Philadelphia Cup Team Race, Les Ammarreurs, Guernsey by Elliott Caleta Women head the field in Philadelphia Team Walk

The women walkers achieved head of the field individual success in the Philadelphia Team Cup handicap one mile road walk at Les Amarreurs. One of the first walkers to start, Kay Coulson held first position to cross the line in 11.36, three seconds ahead of Harriet Payne, who in turn was another three seconds up on third to finish Rose Druckes.

The women’s success continued with Joanne Le Prevost taking fourth place and leading her team to victory, backed up by Peter Beckerleg who walked to a new best time, removing well over a minute off his previous time and Rob Elliott.

Philadelphia Cup Team Race cont’d

The team result, in which watch times are added together, was a very close thing with only 21 seconds separating all four teams. The winning team totalled a time of 35.44, ten second ahead of the second team and 16 seconds ahead of third.

Walk of the day was Peter Beckerleg’s new best time, whilst Terry Bates and Rose Druckes both improved on their Guernsey Age Best times for the one mile road walk. Backmarker Jason Le Noury had the fastest time of the day with 7.35, ahead of Rob Elliott 8.29 and Terry Bates 8.51.

Office Solutions sponsored Eric Waldron Trophy courtesy of Rob Elliott 2 miles track walk, Osmond Priaulx, Guernsey

Stuart Le Noury retained the Office Solutions Eric Waldron Trophy in the first evening race of the year. The bitterly cold evening and windy conditions did not help as he led from start to finish to cross the line in 16.39. Second man home and thirty seconds behind was Phil Lockwood with past winner Rob Elliott back in third. Rose Druckes was the quickest of the women ahead of Harriet Payne.

10 km Isle of Man road walking championships and Y.A.G. champ courtesy of N&K Partingdon The re-arranged championships, delayed by the recent snow, took place last Thursday evening and resulted in an excellent night of racing.

All age groups (6 of them) started together with the under 11/13 1km category first to finish. Eight started and all should be encouraged after their performance and hopefully will continue to train and race. Harry Read was the first boy across the line with Leah Goddard just pipping Emily Hunter for top honours in the girl’s race.

Stephen Waddington was the lone entrant in the 2km, the distance he will race in the National championships in Coventry at the end of this month.

Similarly, for Jason Turner and Tom Partington, 3km was also a try-out for the National championships and they were closely matched with Jason edging away in the final kilometre.

The 5km is the distance under 17 Rebecca Greatbatch will race and she dominated the race ahead of the seniors and was only just outside her personal best time, recent newcomer Emma Read was second and super vet Enid Watson took third. 22 lined up for the 10km championship and on the calm cold night conditions seemed good for racing. A cautious start saw juniors Adam Cowin and Alex Eaton along with leading lady Michelle Turner at the head of the field. After halfway the pace increased with Adam breaking away and covering the second half in under 24 minutes. Alex came home second, also with a negative split as did Michelle as she took the ladies title.

Third male to finish was Brian Wade who made remarkable progress with a 53 minute 03 second time, just getting the better of Chris Cale and Vinny Lynch.

Second in the ladies went to Marie Jackson who is back hitting fine performances, such that she is amongst the best in the world in her age group and subject to ratification, set a new Manx age group record at the distance. Steph Quayle was 3rd lady, showing excellent technique along with Michelle and Marie.

Manx Harriers would like to thank all the officials and helpers on the night who helped make it a good event. European Veterans Indoor Championship at San Sebastion- Donostia by Eric Horwill Overall, a satisfactory haul of medals! The Indoor events were well organised and avoided the overcrowded tracks of some previous championships. However the Judges continued to decimate some of the women’s fields and were generally rather inconsistent. Our British team suffered no less than 6 DQs indoors.

The outdoor 5kms were held on a flat, fast course in the suburbs of Errenteria. The location ensured protection from the prevailing winds, and with the sun shining most of the time, provided much the warmest day we had. Many of the competition made use of the water station!

We had 4 DQs despite a slightly more realistic attitude from the judges.

It was good to see Roger Michell doing well in a major event, having suffered a stroke a little over a year ago.

Results later in record.

2nd Race Walking League Millhouses Park 16/04/13 by Brian Adams

In this South Yorkshire League event walkers join the race at different times according to the distance they are walking and the handicap they have been given. With 2km remaining Alana Zeidler was in 3rd position but steadily moving through towards the front, Ana Garcia was moving faster 2 mins back and still in last place. Alana passed Ella Sharkey to hit the front with 500m to go wondering if Ana would snatch victory away from her. She held on to the lead to cross the line 29 seconds ahead of Ana just 3 seconds outside her recent personal best. City of ’s U13 girls’ team filled the first three places.

Results later in record. 2013 ERWL – 16th March Race 2 – English Half Marathon Hillingdon Cycle Circuit by Ron Wallwork To everyone’s relief the rain ceased half an hour before the race got underway and but for an occasional squall toward the end, it held off.

Fabian Deuter made it to wins out of two in this year’s campaign and in the absence of Fransisco Reis (racing in ) had things all his own way. Suzanne Beardsmore and the other four Centurions in the race thrived at this distance and in only his second race Keith Vallis walked exceptionally well. Local’s Ken Bobbett and Russell Vroobel set pbs; Ken by two minutes and Russell by over ten minutes. Sue Barnett was more than pleased with her debut at the distance.

Warwickshire Championship 10 - not Smithy again? By Mike Smith

In 1956 stalwart George Chaplin took ownership of The Brian Evans & Ware Trophy and subsequently won the trophy a total of 8 times, but only once the great Ken Matthews kept it in his trophy cabinet for 8 consecutive years from 1957 to 1964.

In 1974 Moscow Olympian Ian Richards whilst residing in Warwick took his first title, then dominated the championship from 1978 to 1982, chalking up 6 victories in total.

It was then the turn of Coventry Teammates, training partners and great friends Mike Smith and Daz Thorn's to step in to the frame, Smith winning the trophy 7 times before retirement, giving Thorn the chance to clock-up 9 victories by 2000, with just a brief interruption from Smithy in 1998 when he first returned to the sport.

Over the next few years Mike managed to get his name on to the trophy several more times, until once more retiring, hitting a grand total of 10 titles, over a mix of the original distance of 10 miles (his best time in 1988 of 69.20) and subsequently the reduced distance of 10kms.

This left the door wide open for Steve Arnold, who having first got his name on the cup in 2002, won the race for 7 consecutive years from 2006 to 2012 to give him a total of 8 times Warwickshire Champion.

Page 4 of 23 Contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] Race Walking Record April 2013 In association with the Race Walking Association

Warwickshire Championship 10 cont’d So, the year is 2013 and Steve Arnold lined up on a cold, rainy day in Stourport-on-Severn, the rightful owner of the trophy. But on the line was Mike Smith, having 'done a little training' following a broken leg in 2012 which meant running still caused swelling and some impact pain. Steve (also a work colleague) had thrashed Mike the previous week by 3 minutes in a local charity 10km run.

The Warwickshire Championship was combined with the Midland title, so Mark Williams soon established race command, with Steve Allen (guest) settling in to 2nd place, but Mike Smith covering his moves, which allowed Mike to slowly but surely pull away from Arnold (as he focused on looking after Nuneaton youngster Matthew Redfern), until there was an unassailable lead which Smith increased to the line, to take his 11th Warwickshire title, just 30 years after his first at the age of 19, and 6 days before a big birthday (work it out).

Next year threatens to be interesting as rumours start about Daz Thorn coming out of retirement and Ian Richards (that's the Olympian, not the Professor) moving back to Warwickshire - watch this space.

National 20km including YAG and Trial of Pit Lane Rule by Catharine Telling The National 20km Championship was hosted by Coventry Godiva on Sunday 28th April. It was a sunny dry day which made a pleasant change to some of the more recent races.

The event was well supported in most age groups with some excellent walking on display especially from the junior ranks. The senior races enjoyed a good cross sector of walkers including a healthy number of senior women taking part for the first time in the 20kms.

Well done to all those who raced.

As part of the days racing the Younger Age Groups Races incorporated the trial of the new pit lane rule. The rule is being considered as a way of helping encourage younger athletes learning the sport to stay with us as they are less likely to be disqualified if their style is not quite right. In the future, if the rule is fully adopted, it is hoped the “Pit Lane” will enhance the spectators experience and understanding of the sport.

The judging team were led by Stuart Telling ( Chief Judge) and Peter Marlow (Technical Advisor), ably assisted by Olive Dobson (Judges recorder).

The RWA would appreciate any feedback from the athletes, coaches, officials and spectators on the trial and the rule. What did you think?

The full results from the day’s racing are included in the Results section.

Feedback on the Pit Lane Rule Proposals can be sent to the RWA directly or to the Editors of the Record for forwarding on. Please note we will only publish responses and letters in the Record if specifically requested.

Richard Hinton, son of past Ilford A.C. race walker Mike Hinton was awarded the British Empire Medal in the 2012 New Year’s Honours List for his outstanding contribution towards the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

Richard was one of the original 80 plus staff who laid the foundations under Lord Sebastian Coe before the Bid was won in 2005. He spent some considerable time in , learning from their Olympic experience. Specifically he was a Manager over 500 others working very long hours on IT and Communications over 8 years in preparation for what has been described by many ‘as the best ever Games.’

He received the prestigious Award from the Lord Lt. Of London Mr. Barker at the Tower of London on 27th March, 2013 and has been invited to an Olympic Garden Party in late May. A really great achievement!

Brian Scrivens C 337 by Eric Horwill

Brian, who passed away, aged 78 years, on 4th December 2012 was a regular member of Royal Sutton Coldfield’s teams during the 50s and 60s and 70s. He took part in several of Midland Veterans (pre masters!) early walks promotions before retiring through ill health.

His outstanding achievement was becoming a Centurion in the 1962 Leicester to Skegness 100 miles having completed the course in 23 hrs 45 mins 30secs.

Brian maintained his interest in race walking by regularly attending events in Sutton Park and at Birchfield. He was Assistant Secretary of the RSC Club for some years and when his mobility was further limited, still helped by looking after registration at open meetings and championships. He worked in the Engineering Industry and was well known as a keen and meticulous Trade Unionist.

Brian was interested in the Theatre and was for many seasons a regular attender at the Grand in Wolverhampton.

Problems related to diabetes finally caused him to have a leg amputated. He spent his final years in a nursing home in Chasetown, the area where he had spent most of his life.

A small group from Race Walking, representing Midland Masters, the RWA and the Centurions attended the funeral service at Streetly. A memorial service was later held at Chasetown Methodist Church.

Essex quartet at the Virgin London Marathon by Dave Ainsworth A quartet of Essex-based race walkers, all Centurions, completed this year's Virgin London Marathon: Steve Allen, Stuart Bennett, Kim Howard & Alan O'Rawe. Well done to them and to all other walkers who appeared in the big race.

One Essex competitor who didn't go the distance was Eddie Trotter, who is 1of 4 Essex athletes to have completed over 100 marathons. Eddie had a long day as he also runs a Water Station on the Isle of Dogs - he drove helpers there in the early hours, then after parking his car, shot over to Greenwich to face the starter. Injury forced him to pull up at 16 miles. He reached the finish line on the Underground (competitors dropping out get free travel to the finish line on production of their race numbers) to collect his bag of personal belongings. True athletics supporter Eddie then got back to his Water Station in time to hand drinks to stragglers.

Common Wealth Games by Bill Sutherland

Hello Readers of the Race Walking Record, I have been asked by Peter Marlow to write an article giving my views on the Future of the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and beyond.

Having been part of a magnificent campaign to put the Race Walking Events back in the Athletics Programme I now realise we must focus and work on the bigger picture. The campaign is NOT lost, but we are facing decisions that have been made by the Commonwealth Games Federation and Organising Committees over more than 12 years.

Without being critical of the hard working RWA we have to admit that we in the UK do not presently have Top Committee Representatives of the stature of Timber Woodcock from the 60’s etc who fought to have a Race Walk in the programme in 1966. Many commendable ideas have been floated around in the many letters and e-mails already sent. I feel strongly that now is the time to form a long term Action Committee to ensure that the situation we are presently in with NO RACE WALKS in GLASGOW 2014 never happens again.

I feel that the RWA should promote an Open Meeting for discussion airing of views and from that an active committee should be formed. I personally feel the areas that need to be addressed are as follows:-

1) A full investigation over the background to the present decision by the CGF and OC’s. The use of an application via the Freedom of Information Act is very necessary.

2) There is a need to find out details of the CGF representatives and Athletics Representatives for all Commonwealth Games countries. We also need to know when and where the CGF Council Meetings are being held. Many decisions have been made in the past no doubt without many countries knowing much about the Race Walk events. In the future information must be passed on regularly. OUT OF SIGHT IS SO OFTEN OUT OF MIND!

3) We have got to cultivate spokespersons who will speak and argue positively on the Race Walks being on the Athletic Programme .

4) We need to study the results sheets of the most successful LONDON 2012 Olympic Games Walks in the Mall to discover those from Commonwealth Countries. At the next Games after Glasgow in 2018 at Brisbane in , where the Race Walks are assured we definitely need to have a much larger entry to fight against our current rating as Optional. I think we may even have to consider the possibility of gaining Sponsorship to help disadvantaged Race Walkers to travel and take part i.e. this may apply to some of the African Nations.

Common Wealth Games cont’d

5) In the UK we have to look at increasing our overall entry. I personally do not think that holding two Men’s Walks at 20 and 50 Kms is sustainable. I personally would favour one event at 20 Kms or to give the short and long distance walkers a chance a return to 30 Kms plus a 20 Kms Women’s Walk. We have to look at ways of encouraging new participants from Wales, Ireland, Isle of Man, Channel Islands, Scotland as well as England. We have to discover how many race walkers would satisfy the CGF to put us back in its proper place in the programme?

6) The present attitude of the public towards the Race Walks is in many ways much improved as was shown by the enthusiasm in the Mall. Of course today we also have the emphasis on the Health Benefits too. Much improvement is visible recently in races combined with Athletics Meetings i.e. Ron WALLWORK’s great promotion of the Pat Furey Walks at Lee Valley. There is a real need to build on this as so many smaller meeting were held in yesteryear as a part of Sports Days, Fire Brigade Championships etc bring into our Sport new walkers.

From my point of view I feel that the Commonwealth Games Walks must be restored to their rightful place in the Athletic Programme. Let’s not dwell too long on the past but work towards a much brighter future for I feel sure that we have Past and PRESENT Race Walkers who can work to achieve the goals I have outlined.

Yours in Sport and Friendship, Bill Sutherland – CG 1970 – Bronze - Scotland Stan Vickers by Peter Marlow Sad to announce Stan Vickers died 18th April 2013 after a long illness. He won bronze medal in the 1960 Rome Olympics and gold medal in the 1958 European Championship. He dominated short distance walking events during 1957/58 both on the track and road.

Funeral details to be announced. Review of the “Electronic System for Loss of Contact Control in Race Walking” by Bob Bowman The paper entitled “Electronic System for Loss of Contact Control in Race Walking” by Antonio Amigo is not a realistic solution to the judging of race walking. In fact, it is inferior to the Dennis Furlong design, which also was not a realistic solution.

Along with an impractical design, the author tries to sell his idea based on misleading and false premises. It should also be pointed out that any idea such as this needs to be first tested properly before the IAAF gives it serious consideration. The cost of this testing should not be borne by the IAAF.

Points 1. Judging of bent knees would still be needed unless we eliminate this part of the rule, which the author suggests would be a good idea. He incorrectly states that the bent knee rule was included “to make loss of contact more difficult”. 2. The author apparently does not realize that if the contact rule (not just visible to the human eye loss of contact) is strictly enforced, everyone would be disqualified, unless walking very slowly. It would essentially kill the sport. The “new” Furlong design eliminates this problem by measuring the amount of allowable loss of contact. A requirement necessary for any viable design, and which this design lacks. 3. The author only mentions the “old” Furlong design which was also based on pressure sensors. The “new design is based on the electrical capacitance of the air gap or loss of contact. This design was not rejected by the IAAF because of excessive weight. It was rejected because of reliability and impracticality.

Page 20 of 23 Contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] Race Walking Record April 2013 In association with the Race Walking Association

Review cont’d 4. The reliability of this design would still be a significant issue. 5. The author incorrectly states,”The current walker is no longer concerned about losing contact with the ground or not, but rather about to what extent he can “fly” without being caught”. Since the fastest walkers are usually those with the smallest loss of contact (flight phase), the above statement is obviously false. 6. The author notes the sport of fencing which uses an electronic touch system. This is a bad analogy. If you watched the recent Olympic fencing competition, you would have seen the many times when the electronic system failed to register properly. Video was then used to determine if a touch had been made. It is a totally different application, used only in a small area of observation, not on a 1Km course. And it still doesn’t work well!
