  • Teenager Detained Without Trial in Kashmir
UA 210/12 Index: ASA 20/027/2012 India Date: 17 July 2012 URGENT ACTION TEENAGER DETAINED WITHOUT TRIAL IN KASHMIR Teenager Saleem Beigh has been detained without trial in Jammu & Kashmir, northern India, following a grenade attack on the town police station on 19 May. Saleem Beigh’s family claims that he is 17 years old, but does not have any proof of his age. They say they are trying to get proof from his school records. According to the family, he stopped going to school a few years ago, and has since been working as a mason to support his family. According to Saleem Beigh’s family, the state police’s Special Operations Group (SOG) took him and his uncle to an SOG camp for interrogation following a grenade attack on 19 May on a local police station in Sopore town, Jammu & Kashmir, in which nine people were injured. They released his uncle the next morning, but held Saleem Beigh for 12 days. They later moved him to Sopore police station where he was detained for a further 15 days. He was later produced in a local court and transferred to Baramulla sub-jail. On 2 June, police announced that Saleem Beigh, along with Ishfaq Shafi Kana, another resident of Sopore, were arrested for their alleged involvement in the grenade attack. However, Saleem Beigh’s family has not been allowed to see the first information report or formal charge-sheet. Fearing that he may have been detained illegally, on 28 June, the family entered a petition in the Sopore court seeking his release on bail.

  • Pir Panjal Regional Festival Integrating the Isolated Border Districts in J&K & Building Peace from Below*
No 142 IPCS ISSUE BRIEF No 142 APRIL 2010 APRIL 2010 Building Peace & Countering Radicalization Pir Panjal Regional Festival Integrating the Isolated Border Districts in J&K & Building Peace from Below* D. Suba Chandran Deputy Director, IPCS, New Delhi This essay focus on two districts in the Jammu sub region of J&K—Rajouri and Poonch, along the Pir Panjal range of the outer Himalayas. The primary objective is to highlight the conflict transformation (both positive and negative) in this region during the recent years; to explore the opportunities of an Pir Panjal festival bringing the various communities together and build peace from below; integrate the border districts with the national mainstream; and improve the physical and psychological connectivity of the Pir Panjal region with the rest and remove the feeling of physical isolation. Idea of using a festival to promote tourism in J&K is not a new one; those who have witnessed the Ladakh festival, in all its colorful glory and culturally rich historical past, would agree how it has brought the region, its people and culture to the limelight. Of course, there are other places – from Dal lake to Gulmarg and from Bhaderwah to Basohli, which can easily boast the same – in terms of their rich culture, colorful people and beautiful places. The irony of J&K, however has been - there are numerous such regions in J&K, unfortunately remaining in the periphery, physically isolated and psychologically looking inward. Ladakh festival, now celebrated during August every year, attracts global attention and tourists who visit the land of moon, as it is popularly referred, to enjoy the culture, people and places.

  • Wild Edible Plants of Jammu & Kashmir State–An Ethno
Ancient Science of Life, Vol No. VII Nos. 3 & 4, January & April 1988, Pages 201 - 206 WILD EDIBLE PLANTS OF JAMMU & KASHMIR STATE – AN ETHNO- BOTANICAL STUDY T. N. SRIVASTAVA Regional Research Laboratory (CSIR) Canal Road, Jammu – 180 001, India Received: 9 April, 1987 Accepted: 11 November, 1987 ABSTRACT: While conducting the Ethno-Botanical explorations of Jammu and Kashmir State, the authors gathered information from the primitive society, Gujar, Bakarwala and other inhabitants living in far-flung areas not exposed to civilization as well as the villages, on the importance of the plants, used by them in their way of life, as medicine, food, fodder and other religio-social customs and beliefs. The present paper deals with 109 species of the wild edible plants only being used by them for food in various ways. The botanical names of the wild edible plants, local names, places of collection, parts used and mode of use, are also discussed. INTRODUCTION Recently efforts have been made to identify the folk-lore medicines of Jammu and Kashmir State (Gupta & Srivastava et al 1980, 1981 : Srivastava et al, 1978, 1980, 1981a, 1981b). Information collected on the use of wild edible plants is meager. Atal et al (1980) have discussed a few emergency food through wild flora of Sundarbani area. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ethno-Botanical Surveys were conducted in various parts of the State, Jammu & Kashmir inclusive of Ladakh, and information regarding use of the plants by the primitive society, Gujar, Bakarwal and other inhabitants of the far-flung areas not exposed to civilization as well villagers of the areas, was collected in detail.
