  • Town & Country April, 2011 the Culture: Art
Town & Country April, 2011 The Culture: Art Shows of the Season Rachel Wolf Who'll claim contemporary art supremacy this month: L.A. or New York? California's newest art impresario, Los Angeles's Museum of Contemporary Art director Jeffrey Deitch, is finally making waves in his new home. Along with a team of graffiti gurus, he'll launch the country's first full-scale museum survey of street art. "ART IN THE STREETS" (April 17-Aug. 8 at the Geffen Contemporary) traces the movement from its roots-with works by Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat to contemporary practitioners like Banksy and Shepard Fairey. It's already deliciously controversial: In December, Deitch was accused of censorship when he painted over a MoCA-commissioned mural by the street artist Blu meant to promote the April exhibition. (Deitch thought residents would be offended by the antiwar work, which depicted coffins shrouded in $1 bills.) And contentiousness won't be in short supply on the East Coast either, thanks to KARA WALKER, the New York artist best known for her raunchy silhouettes and stop-motion animations about race and womanhood. On April 23, Walker mounts her largest exhibition of new work since 2008, a two-venue show at Chelsea's Sikkema Jenkins gallery and Lehmann Maupin's Lower East Side locale (through June 4). Of particular interest is a new video that builds on the scenic work Walker did for Lincoln Center's recent production On the Levee, a drama about the worst river flood, pre-Katrina, in U.S. history. .

  • You Don't Immediately Think of Jeffrey Deitch and Larry Gagosian As
Pogrebin, Robin. Jeffrey Deitch and Larry Gagosian to Collaborate in Miami, The New York Times, October 15, 2015. You don’t immediately think of Jeffrey Deitch and Larry Gagosian as collaborators. Indeed, the two were historically competitors, dealers who represented some of the same artists at different points in their careers. But these art world heavyweights — both protégés of the dealer Leo Castelli — have known each other for years and de- cided for the first time to collaborate. The result is an ambitious exhibition on figurative painting and sculpture in Miami in December. “Larry and I have wanted to do a project together for some time,” Mr. Deitch said. “Everything came together.” The show, “Unrealism,” opens on Dec. 1 in a 20,000-square-foot space in the Moore Building in the Miami Design District and will remain through the week of Art Basel Miami Beach (Dec. 3 through 6). Craig Robins, the developer who spear- headed the district, offered Mr. Gagosian the space, and Mr. Gagosian said he thought of Mr. Deitch. “He’s one of the most imaginative, innovative curators out there,” he said. “My gallery represents a lot of figurative artists. I think it’s a very important part of what’s going on now.” Mr. Deitch had long wanted to explore the subject in a show, but said he never had the chance as the director of the Mu- seum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. When he returned to New York, he was struck by the work of emerging figurative painters — many of them women — like Ella Kruglyanskaya, Jamian Juliano-Villani and Tala Madani.

  • Miami Beach Getting Ready for Art Basel Dec. 1-4
Miami Beach getting ready for Art Basel Dec. 1-4 (AP) MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Live graffiti painting. A colossal rose bed soaring 20 feet high. Early photos of Andy Warhol, a Picasso up for auction and a naked woman living in a pig pen. They're all part of the lineup for Art Basel Miami Beach, which runs Dec. 1-4, with a host of related events beginning Nov. 30. The pig pen installation will undoubtedly be the most jaw-dropping event at the art fair. Known for photographing herself nude in subway tunnels or in front of graffiti walls, performance artist Miru Kim will be living with pigs for her performance "The Pig That Therefore I Am." "The immediate connection between pigs and me will be felt through seeing the living bodies mingle through skin," Kim told The Associated Press. A glass barrier will act as "an insatiable gap between the spectacle and the onlooker, just like in a zoo." The international art fair, sister event to Art Basel in Switzerland, is celebrating its 10th year in South Florida this December. Miami's art scene has grown tremendously since it started, and last year 46,000 people attended, not counting thousands more who took in ancillary events piggy- backing on the main arts-filled weekend. The trendy exhibits, films, parties and performances attract not just art collectors but also art-lovers of all means, tourists and many others who want to see and be seen. "The cultural growth emerged about 20 years ago when the world discovered Miami through the lens of South Beach," said Tony Goldman, chairman and CEO of The Goldman Properties Co., which has helped transform the city's historic districts into thriving, trendy neighborhoods like South Beach and the Wynwood Arts District.

  • TAYLOR Mckimens
Attualmente Taylor vive e lavora a New York. Taylor McKimens was born in Seattle (WA) in 1976 and he grew up in Winterhave. His paintings and installations blur the line between drawing and sculpture. The strong influence of comics and a childhood in a small desert-border town in California give a tragico-comic energy to his pieces. He hold solo exhibitions at the Watari Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, Deitch Projects, the Art Rock at Rockefeller Center and The Hole in New York, the Loyal Gallery in Stockholm, the Galerie Zurcher in Paris and the Annet Gelink in Amsterdam.

  • The Florine Stettheimer Collapsed Time Salon
The Florine Stettheimer Collapsed Time Salon Presented at The Armory Show, New York, March 2 -5, 2017 The Florine Stettheimer Collapsed Time Salon is presented in homage to the artist and saloniste Florine Stettheimer (1871-1944), whose remarkable life and work has influenced many artists. The Salon will be presented as a special project at The Armory Show, New York, from March 2 – 6, 2017. The first Florine Stettheimer Collapsed Time Salon was staged at the Gramercy Hotel Art Fair in 1995 in the hotel’s penthouse. The space was decorated with cellophane curtains, Doric columns, and white furniture with gold trim to evoke the atmosphere of the Stettheimer salon in her Beaux Arts Building studio. Artists whose work channeled Stettheimer, including Jane Kaplowitz, Elizabeth Peyton, and Jeff Koons were invited to display their work. There was a program of salon talks led by Francis Naumann. We were fortunate to be able to borrow some extraordinary paintings by Florine Stettheimer herself from Columbia University and private collections. Later that year, a definitive Stettheimer retrospective was presented at the Whitney Museum, curated by Elisa- beth Sussman and Barbara J. Bloemink. Since then there has been an increasing awareness of Stettheimer’s work and a deepening engagement with her legacy by contemporary artists. The Armory Show, the successor to the Gramercy Park Hotel Art Fair, asked me to present an updated version of The Florine Stettheimer Collapsed Time Sale for their March 2017 show. Some great artists have emerged since 1995 whose work connects with Florine Stettheimer’s distinctive artistic vision. The original participants in the project and some of the most exciting artists of the new generation have been invited to display their work in this year’s salon.
