest of margins (6,175 points-6,165 in the seven-event competition) and claim 10 points for his Razorbacks in the team competition. “We had a really good night last night, and I knew I had to come out and keep it going,” Lazas said. And as the day went on, the top-ranked Razorbacks indeed kept going. When they ended the night by setting a collegiate record in the 1,600-meter relay, they were simply padding the margin of victory on their fi rst NCAA indoor title since 2006. “To get this done, you need a special group of athletes,” said Arkansas head coach Chris Bucknam, who won his fi rst national champion- ship since arriving in Fayetteville in 2009.

    Monday, December 3, 2007 Volume 80, Number 11 Daily Bulletin 80th Fall North American Bridge Championships Editors: Brent Manley and Paul Linxwiler Mori squad wins NA Swiss The team led by Larry Mori had a strong last round to win the Keohane North American Swiss Teams with 127.5 victory points. Mori played with Leonard Melander, Kelley Hwang, Rick Kaye, Kazuo Furuta and Hiroki Yokoi. This was the first NABC victory for each of the team members except for Mori, who has won the event twice. It was his fifth NABC career win. With the win, Furuta and Yokoi became the first Japanese nationals to win an NABC event. In second with 123.6 VPs was the squad led by William Watson, whose teammates were Ed Barlow, Bill Harker, Ronald Powell, Yul Inn and Rob Stevens. Going into the last round, the team led by David Maidman led with 113. A last-round loss, however, dropped them to fourth with 120.9. Ken Cohen’s team was in second with 111, but they narrowly won their last round match to Roger Smith, who represents host District 21 on the ACBL Board of finish with 123 and third place.
