Philadelphia Cup Team Race, Les Ammarreurs, Guernsey by Elliott Caleta Women head the field in Philadelphia Team Walk The women walkers achieved head of the field individual success in the Philadelphia Team Cup handicap one mile road walk at Les Amarreurs. One of the first walkers to start, Kay Coulson held first position to cross the line in 11.36, three seconds ahead of Harriet Payne, who in turn was another three seconds up on third to finish Rose Druckes. The women’s success continued with Joanne Le Prevost taking fourth place and leading her team to victory, backed up by Peter Beckerleg who walked to a new best time, removing well over a minute off his previous time and Rob Elliott. Page 1 of 23 Contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] Race Walking Record April 2013 In association with the Race Walking Association Philadelphia Cup Team Race cont’d The team result, in which watch times are added together, was a very close thing with only 21 seconds separating all four teams. Walk of the day was Peter Beckerleg’s new best time, whilst Terry Bates and Rose Druckes both improved on their Guernsey Age Best times for the one mile road walk. Backmarker Jason Le Noury had the fastest time of the day with 7.35, ahead of Rob Elliott 8.29 and Terry Bates 8.51. Full results later in the record. Office Solutions sponsored Eric Waldron Trophy courtesy of Rob Elliott 2 miles track walk, Osmond Priaulx, Guernsey Stuart Le Noury retained the Office Solutions Eric Waldron Trophy in the first evening race of the year. The bitterly cold evening and windy conditions did not help as he led from start to finish to cross the line in 16.39. Second man home and thirty seconds behind was Phil Lockwood with past winner Rob Elliott back in third. Rose Druckes was the quickest of the women ahead of Harriet Payne. Page 2 of 23 Contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] Race Walking Record April 2013 In association with the Race Walking Association 10 km Isle of Man road walking championships and Y.A.G. champ courtesy of N&K Partingdon The re-arranged championships, delayed by the recent snow, took place last Thursday evening and resulted in an excellent night of racing. All age groups (6 of them) started together with the under 11/13 1km category first to finish. Eight started and all should be encouraged after their performance and hopefully will continue to train and race. Harry Read was the first boy across the line with Leah Goddard just pipping Emily Hunter for top honours in the girl’s race. Stephen Waddington was the lone entrant in the 2km, the distance he will race in the National championships in Coventry at the end of this month. Similarly, for Jason Turner and Tom Partington, 3km was also a try-out for the National championships and they were closely matched with Jason edging away in the final kilometre. The 5km is the distance under 17 Rebecca Greatbatch will race and she dominated the race ahead of the seniors and was only just outside her personal best time, recent newcomer Emma Read was second and super vet Enid Watson took third. 22 lined up for the 10km championship and on the calm cold night conditions seemed good for racing. A cautious start saw juniors Adam Cowin and Alex Eaton along with leading lady Michelle Turner at the head of the field. After halfway the pace increased with Adam breaking away and covering the second half in under 24 minutes. Alex came home second, also with a negative split as did Michelle as she took the ladies title. Third male to finish was Brian Wade who made remarkable progress with a 53 minute 03 second time, just getting the better of Chris Cale and Vinny Lynch. Second in the ladies went to Marie Jackson who is back hitting fine performances, such that she is amongst the best in the world in her age group and subject to ratification, set a new Manx age group record at the distance. Steph Quayle was 3rd lady, showing excellent technique along with Michelle and Marie. Manx Harriers would like to thank all the officials and helpers on the night who helped make it a good event. European Veterans Indoor Championship at San Sebastion- Donostia by Eric Horwill Overall, a satisfactory haul of medals! The Indoor events were well organised and avoided the overcrowded tracks of some previous championships. However the Judges continued to decimate some of the women’s fields and were generally rather inconsistent. Our British team suffered no less than 6 DQs indoors. The outdoor 5kms were held on a flat, fast course in the suburbs of Errenteria. The location ensured protection from the prevailing winds, and with the sun shining most of the time, provided much the warmest day we had. Many of the competition made use of the water station! We had 4 DQs despite a slightly more realistic attitude from the judges. It was good to see Roger Michell doing well in a major event, having suffered a stroke a little over a year ago. Results later in record. Page 3 of 23 Contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] Race Walking Record April 2013 In association with the Race Walking Association 2nd South Yorkshire Race Walking League Millhouses Park 16/04/13 by Brian Adams In this South Yorkshire League event walkers join the race at different times according to the distance they are walking and the handicap they have been given. With 2km remaining Alana Zeidler was in 3rd position but steadily moving through towards the front, Ana Garcia was moving faster 2 mins back and still in last place. Alana passed Ella Sharkey to hit the front with 500m to go wondering if Ana would snatch victory away from her. She held on to the lead to cross the line 29 seconds ahead of Ana just 3 seconds outside her recent personal best.

Some of the main contenders include • The winners of the 12 walk events in the Australian Junior T&F Championships • Tyler Jones, Kyle Swan and Clara Smith who all bettered the World Youth qualifying standard at the above champs • Chris Erickson who did a PB of 1:22:08 in taking 10th place in the IAAF Challenge event in Nomi, Japan • Ashleigh Resch who won the Girls 1 Mile walk at the USA National Indoor T&F Champs with a new US National Girls record of 7:00.33. Having analysed all the results, I am pleased to announce that Kyle Swan is my overall choice. I am sure that you will agree he is a worthy choice once you review my explanation. He came into the summer season with a PB of 46:50 and needed to improve to 44:15 or better to have any chance of World Youth Championships selection, but his form was well off that sort of time. He had carried an injury through the second half of 2014 and was struggling to get back into shape as the summer progressed.
