Compensation by School and Trends 14 Message from the director

Over the past year, The Starr Career Development Center revised its mission and embarked on a process of integrating the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ Career Readiness Competencies into all aspects of our services/work. This year also saw numerous changes and trends on both the national and Baruch specific level. In particular, The Starr Career Development Center (Starr) increased its role as a conduit to connect employers with students via clubs and organizations. Employers increased student engagement through more off campus events and virtual information sessions. As a result of these Ellen Stein - Director changes and the relatively strong economy (through 2019), it is likely students may have used multiple sources, in addition to Starr, to find employment opportunities. It is also likely that these more direct channels of communication between employers and clubs/professional association conferences may have resulted in students and employers being less likely to report job/internship outcomes back to career services.

Nonetheless, student and employer activity on campus remained strong. We are grateful to the many employers, donors, faculty, staff, alumni and volunteers that enable us to provide the top-notch services that students and administration have come to expect. Starr could not do what we do without the longstanding support of the Starr Foundation, Joel and Lillian Cohen, George Fina, the Baruch College Fund, and many dedicated alumni. Starr gratefully acknowledges the generosity of the following alumni and employer sponsors for supporting our leadership programs: MUFG, the David Shulman Family Charitable Foundation, Max Berger, Christine Li-Au Yeung and Raymond Au Yeung, Darren Smith, Jack Kong, Chiyan Mui, and others. In addition, we are appreciative of the many alumni that have given of their time to mentor, coach, recruit and support our students.

Starr is also proud to have The CUNY Career Success Initiative grant for the Bridge to Baruch Program (B2B), renewed. This program enables transfer students to become Career Ready prior to their first day of classes on campus. The B2B team is honored to have received two best practices awards from the Career Services Association of for Campus Collaborations and Technology. Starr presented B2B at the first virtual National Career Development Association Global Conference.

In addition to the Max Berger Pre-Law Internship Stipend and the Wendy Heyman Public Interest Fellowship Stipend, Starr is proud to have launched a third stipend program to help students supplement the cost of taking on an internship. This new stipend is the Sydney and Laura Gilbert Award, which is designed to help ensure that students have the resources they need to take on an unpaid or underpaid internship.

These initiatives, along with our student leadership programs, regular offerings to students, and numerous employer, alumni and volunteer engagements, help provide students with the knowledge, guidance, training, networking, and opportunities to successfully launch their careers.

01 Taking advantage of Baruch’s invaluable resources, including the Financial Leadership Program, the Rising Starr Sophomore Program, and the Investment Management Group, has been critical in developing and preparing myself for a career and life beyond Baruch.

Job Posting Trends

As numbers of postings seem to decline, the Starr team has observed national trends of employers gaining increased access to students through campus clubs, LinkedIn and organizations as well as national conferences. It is therefore, not surprising that employer and students may be connecting in a larger variety of ways. In addition, employers often seek to convert internships into full-time offers, thereby reducing the number of full time positions that need to be posted.
