-2- General Troubleshooting

Star Wars Republic Commando was designed to run under Windows 98 SE, Millennium (ME), 2000, or XP with DirectX 9.0c. If the game unexpectedly freezes up, returns you to your desktop, or if you experience any other severe problems, you should try to properly shut down Windows and reboot your computer. (As a rule, you should never turn off your computer while the hard drive is active.) This will help prevent possible problems related to the error that you have experienced. It is especially important to reboot your computer before trying any of the troubleshooting tips included in this guide and before attempting to restart the game.

NOTE: If your computer reboots into Safe Mode, go to Shut Down Windows and choose Restart the Computer. This will put you back into Windows’ normal operating mode.

Why Can’t I Get the Launcher to Respond? * The Star Wars Republic Commando DVD may have been removed. * Your DVD-ROM drive may have stopped responding. * There may be a hardware conflict in your system. * The Star Wars Republic Commando DVD may have been placed in a CD-ROM drive. * The Star Wars Republic Commando DVD may be scratched or dirty. * Your computer may not be 100% DirectX 9.0c compatible.

Please consult DirectX Setup (Section 10) or DVD-ROM Drive Issues (Section 8) in this Troubleshooting Guide for more information.

Why isn’t my Sound Card or Display Adapter Listed in the System Analyzer? The System Analyzer in the Star Wars Republic Commando launcher requires DirectX 9.0c to properly detect and provide information regarding certain models of Sound Cards and Display Adapters. Because of this, your Sound Card or Display Adapter listing may not be displayed until you install DirectX 9.0c.

I Cannot Launch Star Wars Republic Commando. What Do I Do Now? * Check to see how much room is available on your hard drive to make sure that you have enough free space for Star Wars Republic Commando to run. It is recommended that you have at least 200 MB of free space after installing the game for the Windows swap/page file and save games. * Check to see if you have any other applications running, such as memory managers, screen savers, or virus protection programs. Please refer to Should I have Other Programs Running in the Background in this section for more information. * Check DirectX Setup (Section 10) in this Troubleshooting Guide for directions on how to find out if DirectX supports your computer hardware. * Check the settings for your firewall or Internet security program. Please refer to Configuring your Firewall or Internet Security Software in this section for more information. * Check that you have the latest video drivers available for your machine. See Video Issues (Section 5) for more information. * Check the Star Wars Republic Commando DVD to see if it is dirty or scratched. The DVD-ROM drive may be having trouble reading the DVD. Please check DVD-ROM Drive Issues (Section 8) for more information. * You may have a corrupted installation. Try uninstalling, and then reinstalling Star Wars Republic Commando. * If none of the suggestions above help, please check Unable to Launch the Game after Installation in Installation (Section 3).

What Should I Do If My Computer Goes to a Black Screen or Locks Up? If you end up at a black screen or the game appears to lock up, please press ALT-F4 before trying anything else. If this fails, press CTRL-ALT-DEL once and choose END TASK on Republic Commando, which should take you back to the desktop. Windows 2000 and XP users will need to click on Task Manager, and then choose END TASK. If you do not see a dialog box after pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL, press ENTER twice and this should take you back to the desktop. Then restart your computer and try running the game again.

Why Do I Keep Hearing Static in Star Wars Republic Commando? * Your sound card may not be fully DirectX compatible. Please look at DirectX Setup (Section 10) in this Troubleshooting Guide for information about how to check for DirectX compatibility. * You may need to update the drivers for your sound card. * Your volume may be turned up too loud in Windows. * Your amplified speakers may be plugged into speaker-out on your sound card.

Please consult Sound Issues (Section 6) in this Troubleshooting Guide for more information.

Should I Have Other Programs Running in the Background? Generally, we have found that it is not a good idea to run any other programs in the background while playing Star Wars Republic Commando. Please turn off any active screen savers while running this game, as they may interrupt the game and cause problems. Various video, sound, or memory problems may occur if other programs are running, including virus-detection utilities. You may need to disable or close programs that start automatically when Windows is started, such as the Microsoft Office Toolbar and the Live!Ware Creative Launcher. Some of these programs display icons on the system tray section of your taskbar. If you have icons on your taskbar, right-click on each of them and select the option to disable, unload, exit, or close them before running Star Wars Republic Commando. The next time you start your computer, these items will load once more and the icons will return. If you cannot disable them from the taskbar and you experience problems running Star Wars Republic Commando, we recommend that you consult Windows Help for information on how to remove shortcuts or how to keep other programs from running in the background.

Running on Low-End Systems When running Star Wars Republic Commando on a low-end system, you may experience some stuttering in the sound and graphics. This usually happens if other programs are running or your system resources are low. Freeing up system resources may improve performance. Check Performance (Section 4) in this troubleshooting guide for more performance tips.

Power Management If your computer is equipped with a Power Management feature, you may want to disable it. Please consult your computer's documentation or the manufacturer for assistance in doing this. When Power Management is enabled, the following problems may occur:

* The game may crash or go to a blue screen when sleep mode activates. * The Windows mouse cursor may not appear when the computer returns from sleep mode. * The monitor may go to a black screen while you are playing or when sitting at one screen for long periods of time.

Desktop Color Palette If you experience problems running the game, we recommend that you set your desktop Color Palette or Colors to True Color (32-bit). When running Star Wars Republic Commando with your desktop set to a color palette other than 32-bit, some video cards may experience problems launching the game or you may see graphic corruption. In most cases, switching to True Color (32-bit) solves these problems. To change your desktop color palette and resolution:

* Right-click on the desktop where there are not any icons. * Choose Properties from the shortcut menu. * Click on the Settings tab. * Windows 98/ME/2000: Look at Colors. * Choose True Color (32-bit). * Windows XP: Look at Color Quality. * Choose Highest (32-bit). * Click OK to close this window. * If your computer prompts you to, restart.

Task Switching and Windowed Mode Task Switching and Windowed mode are not supported in Star Wars Republic Commando.

Windows 2000 and XP Issues

Administrative Rights Some of the steps noted in this Troubleshooting Guide that require you to make adjustments to your system, such as setting up your monitor, will not be possible to complete unless you are logged onto the system with Administrative Rights. Without these rights, you may be unable to select the option because it is grayed out. You will be unable to install DirectX unless you are logged on with Administrative Rights.

Keyboard Functionality in Windows 2000 and XP When playing Star Wars Republic Commando on a Windows 2000 or XP system, pressing ALT, CTRL or SHIFT multiple times may bring up a Windows dialog box while playing the game. This is a function of Accessibility options. For information regarding disabling this feature, please consult Windows Help.

Out Of Virtual Memory Error in Windows 2000 or XP When playing Star Wars Republic Commando on a 256 MB system with Windows 2000 or XP, you may see an Out of Virtual Memory Error while playing or when exiting this game. This occurs in part because of the higher memory requirements for Windows 2000 and XP. If this occurs, we recommend that you exit the game and reboot your computer to clear the memory before playing again. If the problem persists, you may want to adjust your Page file settings to allow Windows to start the game with more virtual memory. Consult Windows Help for information on how to modify your Page file settings.

-3- Installation

You must have a DVD-ROM drive installed and configured properly in your system in order to install the DVD version of Star Wars Republic Commando.

Available Hard Drive Space on Drive C Installation requires hard drive space on your C drive even when you are installing to a different hard drive. This is due to a limitation in InstallShield, which requires uninstall information to be stored on the C drive. Because of this, you may see an error during installation stating that you do not have enough free space to install the game when there is ample room available in the install directory. If this occurs, you will need to free at least 20 MB on the C drive prior to installation.

Installing Star Wars Republic Commando in Windows 2000 or XP You must be logged in with local Administrator or Power User rights to properly install Star Wars Republic Commando on a Windows 2000 or XP system. After installing the game, you will be able to play the game on a Limited or Restricted User account. Administrator rights also allow you to update DirectX in these operating systems.

Installing Star Wars Republic Commando Please check the amount of available hard drive space on your system before installing Star Wars Republic Commando. Installation requires 2.0 GB of free hard drive space. We recommend that you have at least an additional 200 MB of free space available for the Windows swap/page file and save games. If you have too little free space on your hard drive after installing Star Wars Republic Commando, you may be unable to start the program.

Automatic installs to the default directory (C:\Program Files\LucasArts\Star Wars Republic Commando), does not put a shortcut on your desktop, and may install DirectX 9.0c during installation if it is not already installed on your system.

Custom installation will prompt you for the installation location, ask where to place shortcuts in the Start Menu, if you want a shortcut on your desktop, and whether you want to install DirectX 9.0c if it is not already installed on your system.

DVD Ejected During Install If the DVD is removed from the drive during installation at any time other than when prompted to switch to the next disc, the installation may be incomplete or the game may crash to the desktop. When this occurs, you may be unable to reinstall through the launcher. To reinstall the game, insert Disc 1 – Play Disc and run Setup, which is located in the GameData folder on this DVD. This will properly install the game.

Installing DirectX 9.0c You will be prompted to install DirectX 9.0c during the installation of Star Wars Republic Commando if it is not already installed on your system. DirectX 9.0c must be installed on the system to play the game.

Installing GameSpy Arcade You will be prompted to install GameSpy Arcade during the installation of Star Wars Republic Commando. GameSpy Arcade is the arcade for the Internet, where millions of gamers meet to play hundreds of online multiplayer games and free game demos. You must have Administrator rights in order to properly install GameSpy Arcade.

Component Transfer Error You may see a Component Transfer Error message when installing the game. If this occurs, you may be attempting to install to a location such as your DVD-ROM drive. Shortcut Does Not Appear on the Desktop You will be prompted to create a shortcut to Star Wars Republic Commando on your desktop during Custom Installation. The shortcut to the game may not be displayed on your desktop after installation if your system is configured for multiple users, with each person using a separate profile. If this occurs, you will need to navigate to the Windows Desktop folder and copy the shortcut to your current desktop or copy the shortcut from the Start Menu to your desktop.

Can I Move the Star Wars Republic Commando Folder After I Install? If you wish to move the Star Wars Republic Commando folder to a new folder, we recommend that you uninstall first, then reinstall to the new location. When uninstalling, make sure to choose Yes when prompted to keep your user profile so you do not lose your progress. Simply moving the folder will cause the uninstaller to be unable to find the program and you will need to manually uninstall the game.

-4- Performance

Performance Issues in Star Wars Republic Commando When running Star Wars Republic Commando on the minimum required system, you may experience the following issues:

* There may be stuttering in the voice and sound. * There may be pauses or hitching during the opening movie. * There may be a slight hitch in gameplay when sound effects play in the game. * Transitions may take a long time. * There may be slow downs or stuttering during gameplay.

This occurs most frequently when other programs are running or if your system resources are below 70%. Freeing up system resources may improve performance in the game. For more information, please refer to the Close All Other Programs Before Running Star Wars Republic Commando section below.

Improving Performance in Star Wars Republic Commando The following are a few suggestions that may free up system resources and improve performance in Star Wars Republic Commando.

To run Star Wars Republic Commando with optimal performance:

* No other programs should be running in the background. * System resources should be at least 85% free. * To check this: * Windows 98/ME: Right click on My Computer, choose Properties, choose the Performance tab, and check System Resources under Performance Status. * Windows 2000/XP: Press CTRL-ALT-DEL once, choose Task Manager, choose the Performance tab, and check CPU Usage. * There should be at least 200 MB of free hard disk space after installation. Adjusting Configuration Options for Optimal Performance Star Wars Republic Commando will analyze your system’s capabilities and adjust the in-game Graphics Options to give you the best visual quality for performance. If you experience performance issues when running Star Wars Republic Commando, we recommend that you lower the Graphics Quality setting to either Low or Lowest in the Graphics Options menu.

Choosing these Graphics Quality settings will adjust the following options:

* Lowest * Video Resolution = 640x480 * Texture Quality = Lowest * Character Detail = Low * Bumpmapping Quality = Low * Blur Effects = Off * Bloom Effects = None * Projectors = Off

* Low * Video Resolution = 640x480 * Texture Quality = Low * Character Detail = Medium * Bumpmapping Quality = Medium * Blur Effects = On * Bloom Effects = Low * Projectors = On * Squad Shadows = Off

Close All Other Programs Before Running Star Wars Republic Commando Please close all other programs before running Star Wars Republic Commando. This includes virus- scanning, word processing, and Internet programs. Simply disabling these programs will not always help, as the programs still use resources that are needed to run Star Wars Republic Commando. If you experience problems completely closing programs that are running, consult the documentation for those individual programs. This is a common problem when trying to completely disable virus-scanning software.

Performance Issues with Low-Cost DSL Packages Users of low-cost DSL packages may experience significant lag while playing Star Wars Republic Commando. This may be due to increased bandwidth restrictions placed on these types of accounts by the ISP. Some ISPs offer lower rates by not guaranteeing the 384KBps download and 128KBps upload minimum rates generally considered to be the standard for Broadband. These users may have experiences closer to Dial-up than Broadband. Please check with your ISP to determine how much bandwidth is guaranteed with your DSL service if you are experiencing these issues. -5- Video Issues

This section of the Troubleshooting Guide will provide you with information on problems encountered with specific video cards while running Star Wars Republic Commando. First check to see if your is listed in the Currently Supported Cards and section. If your chipset is supported but you are unable to resolve any video issues through this Troubleshooting Guide, please contact your hardware manufacturer for updated video drivers. We have included a list of web sites for downloading drivers for your specific card at the end of this document.

General Information and Troubleshooting Tips

Vertex Shader and Pixel Shader Capability You will be unable to play Star Wars Republic Commando on a graphics card without Vertex Shader and Pixel Shader (VS/PS) capabilities.

Full Scene Anti-Aliasing (FSAA) and Anisotropic Filtering Full Scene Anti-Aliasing (FSAA) and Anisotropic Filtering are considered advanced features, which require extra processing power and resources from your graphics cards. These features may adversely affect your framerate if your video card does not have the power to render them. If you experience low framerates with these features enabled, we recommend that you set Anti-Aliasing to Off in the Graphics Options menu, and disable Full Scene Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering in the Windows Display Properties.

Enabling FSAA in Star Wars Republic Commando The Full Scene Anti-Aliasing (FSAA) setting in Star Wars Republic Commando is controlled by the in- game FSAA option. Because of this, configuring FSAA in the manufacturer Control Panel will have no effect on the game. You must set Vsync to On in the Graphics Options menu before the option to enable FSAA in the game will be accessible. After enabling VSync, you will then be able to choose from a list of supported FSAA modes.

Low-end Graphics Card Issues When using a low-end graphics card, you may experience the following issues when playing Star Wars Republic Commando:

* You may see flickering graphics. * Textures may be missing or they may display incorrectly. * Full Scene Anti-Aliasing (FSAA) may not appear to work correctly. * Performance may be slow in some areas. * You may see poor frame rate in the game if the in-game resolution is set to 1152 x 864 or higher.

Please check Adjusting Configuration Options for Optimal Performance in the Performance Section of this Troubleshooting Guide for recommended settings if you experience any of the issues listed above.

Poor Performance and Missing Textures You may experience poor performance and/or missing textures when playing Star Wars Republic Commando. If this occurs, please check the following: * Make sure that your video card is supported. Please check Currently Supported Cards and Chipsets in the Video Section of this troubleshooting guide to see if your chipset is listed. * Make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card. Please check the Video Section of this troubleshooting guide for the list of drivers that were tested with this game. * Make sure that the Video Resolution in the Graphics Options menu is set to a lower resolution. * Make sure that Squad Shadows in the Graphics Options menu is set to Off.

Task Switching and Windowed Mode Task Switching and Windowed mode are not supported in Star Wars Republic Commando.

1280 x 960 and Higher Display Mode Settings Some cards may have issues when running the game after selecting 1280 x 960 or higher for the In- Game Resolution, especially when using a 64 MB graphics card. You may experience severe hitching, a generally poor framerate, or occasional lock ups or crashes. If any of these issues occur when playing Star Wars Republic Commando, please select a lower resolution.

Crashing After Selecting 1280 x 960 or Higher Display Mode The game may crash to the desktop or display an error message when you attempt to start a game after changing resolutions in the Graphics Options menu. This occurs if your monitor or its driver does not support the resolution you selected. If this occurs, you may need to run the batch file RestoreDefaultSystemSettings.bat in the ...\Star Wars Republic Commando\Gamedata\System folder before restarting the game. This will reset your in-game options to their default settings. You may need to select the correct driver for your monitor or install the Windows Plug and Play driver to select higher resolutions.

Black Screen after Changing In-Game Resolutions When selecting a resolution in the Graphics Options menu, the screen may go black and display an ‘out of frequency message’ or the game may display incorrectly. This occurs when you select a resolution that your monitor cannot display correctly. If this occurs, wait 15 seconds without pressing any buttons on your keyboard or mouse and the resolution should revert back to its previous setting. If the display does not recover, you may need to exit the game and run the batch file RestoreDefaultSystemSettings.bat in the ...\Star Wars Republic Commando\Gamedata\System folder to reset your in-game options to their default settings.

Integrated Video Chipsets When your computer has an onboard video chip on the motherboard and the system only meets the minimum requirement for RAM, you may experience various problems that occur because the video chipset may use system memory for its video memory. You may experience the following issues:

* Star Wars Republic Commando may not run. * Transitions may be slow. * The frame rate may be slow and choppy. Setting Up Your Monitor If you experience any video problems, you should make sure that your monitor is set up correctly in the display control panel. To do this:

* Right-click on the desktop where there are no icons. * Choose Properties from the shortcut menu. * Click on the Settings tab. * Click on Advanced… * Windows 98/ME: Select the Monitor tab and click on Change… * Windows 98: Click on Next> * Windows ME: Choose Specify the location of the Driver… * Click on Next> * Choose Display a list of all drivers…and click on Next> * Windows 2000/XP: Select the Monitor tab and click on Properties. * Click on the Driver tab. * Click on Update Driver… * Windows 2000: Choose Display a list of all drivers… * Click on Next> * Windows XP: Choose Install from list or specific location… * Choose Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install… * Click on Next> * Choose your monitor from the list. If you are unable to find your monitor listed, please consult the manufacturer of your monitor to see if they have Windows drivers available. This driver allows Windows to set up the monitor correctly. * If the correct monitor is not an option in Show Compatible Devices, click on Show All Devices, scroll through the list of manufacturers, click on the correct one, then click on the name of your monitor. If you are unable to find the correct monitor listed, go to standard monitor types at the top of this list and select Plug and Play Monitor. This driver should work with most Windows compatible plug and play monitors, and may correct issues with some older video cards.

Non-DDC Monitors We have found that when using a non-DDC monitor, refresh rates and resolutions may not be reported correctly to Windows. A Non-DDC (Display Data Channel) monitor cannot communicate with the video card to access information regarding the supported resolutions and refresh rates. When using a non-DDC monitor, you may experience the following issues at certain resolutions:

* Black screens * Stretched or skewed screen sizes * The game may draw past the bottom and right margins of the screen when the in-game resolution is set to 800x600 or 1152x864. * The top portion of the screen may not be visible. * Sniper zoom UI may not display correctly. * The static effect may not be displayed when near a SCAV or jamming device. * The screen display may be corrupt when your resolution is set to 640x480. If this occurs, you may see duplicated images on screen.

To correct these issues, you will need to choose a different in-game resolution from the in-game Graphics Options menu of Star Wars Republic Commando.

Multi-Monitor Configurations Multi-monitor configurations are not supported in Star Wars Republic Commando.

Testing Your Video Card in DirectX Diagnostics After installing DirectX 9.0c, you can run the DirectX Diagnostics program to test your video card. To do this:

* Select Help from the Star Wars Republic Commando launcher. * Select Analyze your Computer. * Click on DirectX Diagnostics. This takes you to the DirectX Diagnostics screen. * Click the tab that says Display, and then click on Test next to Direct3D. If your card fails these tests, you may have problems running Star Wars Republic Commando or any other program that requires Direct3D.

Currently Supported Cards and Chipsets Below is a list of the video cards and chipsets that are supported in Star Wars Republic Commando. If you do not see your card listed, but you do see a chipset that matches the one used on your card, you should be able to play Star Wars Republic Commando.

NOTE: Some of the following cards will work with Star Wars Republic Commando, but exhibit certain issues listed below under Specific Video Issues. When using any of these cards and chipsets, you should be using the latest drivers for your card unless noted below. Specific Video Issues

ATI Radeon Chipsets with Non-DDC Monitors When playing Star Wars Republic Commando on a graphics card with a Radeon chipset with Non-DDC compliant monitors, you may experience the following issues:

* The bottom and right of the game display may not be visible when the in-game resolution is set to 800x600. * The screen display may be corrupt when your resolution is set to 640x480. If this occurs, you may see duplicated images on screen. * If you select 1600x1200 as the in-game resolution in the Graphics Option menu, you will be unable to select yes to accept this resolution because this option is displayed off the screen. * The static effect may not be displayed when near a SCAV or jamming device.

ATI Radeon 8500 When playing Star Wars Republic Commando on a card with the ATI Radeon 8500 chipset, you may experience the following issues:

* Windows XP: Levels may fail to load, causing the game to lock up at the loading screen when using the Catalyst 3.10 driver (6.14.0010.6404). This does not occur when using the Catalyst 4.9 driver (6.14.0010.6458). * Windows 98: When using the Catalyst 4.11 or earlier drivers, parts of the zoomed HUD overlay on the sniper and bow caster may be missing pieces. We recommend that you check for updated drivers, which may correct this issue. * Windows 98: You may see visible lines in the Fetal Jar, Incapacitated and SCAV effects when using the Catalyst 4.11 or earlier drivers. We recommend that you check for updated drivers, which may correct this issue.

ATI Radeon 8500, 9000 or 9200 When playing Star Wars Republic Commando on a card with one of these chipsets, you may experience the following issues:

* Some character and terrain textures may appear black or white when Bumpmapping Quality is set to High in the Graphics Options menu. To correct this, set Bumpmapping Quality to Low or Medium, or select the Set Recommended button. * You may see a blue tinted magnified blurred image displayed when zooming in with the DC-17 Sniper rifle when using the Catalyst 4.5 or earlier drivers. When this occurs, the helmet HUD is not blurred. This does not occur when using the Catalyst 4.9 (6.14.0010.6476) or later driver. * The game may lock up when attempting to load a level when using Catalyst 4.7 drivers in Windows 98 or ME. This does not occur when using the Catalyst 4.10 (4.14.0001.9150) or later driver.

ATI Radeon All-in-Wonder 9600 Pro When playing Star Wars Republic Commando on this card in Windows 2000 or XP with the manufacturer CD drivers (6.14.0010.6378), the display may lose all environmental lighting in Regular and Tactical visors. When this occurs, only the Night-vision visor works correctly. This does not occur when using the Catalyst 4.9 driver (6.14.0010.6476).

ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon 9800 Pro When playing Star Wars Republic Commando on this card in Windows 2000 or XP with the manufacturer CD drivers (6.14.0010.6343), levels may fail to load, causing the game to lock up at the loading screen. This does not occur when using the Catalyst 4.9 (6.14.0010.6458) or later driver.

Intel i915 When playing Star Wars Republic Commando on an Intel i915 system in Windows 2000 or Windows XP with driver version win2k_xp145.exe (6.14.0010.3865), you may experience the following issues: * The ribbon emitters from weapons in the game may display stretched and corrupt polygons. We recommend that you check for updated drivers, which may correct this issue. * You may see black flickering textures when using the Low Light Visor Mode. We recommend that you check for updated drivers, which may correct this issue. * Textures may occasionally drop out when adjusting Bloom and Texture Quality in the Graphics options menu. This does not occur when using the retail driver gfx_xp2k_6.14.10.3847_pv (6.14.0010.3847). * You may see pixels move like static on metal walls when Bump Mapping Quality is set to Medium or High. Setting the Bump Mapping Quality to Low corrects this issue. We recommend that you check for updated drivers, which may correct this issue.

Matrox Millennium P650, P750 or Parhelia-512 When playing Star Wars Republic Commando on these cards, you may experience the following issues:

* You may experience poor frame rates in the game if the in-game resolution is set to 1024x768 or higher in the Graphics Options screen. To correct this, we recommend that you select a lower resolution or select the Set Recommended option. * The game may crash to the desktop when attempting to load a level with FSAA enabled at 1024x768 or higher. Disabling FSAA or selecting a lower resolution corrects this issue. This issue does not occur when using the manufacturer driver 2kxp_108_00_133 (6.13.0001.1778). * All art assets except the HUD may not be displayed when the in-game resolution is set to 1280x960 or higher. -6- Sound Issues

If you are unable to resolve sound problems through this troubleshooting guide, please contact your hardware manufacturer for updated drivers.

DirectX Compatibility Your sound card needs to be DirectX 9.0c compatible to run Star Wars Republic Commando. Consult the DirectX Setup section in this Troubleshooting Guide for information about how to check for DirectX support. If the driver for your hardware is not DirectX compatible, check with your hardware manufacturer for updated drivers.

NOTE: If the Media Player is not installed, some of the following instructions will not work. If you want to add it, please consult Windows Help for assistance. Just type Media Player in the index section of Windows Help and follow the directions provided by Windows.

Static Or Distortion in Star Wars Republic Commando You may hear occasional static in sound effects or sound distortion in the game if the volume is set too high. If this occurs, we recommend that you lower the volume control in the game. If that does not correct the issue, you will need to lower the volume control in Windows. Some cards work best with the Windows Wave volume set to 50%.

Adjusting Volume Levels Within Star Wars Republic Commando To access these options:

* Press ESC to access the in-game menu. * NOTE: If you are at the Main Menu, proceed to the following step. * Select Options. * Select Audio Options. * Adjust the Master Volume, Music Volume, SFX Volume, or Speech Volume sliders.

Adjusting the Volume Through Windows With some sound cards, you may want to adjust the volume in the Windows control panel before starting Star Wars Republic Commando, or you may need to exit the game to adjust the volume. Double click on the Volume Control icon on your task bar and adjust the volume control, CD audio and wave volume. If the Volume Control icon is not on your taskbar, follow these directions to adjust your volume:

* Click on the Start button on your taskbar. * Choose Programs. * Choose Accessories. * Choose Entertainment. * Choose Volume Control. * Adjust the Wave Volume slider. * If you are not hearing any sound, make sure to de-select the MUTE box below the Wave Volume slider.

Default Volume Levels Vary in Different Operating Systems The default volume levels vary greatly on some sound cards in the different operating systems. Because of this, you may need to adjust your volume control in Windows before entering the game. Please follow the instructions above for information on adjusting the volume through Windows.

Volume Control Programs Some sound card and/or PC manufacturers may have proprietary software that must be adjusted separately from the Windows Volume control. Consult your hardware documentation for more information. Keyboard Volume Control Some of the newer keyboards allow you to adjust your Volume control directly on your keyboard. Consult your hardware documentation for more information.

Powered or Amplified Speakers If you have powered speakers and have both line-out and speaker-out jacks on your sound card, try plugging your speakers into the line-out jack. Most speaker-out jacks have an amplified signal and may cause static or popping on your amplified speakers. Switching to your line-out jack may greatly improve the sound quality.

General Sound Card Troubleshooting If your sound card is not set up correctly in Windows, not 100% DirectX or Windows 98, 2000, ME, or XP compatible, or you have a resource conflict, these sound problems may occur:

* You may hear static. * You may hear repeating sounds. * There may be no sound. * The sound may drop out. * You may experience a clicking or crackling sound.

Testing Your Sound Card in Windows You can use the Windows Media Player to play a sound to make sure your sound card is set up correctly in Windows. To do this:

* Click on the Start button on your taskbar. * Select Programs. * Select Accessories. * Select Entertainment. * Select Windows Media Player. * Go to the File menu. * Choose Open... and choose a sound to test. Please be sure to choose Files of type: Sound (*.wav).

Testing Your Sound Card in DirectX Diagnostics After installing DirectX 9.0c, you can run the DirectX Diagnostics program to test your sound card. To do this:

* Select Help from the Star Wars Republic Commando launcher. * Select Analyze Your Computer. * Click on DirectX Diagnostics. This takes you to the DirectX Diagnostics screen. * Click the tab that says Sound, and then click on Test. If your card fails these tests, you may have problems running Star Wars Republic Commando or any other program that requires DirectX. Specific Sound Issues

-7- Connectivity Devices and Issues

This section lists some of the common connectivity issues that may occur and some information to help you avoid these issues. For more information, please refer to the Star Wars Republic Commando Manual or the LucasArts Home Page on the World Wide Web at http://support.lucasarts.com

Connection Related Issues

You Need an Account With an ISP to Play on the Internet You must have a connection to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to connect with other players through GameSpy. This includes Dial-Up Networking connections, Cable Modem service, xDSL service and Direct Corporate Connections. If you need help configuring your computer to use the Internet, contact your ISP’s technical support.

Connect to the Internet Before Launching Star Wars Republic Commando Dial-up modem users must establish a connection to the Internet before starting Star Wars Republic Commando. DSL users also need to establish a connection to the Internet before starting the game, although Cable modems users are automatically connected when Windows starts.

Unable to Join Game When Not Connected to Internet When attempting to join an Internet game before connecting to the Internet, the Querying Servers message will display, but no servers will be found during the query. If this occurs, you will need to cancel the query, exit the game and establish your connection to the Internet before attempting to join a game.

Connection Issues The following items are known to be sources of connection issues and the information may be helpful if you are having problems connecting or staying connected to Star Wars Republic Commando. We understand that some of these devices or technologies may have been in place for periods of time and have only recently begun having problems. We suggest that you try these troubleshooting tips.

Firewall, Proxy, or Anti-Virus Software While an important part of home computer security or a way to provide connection sharing, these technologies can interfere with game connectivity. When running a software firewall, such as the type found in Windows XP Service Pack 2, McAfee, or Norton, the game may not give focus to the prompt to allow the firewall to recognize the game. If you are having connection problems and are using one of these types of software you may need to temporarily disable it, and then try connecting to the game. If the issues cease while this software is disabled, please refer to the section Configure Your Firewall or Router for Internet Play below. Please refer to the GameSpy Firewall support webpage located at http://www.gamespyarcade.com/support/firewalls.shtml for further information on how to use GameSpy with firewalls.

Configuring Firewall Software to Play Star Wars Republic Commando When running a software firewall, such as the type found in Windows XP Service Pack 2, McAfee, or Norton, the game may not give focus to the prompt to allow the firewall to recognize the game. If you have not configured the software to recognize the game prior to accessing the Multiplayer Lobby, the prompt may be behind the game, making it difficult to acknowledge the prompt if you are unable to task out of the game. We recommend that you configure your firewall software before starting the game.

PPPoE Connections Some PPPoE connections require a login and password, as well as a phone number to dial into the connection. Please make sure you make note of this information so that when the time comes to input it, you will have it available to use without having to contact your ISP.

Configuring Online Options Please check the readme for detailed information on Configuring Online Options. Multiplayer Connection Options When you choose to play a multiplayer game, you have three options available for connecting to or hosting a game. These options are:

* LAN: These games are found via broadcast packets. The game data is sent at high resolution. Because of this, the game packet size is doubled. * Internet: These games are found via queries to GameSpy servers. If the host you join is on your LAN, game data will still be passed at LAN speeds. * Connect to Direct IP: These games are found by user specification of host address. If the host you join is on your LAN, game data will still be passed at LAN speeds.

Getting Disconnected After Starting Star Wars Republic Commando You may be disconnected from your ISP connection while playing Star Wars Republic Commando if your Internet Options in the Windows Control Panel are set to automatically disconnect after a certain period of inactivity. We recommend that you disable this option before playing Star Wars Republic Commando to prevent being disconnected while in the game.

Internet Performance Issues The time of day can have an impact on your connection quality. If you have trouble playing Star Wars Republic Commando over your Dial-Up Internet connection during peak hours, you might try playing later at night or at other times of the day to get a better quality connection. Setting the game to display at a lower screen resolution or setting Texture Quality to Low in the Graphics Options menu may increase performance while playing Star Wars Republic Commando.

* Dropped Packets: Each piece of data that is sent over a network or the Internet is called a packet. It is important for all of these packets to be delivered intact and in a timely manner for a smooth multiplayer experience. The Internet can frequently drop packets (lose them) depending on the quality of your connection and the amount of traffic on the Internet itself. If packets can't get through between a player and the Star Wars Republic Commando servers due to a poor connection, some issues may occur.

* Latency: Latency is a measure of the time (in milliseconds) that it takes for data to travel round-trip from one computer to another over a Network or the Internet. On the Internet, high latency can cause game performance to degrade severely. When playing any game over the Internet, it is important to have a low latency connection. High latency will contribute to poor multiplayer performance and decreased stability.

* Connection Problems: If you are consistently having trouble with dropped packets or latency, the following are a few things you can try to help with your connection to the Internet: * Disconnect and reconnect to your ISP. * Try another ISP. Some Internet providers have slow or congested networks and are not suitable for gaming. If you consistently have trouble joining games or lose connection after joining a game you may have an unreliable ISP.

IRQ Conflicts for Windows 98 and Windows ME We recommend that you check to assure that your network adapter is not sharing an IRQ with your Video or Sound card. To check for this:

* Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop * Select Properties from the menu. * Select the Device Manager tab * Double click the Computer entry at the top of the device list. This should bring up the IRQ Resource window. If your network card is sharing an IRQ with your Video or Sound card then you may need to move one of those devices to a different IRQ to resolve the conflict.

Modem or Network Adapter Conflict If you have a modem installed in your computer along with the network card for either your Cable or DSL modem then it may cause conflicts. We recommend that you remove the modem from your computer completely, or at least disable it, so there is no conflict between the modem and your network card.

Winmodems or Emulation-Based Modems Winmodems or emulation-based modems are software-based and can cause numerous connectivity problems, not just in our game but also in general. The reason is because the CPU is being used to "pump" the data in a software modem, as well as its other calculations. When playing a game, the CPU may not be able to make the necessary game calculations AND transmit data. We strongly recommend against using them.

3Com US Robotics Sportster 56K Voice USB If you experience occasional lockups during Internet or modem play using this modem in USB mode in Windows 98, you can solve this by using a Serial cable to connect your modem instead of a USB cable. This may be resolved in a future modem driver or Windows 98 update.

Configure Your Firewall or Router for Internet Play Firewall software is designed to prevent hostile action from outside your computer or network from affecting files on your hard drive. Internet gaming activity can seem like such action to this type of software. You may encounter problems trying to connect to a multiplayer game if your computer is behind a firewall. Please refer to your firewall documentation for suggestions on how to allow specific programs to operate through it if you do not intend to temporarily take it down, or ask your network/system administrator for assistance. In addition, many routers designed to share one Internet connection among more than one computer have firewalls built into them. Please refer to the GameSpy Firewall support webpage located at http://www.gamespyarcade.com/support/firewalls.shtml for further information on how to use GameSpy with firewalls.

NOTE: To complete the following suggestions, you must have appropriate rights to change settings on the system, or you may need to ask your network/system administrator for assistance.

Opening Ports to Play Behind a Firewall When playing on a system that is behind a firewall or proxy, you may need to open certain TCP & UDP ports to connect to multiplayer games.

The following ports may need to be opened for GameSpy servers to see the game: * 3658 * 3659 * 6500 * 27900

GameSpy Arcade may also need the following TCP ports open in order to function properly: * 6667 (IRC) * 3783 (Voice Chat Port) * 27900 (Master Server UDP Heartbeat) * 28900 (Master Server List Request) * 29900 (GP Connection Manager) * 29901 (GP Search Manager) * 13139 (Custom UDP Pings) * 6515 (Dplay UDP) * 6500 (Query Port) * 11138 (Republic Commando Query Port) * 7777 (Game Port)

Please consult your network administrator or your router manufacturer for information on how to set up these ports. If you experience any connectivity issues, you may need to install the latest firmware that is available for your router from the manufacturer.

Hosting Multiple Dedicated Servers When hosting more than one dedicated server on a system behind a firewall or proxy, you will need to open additional ports along the same range. In addition to opening port 7777, you must open port numbers 7778, 7779, 7780, etc, depending upon the number of servers that you are hosting. If these corresponding ports are not opened, clients cycling maps and/or clients joining these servers may see issues due to mismatching between the different servers being hosted.

Hosting Dedicated Servers Behind Firewalls or NATs When hosting a dedicated server behind a Firewall or NAT, you may need to put your computer on the DMZ of your router or use port forwarding. The DMZ option is easier to set up than port forwarding, but it exposes your entire computer to the Internet. Your firewall cannot provide security on the DMZ; so placing a computer on the DMZ should only be done on a temporary basis. Port forwarding may be difficult to configure, but it provides a safe way of running a server from behind a firewall because only a single port (or small series of ports) is exposed to the Internet. Please refer to the list of port numbers noted above for the appropriate ports to open.

Routers In general, they should be able to connect to the game without modifications needed to the router. However, if you are experiencing connection problems and are using a router, we suggest bypassing the router and connecting directly to your connectivity device. If your problems cease while bypassing the router you can try these things: * Try resetting your router to its default settings. * Check your router manufacturer’s website for any available Firmware updates. If available, download and install those.

Star Wars Republic Commando was tested with various routers to ensure your gaming experience is not hindered by possible disconnects. -8- DVD-ROM Drive Issues

You must have a DVD-ROM drive installed and configured properly in your system in order to install the DVD version of Star Wars Republic Commando. The Star Wars Republic Commando DVD will not function in a CD-ROM drive.

Star Wars Republic Commando does not access the DVD during play. However, if you are experiencing problems when installing or launching the game, your DVD-ROM may not meet the minimum requirements to run Star Wars Republic Commando or there may be a problem with your drive.

DVD-ROM Access Error A blue screen DVD-ROM access error might be a symptom of one of these problems:

* You may have a dirty or scratched DVD. * Your DVD-ROM drive may be having trouble reading the disc. This is common on some 8X (eight speed) DVD-ROM drives. * Your DVD-ROM drive may be getting old or worn. * Your DVD-ROM may not be properly installed in Windows.

First, check your DVD for any dirt, fingerprints, smudges or scratches. To clean your DVD, wipe it gently with a soft cloth, moving in smooth strokes from the center hub to the outer edge of the DVD. If your DVD looks fine, replace it in the drive and see if you continue to have this problem. If the problem persists, try testing the drive with a different DVD.

Trouble Accessing Files If you are having trouble accessing or using files on the DVD-ROM or Hard Drive in Windows 98 or Windows ME, your drives may be running in MS-DOS Compatibility Mode. To check this:

* Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop. * Choose Properties. * Click on Performance. * Look at File System:

It should say 32-bit. If this field states that any of your drives are using MS-DOS Compatibility Mode, your drives are not configured properly to run under Windows 98 or Windows ME. This will greatly decrease the performance of your computer, and may not allow you to access programs that are written for 32-bit file access only.

This may be caused by: * IDE or SCSI interfaces that are not properly set up under Windows. * Inappropriate drivers for IDE or SCSI hardware. * Proprietary CD-ROM drives. * Computers that do not support LBA (Logical Block Addressing) modes except through software, such as Dynamic Drive Overlay, which allows the computer to see the whole capacity of large hard drives. * Software Viruses.

If you are experiencing this problem, please contact your computer manufacturer or a computer technician for assistance in correcting this problem before attempting to install the game.

-9- Controller Device Issues

USB Devices When using USB devices on your system, you may occasionally hear static and distortion in audio, or you may experience slow downs and hitching in the game. This occurs because the USB device requires a percentage of the CPU’s processing time and Star Wars Republic Commando is also using a portion of the CPU time for the game.

Mouse Issues

Mouse Buttons Star Wars Republic Commando natively supports 4 mouse buttons in the game. Mouse wheels are supported.

Logitech Cordless Mouseman Optical When using this device with the default Windows 98 driver and the device connected via the USB port, you may experience erratic mouse behavior in Windows and in the game. If this occurs, installing Logitech Mouseware driver version 9.76 should correct this issue.

Logitech Mouseware Driver Version 9.76 If you experience any issues when using a Logitech mouse, we recommend that you install Logitech Mouseware driver version 9.76, which may correct these issues.

Logitech Wheel Mouse When using a Logitech Wheel Mouse, the mouse wheel may not work in the game. If this occurs, the scrolling size may need to be set to none in the Mouse Properties under the Buttons tab. This option is located in the Logitech Control Panel. The web wheel should also be disabled by setting Button 2 to middle button. NOTE: This may deactivate the mouse wheel in other applications, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Custom Mouse Cursors When using custom Windows cursors, such as the 3D cursor, the game cursor may be discolored or corrupt in some areas on the game, especially in menus. Disabling this feature corrects this issue.

Kensington Expert Mouse When using the Kensington Expert Mouse with the PS/2 adaptor, the mouse may lose sensitivity in the game. Adjusting the sensitivity in the Mouse Control Panel or Kensington Mouseware does not correct this issue with this configuration. This does not occur when using the USB adaptor with this device.

Kensington Mouseware 6.0 When using Kensington Mouseware 6.0, you may experience a momentary loss of control if the Rest Reminder is enabled in Mouseware. When this feature is enabled, the pop-up application may take focus from the game. If this occurs, you will need to press ALT-Tab to bring the focus back to the game.

When using the default settings in Mouseware, you may be tasked out of the game when you press a mouse button. This occurs because some of the buttons are mapped to default Windows functions. If this occurs, you will need to change the button mapping in the Mouseware control panel to correct this issue.

Keyboard Issues

Compact Keyboards Users of compact keyboards, such as those found on laptop systems or some ergonomic keyboards, may experience some problems using the default set of keyboard commands.

Keyboard Limitations Some keyboards may have limitations in Star Wars Republic Commando. You may be unable to use multiple keys simultaneously. For example: If you are pressing two keys at the same time, only one key may register the action that you chose.

Onboard Keyboard Shortcut Keys We recommend that you do not use any of the onboard shortcut keys on your keyboard (such as the Start Menu key) when playing the game. Doing so may have adverse affects on the game, such as causing the game to close while you are playing a mission.

Joystick and Gamepad Issues Joysticks and gamepads are not supported in Star Wars Republic Commando. -10- DirectX Setup

Technical Overview of DirectX DirectX is a library provided by Microsoft to run inside the operating system and provide programmers with seamless access to all of the hardware features available today. The DirectX platform provides an environment that allows developers to use a standardized format when programming an application. This makes it easier to support a wide variety of different hardware configurations. Prior to DirectX, developers were forced to write hardware-specific code (with a specific driver for each type and brand of hardware).

NOTE: Some older systems may contain hardware that may not be fully DirectX compatible. For optimum performance in Star Wars Republic Commando, your system must fully support DirectX. Fortunately, many manufacturers are releasing updated drivers. If you are unsure whether your system will support DirectX, please contact the manufacturer of your system for more information.

WARNING: Once you have installed DirectX, it is not easily removed from your system.

NOTE: You must have Administrator rights to properly install DirectX on a Windows 2000 or XP system.

Where to Find DirectX 9.0c Typically, DirectX 9.0c will be installed as part of the Star Wars Republic Commando installation process if it is not already installed on your system. However, if you previously chose not to install DirectX 9.0c, you can do so by following these steps:

* Insert Star Wars Republic Commando Disc 1 in the DVD-ROM drive. * Select Help from the Star Wars Republic Commando launcher. * Select Analyze your Computer. * Select Install DirectX 9.0c and follow the on-screen prompts.

NOTE: Some programs that were made with earlier versions of DirectX may not work with DirectX 9.0c.

Checking Your System for DirectX Support After you have installed Star Wars Republic Commando and DirectX, you may want to determine whether DirectX supports your computer hardware. To do this:

* Select Help from the Star Wars Republic Commando launcher. * Select Analyze your Computer. * Click on DirectX Diagnostics. This takes you to the DirectX Diagnostics screen. * Click on the Display 1, Display 2, Sound 1, and Sound 2 tabs. * If you are experiencing any problems while running Star Wars Republic Commando, we recommend that you test DirectDraw, Direct3D and DirectSound on their respective screens. If any of these tests fail, please check for updated drivers for the hardware that failed the test. If you continue to have problems after updating the drivers, we recommend that you contact the hardware manufacturer of that device for further assistance. NOTE: The Display 2 tab will only be available if you have two video cards in your system for a multi- monitor support. The Sound 2 tab will only be available if you have two audio devices on your system. This tab will be available if you are using USB Headsets.
