Universal Pictures Media Dossier
Universal Pictures Media Dossier For: Dr. Gregory Levey Strategic Media Relations PC8107 By: Nikolai Pajkovic 500581586 [email protected] EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The aim of this public relations campaign is to first and foremost announce and promote the release of The Hunt directed Craig Zobel and produced by Blumhouse Productions. The film will be released in theatres across North America on June 12th, 2020. Universal Pictures cancelled the film’s initial release date of September 27th, 2019 following the Dayton, El Paso, and Gilroy shootings. Therefore, a secondary objective of this campaign is to offer the public clarification for the film’s initial cancellation, as well as provide an explanation as to why this summer presents us with a more suitable release date. In doing so, our talking points, backgrounder, media release and Q&A aim to help Universal Pictures deter any unnecessary and unwarranted criticism of the film leading up to its release. I do not think that Universal Pictures should shy away from the media or from discussing the film’s potentially provocative subject matter, but when doing so should stick to our talking points. From a marketing/promotions perspective, encouraging this kind of conversation around the film will likely draw major media attention, which would possibly lead to increased box office numbers. In this dossier, a fact sheet is offered as a quick way for journalists to acquire information about the film and its release. Our talking points are intended to be used by Universal Pictures employees when dealing with the media. They aim to diminish any instances of inflammatory questioning and also look to gently reverse the narrative that The Hunt could promote violence. -

The Aesthetic Sensibility of Indie TV
The Aesthetic Sensibility of Indie TV Graig Uhlin, Oklahoma State University The 2008 financial crisis helped to usher in the end of the Sundance-Miramax era of American independent filmmaking by collapsing its funding model. Investment capital dried up, financing through advanced sales to foreign markets remained available only to select filmmakers, and a number of studio specialty divisions closed their doors. Television and streaming services stepped into this gap to provide indie film personnel more stable sources of distribution and exhibition. If we adhere to a definition of “indie” based on economics, then this transition has been a relatively smooth one: television productions have found ways to successfully translate the practices of indie film to successful shows. Take, for an example, the TBS series Search Party. Its creators Sarah-Violet Bliss and Charles Rogers previously directed the 2014 indie film Fort Tilden, a caustic take on the vapid elements of Brooklyn hipster culture, then were recruited to television by writer-producer Michael Showalter. Search Party is the first self-financed project from Jax Media, founded in 2011, and newly purchased by Imagine Entertainment. Jax is known for its auteur comedies – among them, Broad City and Difficult People – and its success partly stems from utilizing indie film’s small-scale budgeting strategies. Jax guarantees creative autonomy to marketable talent by keeping production costs low (typically $750,000 per episode). It limits shooting days and writing staffs, and incentivizes talent by funneling unspent budget back into the show. This streamlined approach is directly modeled on indie film (the Search Party producers routinely raise this comparison), demonstrating how indie film personnel have adapted to a shifting media landscape, in the absence of viable paths to stable work in filmmaking. -

A“We’re opening. We’re happy to be opening. We just don’t know what we’re opening yet,” said Jeff Hanle, Skico vice presi- dent of communications. The amount of terrain that opens will depend on how much snow falls between now and then. “At a minimum, we’ll do Nell and Bell,” Hanle said, referring to the Little Nell chairlift at the base and the old standby Bell Mountain chairlift. If that’s all that opens Nov. 17, Aspen Moun- tain will still offer more vertical feet of skiing than many of the resorts now open in Colorado, according to Hanle. The top of the Bell Mountain chair is at an elevation of about 10,500 feet. The base is at about 7,945 feet. Hanle said the ticket price can’t be set because it’s uncertain how much terrain will open. Ski passes will be able to be used.
