My mom made me and I hated it, but now, looking back, I really wish I could play the piano. When you think of Boise, Idaho, which for folks in Georgia may not happen too often, you probably think of the very successful Boise State football Obviously Hilton Head is a very beachy place and, while it’s not very creative, program, and its very, very blue field. To really take advantage of the time when you are together, that meant a lot to me. Frierson: What was the biggest adjustment when you moved to Hilton Head and started playing a lot more tournaments in the South? Frierson: If you could have played with or against anyone in history, who would it be? Gould: The weather, really, it’s a big adjustment. Gould: There’s not much of that, but I really enjoy reading. I don’t really read that much during the school year, but usually in the summer I’ll go to the pool and just read a book. When the No. 3 Georgia women’s tennis team, which recently lost in the quarterfinals of the Southeastern Conference tournament, arrives at an away match, it arrives in style. Inside the red exterior of the Prevost XLII from the Russell Coach Company, the Bulldogs have all the amenities needed for the typical five or six hour road trip. The bus provides the Bulldogs the ability to sleep, do school work or mentally prepare for the upcoming next match. The interior bus is divided into three sections. In the front, there are plush couches, tables and booths in which the players usually hang out with one another. The middle section contains divots in the wall with beds. Both sides of the bus contain nine beds, stacked three-high on top of one another, where the women said they typically nap after matches. The team’s coaching staff finds their serenity in the back of the bus. Surrounded by windows is a table and couches, where the coaches usually stay during road trips to give the players time to bond as a team. Though the coaches spend the majority of the trip in their part of the bus, the women are still expected to maintain team standards. Junior Mariana Gould said there are expectations that go without saying as far as rules go, such as being on their phones near match time. “We don’t really have rules,” Gould said. “We just know what the right thing to do is. We would rather be hanging out and being together anyways than being on our phones. It’s definitely a source of team bonding.” On a typical six-hour road trip, the Bulldogs said they spend a majority of the trip hanging out in the front. However, when physical exhaustion or school stress kicks in, they use the bus’ resources. Gould said she is not focused so much on her schoolwork on the bus, but how she can rest between matches or in preparation of a match weekend. “Oh man, its awesome,” Gould said. “It has beds, so we can just pass out. I have a hard time studying because I get dizzy, so we can just sleep all the way there if we want. And I definitely want to.” The Bulldogs said they were pretty divided on how they liked to spend their time on the bus. While some, like Gould, liked to catch an extra few hours of sleep, others were more likely to be studying or having down time. “I’m actually neither a studier or a sleeper,” junior Ellen Perez said. “I’m the type that likes to stay at the front of the bus, listening to music, talking to everyone and watching TV. I guess I’ll study if it’s absolutely neces- sary, but it’s definitely not my first choice.” During this season the Bulldogs have taken this bus nine times during their away schedule. That’s about forty hours that the Bulldogs have spent between the walls of the Prevost XLII. Freshman Marta Gonzalez said having such a nice bus definitely makes the long road trips easier. She said it was a luxury and allowed the team to have almost as much relaxation and togetherness as possible. “It’s a really nice bus,” Gonzalez said. “It definitely makes the trips easier because we can kind of do whatever we want and take a second and relax in a comfortable place and get ready for our next practice or match.”
