Cutting Tales from the History of Hawkes, the DRESSED TO KILL M ilitary and Civil Tailors. Estd. 1711. THE GENERAL W HO NEARLY LOST HIS HEAD War was killing off Mr. Hawkes' first customers In 1771. So he invented the shako. In consequence the general and his troops kept their heads. Instead of being slashed to ribbons, they collected ribbons galore. Hawkes was handsomely rewarded .... so many customers returned to settle their accounts. NO HEADACHES FOR THE FIGHTING LORD The customers of Hawkes’ successors were browned off by the Abyssinian campaign. Hawkes produced, out of a hat. a corking idea which worked like magic, against sun. Lord Napier, Commander in Abyssinia, suffered no headaches in his Hawkes' helmet and captured Magdala in 1867. IN THE WARS AGAIN The British have regularly gone Into battle with glory and Hawkes' uniforms. Enough have survived to keep the Arm going .... and on victory parades and ceremonial occasions their splendid Hawkes’ uniforms have always lent colour to the occasion. A PEACEFUL ENDING As well as uniforms, Hawkes now cut city suits and country-wear for more peaceful pursuits .... and match Jet-age speed with immedlate-wear service. But there still remains the same military precision of cutting, the same traditional pride in a first-class Job, and the same air of style. As history has proved, Hawkes can always rise to the occasion in suitable style. Send for an illustrated catalogue and subscription account booklet HAWKES OF SAVILE ROW I SAVILE ROW. LONDON, W.l. Army Secretariat Army Headquarters IDL 24 Blenheim Building Marlborough Lines Andover Hampshire, SP11 8HJ United Kingdom Ref: FOI2017/10087/13/04/79464 E-mail: [email protected] Website: www.army.mod.uk XXX XXXXXXXXXXX 5 December 2017 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Dear XXXXXX, Thank you for your email of 14 October in which you clarified your request of 6 October to the following : ‘In particular please clarify what you mean by ‘people from Scotland’. Are you seeking information regarding individuals who identify themselves as being Scottish regardless of where they live now, or people who currently have a Scottish address regardless of their background or country of origin? Please note that for the MOD Joint Personnel Administration, some of the nationality options an individual can record themselves as include ‘British’, ‘Scottish’ or ‘British Scottish’. I was mainly looking for those having joined the Army from a Scottish address as I’m looking at how many people located in Scotland join the Army. Further clarification is required concerning the second part of your request - please clarify if you want Corps and Infantry Regiment (In essence Cap badge) or Corps and Infantry totals. Please note that a proportion of those who joined the untrained strength in 2016 may still be in training. Yes please, looking for Cap Badge of entrants from Scotland should this information exist. Finally please confirm that you require the information for both parts of your request by Financial Years 2014, 2015 & 2016. Yes please, If the information exists for each year then I would be grateful for this. If this is significantly time consuming then 2016 would be sufficient.’ I am treating your correspondence as a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000.

COUNCIL – 4TH SEPTEMBER 2006 Report of the Chief Executive 5.1 FREEDOM OF ENTRY – ROYAL ANGLIAN REGIMENT Purpose of Report To recognise the service and achievements by the Royal Anglian Regiment and its close links with the Borough of Charnwood by granting them Freedom of entry to the Borough of Charnwood. Recommendation That Freedom of Entry to the Borough of Charnwood be granted upon the Royal Anglian Regiment. Background to Freedom of Entry The practice of granting the 'Freedom of Entry' upon military units has its roots deep in the history of local government; it is an interesting example of the power and influence of old boroughs in the past. During the Middle Ages, formed bodies of troops were not allowed to march through a borough without seeking the permission of the Council. As most boroughs were surrounded by a fortified wall the city fathers were in a position to refuse access if, for some reason, they were suspicious of the Military Commander's intentions. The Freedom of entry would normally be granted to locally based troops once mutual confidence and friendship had been established and when the citizens were satisfied that the troops would protect their interests. Permission to enter confers upon individual Regiments the right "to march through the city with due ceremonial, drums beating, bands playing and banner flying', in recognition of the confidence, trust and friendship existing between the citizens and soldiers. Such permission is accompanied by a sealed and illuminated certificate, which is presented at a formal parade where the Mayor inspects the assembled troops and then invites all involved to a reception.
