NATIONAL Ranking on water departments The Ministry of Jal Shakti recently launched rankings of Central and state governmental water departments based on their efficiency targets. It also aims to create Water Resource Information System (WRIS) in all states. According to the report, Gujarat topped the ranking and Delhi was pushed to the last. Among the seven central government departments, Survey of India topped the list followed by National Institute of Hydrology and Central Water Commission. The Central Pollution Control Board received the lowest rank. Tamil Nadu was the best performer among all the states. The state was at 33rd position in 2018 and has been pushed to 13th rank this time. Kerala and CAA The Kerala government invoked Article 131 to file a petition against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in the Supreme Court. Kerala has become the first state to move the apex court challenging CAA stating that it violates Article 14, Article 21 and Article 25 of the Indian constitution. -

India to chair 3 key subsidiary bodies of UN Security Council: The Permanent Representative of India to the UN, T S Tirumurti has announced that India has been asked to chair three important committees of the UN Security Council (UNSC), during its tenure as a non-permanent member of the powerful 15-nation UN body. The three highly significant committees include: (1) Taliban Sanctions Committee (2) Counter-Terrorism Committee (3) Libyan Sanctions Committee Among these, India will chair the Counter-Terrorism Committee of UNSC in 2022, which coincides with the 75th anniversary of India’s independence. India began its two-year term at UNSC from January 01, 2021. It is the eighth time that the country has joined UNSC as the non- permanent member. In 2021, along with India, Norway, Kenya, Ireland and Mexico joined as non-permanent members in the Council. 2. Football is the world’s most popular ball game in numbers of participants and spectators. Simple in its principal rules and essential equipment, the sport can be played almost anywhere, from official football playing fields (pitches) to gymnasiums, streets, school playgrounds, parks, or beaches. Football’s governing body, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), estimated that at the turn of the 21st century there were approximately 250 million football players and over 1.3 billion people “interested” in football; in 2010 a combined television audience of more than 26 billion watched football’s premier tournament, the quadrennial month-long World Cup finals. The Origin The contemporary history of the world's favorite game spans more than 100 years. It all began in 1863 in England, when rugby football and association football branched off on their different courses and the Football Association in England was formed - becoming the sport's first governing body. Football in India Football is India's second most popular sport, next to the game of cricket. Kabaddi and field hockey are also popular. Traditionally it has enjoyed popularity in West Bengal, Goa, Kerala, Odisha, and north-eastern India, especially Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.
