James Hoak Men’s Golf Scholarship Fund The James M. Hoak Scholarship is designated for deserving student-athletes on the UI men’s golf team. Hoak is a 1940 graduate from the University of Iowa, former Des Moines businessman and currently resides in North Palm Beach, FL. Long-time friend, Clark A. Johnson and Hoak’s three sons, David A. Hoak (a 1968 UI business graduate), Jon S. Hoak and James M. Hoak Jr. made gift commitments to the UI Foundation to establish an endowed athletics scholarship fund in Hoak’s name. While at Iowa, James M. Hoak lettered in golf and roomed with UI football legend Nile Kinnick. Hoak attended the M.B.A. program at Harvard University in the early 1940’s and after service in the Navy during World War II, joined the family business, the Wheeler Lumber Company, headquartered in Des Moines. He served as Hoak Scholarship Recipients the fi rm’s president for more than 20 years before retiring in 1985. Hoak and his wife, Jane, 2008 Dan Holterhaus a 1941 UI graduate, have been UI supporters and volunteers for many years, and are 2009 Dusty Koth members of the Presidents Club, which recognizes the UI’s most generous contributors. 2010 Vince India “Jim graduated from the university nearly 68 years ago, and I left campus in 1953, but 2011 Ian Vandersee neither of us has ever lost his enthusiasm for the university, and for its mission of equipping students with the tools to succeed in life after college,” said Johnson. “Jim’s been so important to the university over the years, and I wanted to do something to honor his love for the U of I while he and his family could enjoy and participate in that recognition.” “The James Hoak Scholarship represents a real win-win for the UI athletics program,” UI Athletics Director Gary Barta said. “The student-athletes who earn the Hoak Scholarship will have the distinction of knowing that their awards carry the name of one of our most loyal and generous graduates -- someone who knew Nile personally, and who represents the proud history and integrity of the UI athletics program.” www.hawkeyesports.com 19 POSTSEASON HISTORY IOWA MEN’S GOLF

Strength & Conditioning Philosophy The philosophy of this program consists of two components. The fi rst is to continually develop a scientifi cally sound program that will maximize strength, power and explosiveness in order to allow the athlete to get the utmost out of their genetic potential, and to reduce the chance of injury. This will primarily be accomplished through the use of ground based free weight exercises and the progressive incorporation of functional movements and plyometrics. The second is to establish a culture which will develop the discipline, character and mental toughness within each student-athlete and team as a whole so that they are able to make sacrifi ces in their training, leave their comfort zone and develop a Championship ATTITUDE. This will encourage them to make the most out of every situation and opportunity The Recreation Building Athletic Training Room has excellent facili- given to them in athletics and academics, so that they might know what it ties to conduct evaluations, treatments, and rehabilitation for the is to be fully committed to something. The name Hawkeye was originally the name of the hero in the fi ctional novel, The Last of the Mohicans, written by James Fenimore Cooper. Cooper had the Delaware Indians bestow the name on a white scout who lived with them. In 1838, 12 years after the book was published, people in the territory of Iowa acquired the nickname, chiefl y through the efforts of Judge David Rorer of Burlington and James Edwards of Fort Madison. Edwards, editor of the Fort Madison Patriot, moved his paper to Burlington in 1843 and renamed it the Burlington Hawkeye. The two men continued their campaign to popularize the name, and territorial offi cials eventually gave it their formal approval. Herky The Hawkeye The Hawkeye nickname gained a tangible symbol in 1948 when a cartoon character, later to be named Herky the Hawkeye was hatched. The creator was Richard Spencer III, instructor of journalism at Iowa. The impish Hawk was an immediate hit and acquired a name through a statewide contest staged by the athletic department. John Franklin, a Belle Plaine alumnus, was the man who suggested Herky. Since his birth more than 45 years ago, Herky has symbolized Iowa athletics and epitomized university life. He even donned a military uniform during the Korean War and became the insignia of the 124th Fighter Squadron. During the mid-1950s, Herky came to life at a football game as the Iowa mascot. Since that time, Herky has been a familiar fi gure at Iowa athletics events. School Colors For 40 years Iowa was without school colors, but in 1887 a group of 50 seniors met on the steps of the Old Capitol to decide what are now the school offi cial colors. They chose gold, the color of Iowa’s vast corn fi elds and black, the color of the rich soil.

School Fight Song The Iowa Fight Song was written in 1950 by Mason City, Iowa, native Meredith Willson. Best known as the creator of Broadway’s “The Music Man,” Willson was awarded a 1963 University of Iowa Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award for “setting the spirit of Iowa to music.” The lively cheer is sung hundreds of times during Iowa athletics events the year around. The word is Fight, Fight, Fight for IOWA Let every loyal Iowan sing; The word is Fight, Fight, Fight for IOWA Until the walls and rafters ring (Go Hawks!) Come on and cheer, cheer, cheer for IOWA Come on and cheer until you hear the fi nal gun. The word is Fight, Fight, Fight for IOWA Until the game is won. 64 www.hawkeyesports.com
