PLANTING DATA Available supply Available supply (uncommitted fruit) is the difference between estimated supply and Derivation of planting data tables committed intake. It is the amount of fruit estimated to be available on the open (spot) Planting data is not derived from the 2009 South Australian Utilisation and Pricing market. NB If the committed intake is higher than the estimated supply, this indicates Survey of wineries. The information is obtained from the vineyard register maintained a discrepancy in production forecasts between the wineries and ABARE. In this case, by the Phylloxera and Grape Industry Board of South Australia. available supply is recorded as zero – rather than as a negative number. The Board is required under the Phylloxera and Grape Industry Act 1995 to maintain a Demand (required intake) complete and accurate register of grapegrowers in the state. State summary Overview of vintage statistics 2009

State and regional overview The total crush of South Australian winegrapes in 2009 was 730,904 tonnes. This There were a total of 3794 growers registered with the Board as at 30 April 2009. was 85,000 tonnes (10%) below the 2008 harvest. All regions had a reduced crop 2231 growers (59%) have properties smaller than 10 hectares and account for compared with 2008 except the Clare Valley and Currency Creek, but all were 13% of the total vineyard area, while 120 growers (3%) have properties larger higher than in 2007 – except McLaren Vale and Eden Valley. Most regions had than 100 hectares (in the same region) and account for 38% of the vineyard area. good winter rains, warm dry conditions during spring and a mild early summer, which set the vines up well; the heat wave in late January – early February varied in its impact depending on the timing relative to veraison, condition of the canopy Projections for future supply and demand and water availability in each region. Disease pressure was generally low. Information on bearing area taken from the ABS vineyard survey is used by the The McLaren Vale harvest was the lowest for at least 10 years, while the Barossa Australian Bureau of Agriculture and Resource Economics (ABARE) to produce Valley, Langhorne Creek and Adelaide Hills were all down by around 20 – 25%. projections of future production by variety and region, using long-term historical The Riverland crush was virtually identical to the 2008 crush. average yield figures, adjusted where necessary in the short-term by factors such as water availability. These supply projections are included in the survey report, The total estimated purchase value of the crush was $487 million, down by nearly together with the wineries’ estimates of future demand and committed intake, $300 million from last year, and the average purchase value per tonne across the which are collected in this survey. The estimated production for 2010 for South state was down from $936 per tonne to $667 per tonne – one third below the Australia is around 797,000 tonnes – similar to the 2008 harvest. Approximately average value ten years ago in 1999 ($999 per tonne). The average purchase 800,000 tonnes is either winery grown fruit or already contracted; therefore there values for the major varieties of nearly every region decreased, with Chardonnay is not expected to be any surplus fruit next year – although the underlying demand falling to a record low in many regions. (requirement) is only 708,000 tonnes. The ABARE estimated supply of grapes for South Australia in 2014 is around Varietal overview 880,000 tonnes. This estimate is based on the assumption of a return to “normal” growing conditions and does not take into account any residual effects of drought The red crush was 439,705 tonnes; the white crush was 291,199 tonnes. Red and water restrictions or industry restructuring initiatives. This would result in an varieties were hit harder by the heat in 2009, and this year decreased their share oversupply of nearly 120,000 tonnes, as winery demand for 2014 as reported in of the crush from 68% in 2008 to 60%. Among the white varieties, Chardonnay the survey is only 760,000 tonnes. Considering that the state produced close Sauvignon second at 31%. Across all varieties, the proportion of purchased fruit to 1 million tonnes in 2006, it is possible that the production potential in five years’ was 72%, compared with 75% in 2008 and 80% in 2007. time could exceed 1 million tonnes – depending on seasonal conditions and removals that occur in the next few years – which would further exacerbate the Vineyard plantings oversupply situation. Planting data derived from the Phylloxera and Grape Industry Board’s vineyard All major white varieties except Pinot Gris are likely to be in surplus by 2014 – register shows that there were 78,685 hectares planted to vines in South Australia including Chardonnay (29% surplus) and Sauvignon Blanc (18%). Among the red as at 30 April 2009. This represents a net decrease in the total area of around 30 varieties, small surpluses are expected in most varieties except Cabernet hectares since April 2008. There was a total of 969 hectares (1% of the total Sauvignon, but for Pinot Noir there is an expected shortfall of 7,600 tonnes – or area) planted in spring 2008 (including topworking and replants as well as new 40% of the estimated supply. area). There were nearly twice as many new plantings of red than white varieties, compared with a roughly equal split in 2008. The most planted varieties were Shiraz (355 ha), Sauvignon Blanc (140 ha) and Pinot Gris (73 ha) despite indications that there will be an oversupply of Sauvignon Blanc within five years.

Adelaide Plains Wine Region

Regional summary report

2009

Adelaide Plains Vintage overview

Overview of vintage statistics The reported harvest from the Adelaide Plains in 2009 was 3,720 tonnes, well below the 2008 harvest and similar to the 2007 harvest. The total value of grapes from the Adelaide Plains decreased by more than 50% to just under $3 million in 2009 compared with $6 million in 2008. The average purchase value for the major varieties was significantly lower, with Shiraz down by over $200 per tonne. There were 13 hectares of new plantings recorded in the Adelaide Plains region in spring 2008 – all Pinot Gris. The region has a total area of 744 hectares. The estimated production from the Adelaide Plains vineyards for 2010 is 5,000 tonnes according to the ABARE supply forecast, which is lower than the total committed intake. These figures do not change substantially over the forecast period, with the supply forecast remaining constant and the committed intake falling slightly to 4,600 tonnes in 2014. However, based on the planting data recorded by PGIBSA, the region has a much higher potential production of around 7,000 tonnes. Across the state, assuming "normal" growing conditions, there is expected to be a 120,000 tonne surplus compared with demand in 2014 (see State Summary section).

Barossa Valley Vintage overview

Vintage overview Overview of vintage statistics In 2009 budburst was generally about two weeks later than the previous The harvest from the Barossa Valley (including Barossa zone – other) was season, with initial foliage reflecting a somewhat uneven budburst. 51,601 tonnes in 2009, 15,000 tonnes less than the 2008 harvest and the However, as temperatures increased canopies began to regain their lowest crush since 2003, apart from the very low 2007 harvest of under normal balance. Climatic conditions were ideal for flowering and set, 40,000 tonnes. The total value of grapes from the region was just over $60 however, some shatter was observed in Shiraz and Grenache across million, and average purchase values in all the major varieties decreased various blocks. Verasion generally occurred on time through the ripening despite the lower tonnages. Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon decreased by process, although it was delayed during a heat spike that was experienced $200 per tonne and Cabernet Sauvignon by $300 per tonne, while over 10 consecutive days in late January-early February. The mild and Chardonnay decreased by $250 per tonne to a record low price for the region dry conditions that followed in February slowed ripening, as the vines re- of $854 per tonne. adjusted after the heat wave. New plantings in the Barossa Valley in spring 2008 (including top-working

This is 2% of the In relative terms, the season was a mixed bag of cool temperatures and total area, slightly less than last year and above the state average of 1% new heat spikes, with little rain over the harvest period. This meant that planting. disease identification and control was minimal. Cropping levels were significantly down in all varieties but most particularly in Shiraz and The estimated production from the Barossa Valley for 2010 is around 78,000 Semillon, with Chardonnay and Riesling fairing better in response to tonnes – assuming a return to full potential. This would be similar to the earlier picking times. The Shiraz wines in 2009 are nicely structured and 2006 crush of just under 80,000 tonnes. The wineries’ committed intake is perfumed showing characters of mulberries and mixed plums. 69,000 tonnes, leaving only 9,000 tonnes (12%) uncontracted.

Robin Nettelbeck In 2014, the estimated production is expected to increase to 84,000 tonnes, Yalumba Wines and Phylloxera and Grape Industry Board of which 66% (56,000 tonnes) is already under contract or winery grown fruit. This leaves an estimated 28,000 tonnes to be sold on the open market or signed up in the intervening period. Across the state, assuming "normal" growing conditions, there is expected to be a 120,000 tonne surplus compared with demand in 2014 (see State Summary section).

The unprecedented heat wave in the and replacements) were negligible for the second year in a row. last ten days of January however, brought the whites forward in fruit ripeness and resulted in a record early start for the sparkling varieties. The estimated production from Currency Creek vineyards for 2010 is around 7,800 tonnes – well below the 2009 vintage. The newness and The maritime influence over the Currency Creek wine region leads to low rapid growth of the region may account for an under-estimate of the average summer ripening temperatures, thereby making it a late maturing potential production by ABARE, or there may have been some district. Fortunately, this factor meant that the later white varieties and the misclassification of the fruit between this region and other parts of the reds where just entering late veraison when the heatwave hit, resulting Fleurieu zone. After this burst of early heat, the vintage did in fact return to “normal”. The The amount of fruit already committed to the wineries for 2010 is over 12,000 tonnes – suggesting that the supply forecast may underestimate perfect cool and dry early autumn days and cold nights that followed created optimal fruit ripening conditions thereby allowing flavour production, and also indicating that there is unlikely to be any surplus fruit development while holding the acid. SA Winegrape Utilisation and Pricing Survey 2009 67 Phylloxera and Grape Industry Board of SA 68 Fleurieu zone (other) includes the GI regions Southern Fleurieu zone - other Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island, as well as any other plantings in the zone that are near but outside the larger GI regions of Currency Creek, McLaren Vale and Regional summary report 2009 Langhorne Creek (referred to as “Fleurieu zone (other)” in tables). The total area of vines included in this definition is around 900 hectares.

Overview of vintage statistics The harvest from Fleurieu zone (other) was 3,937 tonnes in 2009 – very similar to the 2007 harvest and substantially below the 2008 harvest. The total estimated value of grapes from these vineyards decreased to $3.5 million, which is less than the 2007 value. There were virtually no new plantings in this area in spring 2008. The ABARE estimated production for this area in 2010 is around 4,500 tonnes. Given the 2008 production and the planted area (900 hectares), it is likely that the ABARE figure underestimates the potential production from this very new grapegrowing area, although water availability as well as seasonal conditions will determine whether its full production potential is reached in future vintages. The production forecast does not increase significantly over the five year projection period, but the wineries' committed intake decreases to 3,000 tonnes by 2014, leaving at least 1,600 tonnes of fruit likely to be available on the open market. Fleurieu zone - other Winegrape intake summary - vintage 2009

McLaren Vale Vintage overview

Vintage report Overview of vintage statistics The 2009 vintage in McLaren Vale was a “tale of two vales.” A thirteen day The harvest from McLaren Vale in 2009 was 33,484 tonnes, the lowest for heat wave in late January and early February meant a vintage that started at least 10 years - even below the 2007 harvest. Overall Across the state, assuming "normal" growing conditions, there is expected volume in the region was below average. to be a 120,000 tonne surplus compared with demand in 2014 (see State Summary section). The heatwave placed a great deal of pressure on all growers to optimise their irrigation for the conditions. With growers utilising mains and groundwater, restrictions placed a premium on water budgeting. Growers utilising reclaimed water were affected by insufficient water storage.

The region’s leading winemakers and grape growers are confident that the 2009 McLaren Vale wines will be of the award winning standard the region has become known for.

Regional summary report

2009

Padthaway Vintage overview

Vintage report The region is normally best known for its premium quality Shiraz The 2008-09 growing season had 25% less rainfall than the long term production, but this year Cabernet Sauvignon looks like being the region’s average (LTA), with the majority of rain falling in December. Prior to the stand-out variety, with most growers reporting Cabernet results matching if December rainfall the actual was 70% below LTA. Average minimum and not better than their Shiraz. maximum temperatures were very close to LTA and the number of frost events was minimal with only those areas that are reliably frosted being David Edwards slightly damaged. President, Padthaway Grape Growers Association

The low rainfall in November meant that there were no issues with flowering or fruit set. Temperatures in November and December were Overview of vintage statistics average to slightly cool, providing good conditions for even ripening. The harvest from Padthaway in 2009 was 40,552 tonnes, about 20%

below the 2008 harvest but still above the average for the past 10 years. The heatwave that carried through from late January into early February The total value of grapes from the region decreased from $47 million to caused some problems, mainly with white varieties that could not stand up $35 million, with average purchase values for Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon to the intense day time heat and the lack of cooling at night, but the and Chardonnay all decreasing by $100 to $200 per tonne. majority of red varieties had passed through veraison and were able to continue ripening if they had an adequate canopy. There was very little new planting in Padthaway in spring 2008, although more than the previous year. The wineries’ committed intake is 39,000 tonnes, leaving

around 6,000 tonnes as yet uncontracted. In 2014 the estimated Vintage 09 commenced in the second week of February, similar to production is 54,000 tonnes, of which less than half (25,000 tonnes) is previous vintages in the region. With the rainfall in mid-March slowing already under contract or winery grown fruit. This leaves around 28,000 ripening in some vineyards the vintage did not conclude until the last week tonnes available on the open market. of April, two weeks later than average. Across the state, assuming "normal" growing conditions, there is expected Key regional varieties had mixed yield results this year. White varieties to be a 120,000 tonne surplus compared with demand in 2014 (see State such as Chardonnay and Riesling had yields reduced by approx 20% Summary section). while Sauvignon Blanc yields were similar to long term averages.

The region again looks like producing some good quality Chardonnay, with the usual premium areas again showing good flavour development. Sauvignon Blanc is another variety which is starting to show some good quality signs from this region.

South Australia (other) Vintage overview

South Australia (other) includes the GI region of Southern Flinders Overview of vintage statistics Ranges, the Peninsulas zone, and the vineyards in Mount Lofty Ranges (other) and Lower Murray zone (other) – see map on cover page. The The harvest from South Australia (other) was 3,128 tonnes in 2009, total area of vines included in this definition is around 1,000 hectares. slightly below the 2008 and the 2007 vintages. The total value of grapes from the region decreased to $2.3 million compared with just under $4 million last year. There were no new plantings across the area covered by SA zone (other) in spring 2008 (even including top-working and replacements). The ABARE estimated production from the South Australia (other) vineyards for 2010 is 4,400 tonnes. The wineries’ committed intake is almost the same, leaving no expected surplus fruit. The estimated supply stays the same across the forecast period, while the wineries’ committed intake reduces to 1,000 tonnes, leaving an estimated 3,500 tonnes uncommitted at this stage for 2014. Across the state, assuming "normal" growing conditions, there is expected to be a 120,000 tonne surplus compared with demand in 2014 (see State Summary section).
