BrienAs I read "Greatness and Goodness: Barbaro and his Legacy" I was instantly taken back to those many months of experiencing the ups and downs, the highs and lows, the joys but then the ultimate grief we all felt when we learned that Barbaro's greatest race- his heroic fight for his life had ended.I fell deeply in love with this special horse, whom I will never forget the first time I saw the magnificent Barbaro race, flying over the track at lightning speed, with such power and grace. I was mesmerized while watching him run during the , but I watched in disbelief and horror during that shocking moment, when the majestic stallion fell, sustaining horrendously devastating injuries at the Preakness. My heart was broken. Every day during the months that followed that tragic event, those of us who loved Barbaro prayed for good news about his recovery, avidly reading the daily chronicle posted online.Alex Brown has written a remarkable and breathtakingly beautiful coffee-table book, which truly is a celebration of Barbaro's life. He writes not only about the great horse's training and racing career, but Barbaro's tremendous legacy contributing to the saving the lives of numerous discarded and forgotten horses. Highlighted are stories about the "Fans of Barbaro" who tirelessly networked, raising donations for research, (the deadly disease which took Barbaro's life), and to save untold numbers of horses from slaughter, many of which happily found forever loving homes. It gives me pleasure to highly recommend this beautiful and deeply moving book which Alex Brown has written with an abundance of love and respect. This treasure makes a perfect gift which will certainly touch not only the hearts of racing fans and horse lovers, but anyone who has ever loved an animal.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Barbaro was a winner and so is this book by Alex BrownBy Jo Anne BlackstoneThis is the ultimate work on the life of Barbaro. Mr. Brown went to great lengths to insure that the information was accurate and descriptive of Barbaro's life. However, it is much more than the usual biography of a sports figure. It is a testament to how Barbaro's injury, treatment and death became an inspiration for doing the right thing for horses. Barbaro's fight to live along with the devotion of his owners and fans inspired thousands of people to fight for anti slaughter and horse welfare. Alex Brown was there every step of the way to communicate any and all news of Barbaro and horse welfare issues to all. His leadership and talents provided a central headquarters for Fans of Barbaro to organize to raise awareness of horse needs, raise funds for the rescue of horses and a forum in which to rally around Barbaro with prayers and support in hopes that he would survive. This book is a very complete journal of Barbaro's journey and the inspiration he gave others to fight against laminitis and to help horses have better lives. I recommend this book for all and especially to race horse owners to learn how to be exceptional owners, putting their horses first as the Jackson's did. Beautiful book.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent! The Best!By CuriousGeorgeAlex Brown nailed it! As an FOB, following Barbaro's journey on TWR, subsequently on ABR, I was delighted to know that Alex Brown was going to turn this journey into a book. I, for one, knew nothing about horses but fell in love with Barbaro from the first time I saw him. It was his Kentucky Derby win and my heart swelled with pride, as if Barbaro was mine. Alex Brown takes the reader through Barbaro's journey in such a way that it brings everyone right into the heart of the journey. We learn of Barbaro's birth, racing days, horrific tragedy, the 8 months at New Bolton and Barbaro's death. However, the book doesn't end there. The book follows Barbaro's legacy and all that has transpired, due to the love of one horse. Alex Brown tells the story in a heartfelt way that any reader will love and learn from. Whether a seasoned horse person or one that just discovered horses for the first time. He poses thoughts in a way that makes you think about so much more than just Barbaro. The anti slaughter issues, the need for safer tracks, the need for places for horses to be rehabbed or retired....loved and cared for after their racing careers are over. I have a copy of the book for myself, have donated a book to my local library, bought several copies for gifts and recently downloaded the book on my Kindle. I lose the pictures of the book on my Kindle but it is a way for me to carry the book with me forever...to be able to read passages whenever I want. Alex Brown delivers a truly wonderful story of Barbaro and his legacy.

Barbaro reeled off five easy wins to set himself up for the 2006 Kentucky Derby. He was undefeated, yet there were still doubters. Barbaro wowed everyone who saw him in the flesh as he prepared for the Kentucky Derby. His final Derby workout was sensational. In the Derby itself, he simply crushed the field to win the race by the largest winning margin in sixty years, with the fastest final quarter since in 1973. His jockey, , did not even need to resort to his stick for extra urging; Barbaro was just that good. Only the fifth undefeated Kentucky Derby winner, Barbaro seemed destined to be our first Triple Crown winner since in 1978. Barbaro trained well leading up to the Preakness and arrived at Pimlico with the swagger of a rock star. After a false start, Barbaro broke down in the early part of the race. This event was viewed on national TV by an audience devastated by this rapid turn of events. Rather than euthanize the colt, it was decided to send him to New Bolton Center in an attempt to save his life. Eight months later, on January 29, 2007, Barbaro was euthanized. Ironically, doctors had repaired his broken leg. Barbaro succumbed to the wretched disease, laminitis. Greatness and Goodness: Barbaro and his Legacy examines Barbaro's life and puts his racetrack record within the context of some of the greatest racehorses to ever run. Through beautiful photos, narrative, and the words of the people who knew him best, this one-of-a-kind book explores why Barbaro became so inspirational to so many people and why his fans turned their energy into doing good things in his name. Good work that has persisted well beyond Barbaro's all too brief life. Greatness and Goodness also explores important issues raised by the Barbaro saga, including laminitis research, racehorse retirement and horse slaughter. Alex Brown managed timwoolleyracing.com, which served as a hub of activity for Fans of Barbaro. Alex embarked on his own journey in 2007, to do additional research for this book. Alex is originally from Cheshire, England, and now resides in Lincoln University, Pennsylvania. a fascinating and moving account of a short but brilliant life.nbsp; His in-depth interview with the horse's connections - led by owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson - and the medical team that fought so hard to save Barbaro, make this a must-read for all fans.nbsp; Sportinglife.comAbout the AuthorAlex Brown managed tim woolley racing.com which served as a hub of activity for Fans of Barbaro.
