Extensible Markup Language (XML) and Its Role in Supporting the Global Justice XML Data Model Extensible Markup Language, or "XML," is a computer programming language designed to transmit both data and the meaning of the data. XML accomplishes this by being a markup language, a mechanism that identifies different structures within a document. Structured information contains both content (such as words, pictures, or video) and an indication of what role content plays, or its meaning. XML identifies different structures by assigning data "tags" to define both the name of a data element and the format of the data within that element. Elements are combined to form objects. An XML specification defines a standard way to add markup language to documents, identifying the embedded structures in a consistent way. By applying a consistent identification structure, data can be shared between different systems, up and down the levels of agencies, across the nation, and around the world, with the ease of using the Internet. In other words, XML lays the technological foundation that supports interoperability. XML also allows structured relationships to be defined. The ability to represent objects and their relationships is key to creating a fully beneficial justice information sharing tool. A simple example can be used to illustrate this point: A "person" object may contain elements like physical descriptors (e.g., eye and hair color, height, weight), biometric data (e.g., DNA, fingerprints), and social descriptors (e.g., marital status, occupation). A "vehicle" object would also contain many elements (such as description, registration, and/or lien-holder). The relationship between these two objects—person and vehicle— presents an interesting challenge that XML can address. -

The OdfWeave Package Max Kuhn max.kuhn@pfizer.com August 7, 2007 1 Introduction The Sweave function (Leisch, 2002) is a powerful component of R. It can be used to combine R code with LATEX so that the output of the code is embedded in the processed document. The capabilities of Sweave were later extended to HTML format in the R2HTML package. A written record of an analysis can be created using Sweave, but additional annotation of the results may be needed such as context–specific interpretation of the results. Sweave can be used to automatically create reports, but it can be difficult for researchers to add their subject–specific insight to pdf or HTML files. The odfWeave package was created so that the functionality of Sweave can used to generate documents that the end–user can easily edit. The markup language used is the Open Document Format (ODF), which is an open, non– proprietary format that encompasses text documents, presentations and spreadsheets. Version 1.0 of the specification was finalized in May of 2005 (OASIS, 2005). One year later, the format was approved for release as an ISO and IEC International Standard. There are several editors/office suites that can produce ODF files. OpenOffice is a free, open source editor that, as of version 2.0, uses ODF as the default format. odfWeave has been tested with OpenOffice to produce text documents. As of the current version, odfWeave processing of presentations and spreadsheets should be considered to be experimental (but should be supported in subsequent versions). OpenOffice can be used to export the document to MS Word, rich text format, HTML, plain text or pdf formats. -

Methods of researching the contribution of social tagging and folksonomy are described, and outstanding research questions are presented. This is a new area of research, where theoretical perspectives and relevant research methods are only now being defined. This paper provides a framework for the study of folksonomy, tagging and social tagging systems. Three broad approaches are identified, focusing first, on the folksonomy itself (and the role of tags in indexing and retrieval); secondly, on tagging (and the behaviour of users); and thirdly, on the nature of social tagging systems (as socio-technical frameworks). Elrod, University of Michigan, USA Abstract: Streaming technologies continue to shift audience viewing practices. However, aside from addressing how these developments allow for more complex serialized streaming television, not much work has approached concerns of specific genres that fall under the field of digital streaming. How do emergent and encouraged modes of viewing across various SVOD platforms re-shape how audiences affectively experience and interact with genre and generic texts? What happens to collective audience discourses as the majority of viewers’ situated consumption of new serial content becomes increasingly accelerated, adaptable, and individualized? Given the range and diversity of genres and fandoms, which often intersect and overlap despite their current fragmentation across geographies, platforms, and lines of access, why might it be pertinent to reconfigure genre itself as a site or node of affective experience and interactive, collective production? Finally, as studies of streaming television advance within the industry and academia, how might we ponder on a genre-by- genre basis, fandoms’ potential need for time and space to collectively process and interact affectively with generic serial texts – in other words, to consider genres and generic texts themselves as key mediative sites between the contexts of production and those of fans’ interactivity and communal, affective pleasure? This article draws together threads of commentary from the industry, scholars, and culture writers about SVOD platforms, emergent viewing practices, speculative genres, and fandoms to argue for the centrality of genre in interventions into audience studies. -

Structured, Semi-structured and Unstructured data -Information in databases is a structured data (employee, company, etc), the database checks to ensure that all data follows the structure and constraints specified in the schema 1 - some attributes may be shared among various entities, other attributes may exist only in few entities Semi-structured data; additional attributes can be introduced later Self-describing data as schema can change Example: Collect a list of biographical references related to a certain research project - Books - Technical reports - Research articles in Journals or Conferences Each have different attributes and information; one reference has all information, others have partial; some references may occur in the future Web, tutorials, etc.. State of West Virginia Office of Technology Policy: Acceptable Use of Instant Messaging Issued by the CTO Policy No: WVOT-PO1010 Issued: 11/24/2009 Revised: 12/22/2020 Page 1 of 4 1.0 PURPOSE This policy details the use of State-approved instant messaging (IM) systems and is intended to: • Describe the limitations of the use of this technology; • Discuss protection of State information; • Describe privacy considerations when using the IM system; and • Outline the applicable rules applied when using the State-provided system. This document is not all-inclusive and the WVOT has the authority and discretion to appropriately address any unacceptable behavior and/or practice not specifically mentioned herein. 2.0 SCOPE This policy applies to all employees within the Executive Branch using the State-approved IM systems, unless classified as “exempt” in West Virginia Code Section 5A-6-8, “Exemptions.” The State’s users are expected to be familiar with and to comply with this policy, and are also required to use their common sense and exercise their good judgment while using Instant Messaging services. 3.0 POLICY 3.1 State-provided IM is appropriate for informal business use only. Examples of this include, but may not be limited to the following: 3.1.1 When “real time” questions, interactions, and clarification are needed; 3.1.2 For immediate response; 3.1.3 For brainstorming sessions among groups; 3.1.4 To reduce chances of misunderstanding; 3.1.5 To reduce the need for telephone and “email tag.” 3.2 Employees must only use State-approved instant messaging. -

Geotagging photos to share field trips with the world During the past few years, numerous new online tools for collaboration and community building have emerged, providing web-users with a tremendous capability to connect with and share a variety of resources. Coupled with this new technology is the ability to ‘geo-tag’ photos, i.e. give a digital photo a unique spatial location anywhere on the surface of the earth. More precisely geo-tagging is the process of adding geo-spatial identification or ‘metadata’ to various media such as websites, RSS feeds, or images. This data usually consists of latitude and longitude coordinates, though it can also include altitude and place names as well. Therefore adding geo-tags to photographs means adding details as to where as well as when they were taken. Geo-tagging didn’t really used to be an easy thing to do, but now even adding GPS data to Google Earth is fairly straightforward. The basics Creating geo-tagged images is quite straightforward and there are various types of software or websites that will help you ‘tag’ the photos (this is discussed later in the article). In essence, all you need to do is select a photo or group of photos, choose the "Place on map" command (or similar). Most programs will then prompt for an address or postcode. Alternatively a GPS device can be used to store ‘way points’ which represent coordinates of where images were taken. Some of the newest phones (Nokia N96 and i- Phone for instance) have automatic geo-tagging capabilities. These devices automatically add latitude and longitude metadata to the existing EXIF file which is already holds information about the picture such as camera, date, aperture settings etc.
