This report provides an assessment and compilation of recreation-related monitoring data sources across the National Wilderness Preservation System (NWPS). Telephone interviews with managers of all units of the NWPS and a literature search were conducted to locate studies that provide campsite impact data, trail impact data, and information about visitor characteristics. Of the 628 wildernesses that comprised the NWPS in January 2000, 51 percent had baseline campsite data, 9 percent had trail condition data and 24 percent had data on visitor characteristics. Wildernesses managed by the Forest Service and National Park Service were much more likely to have data than wildernesses managed by the Bureau of Land Management and Fish and Wildlife Service. Both unpublished data collected by the management agencies and data published in reports are included. Extensive appendices provide detailed information about available data for every study that we located. These have been organized by wilderness so that it is easy to locate all the information available for each wilderness in the NWPS. Idaho Falls, ID 8341S ABSTRACT In die course of reassessing seismic hazards at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL), several key issues have been raised concerning the effects of the earthquake source and site geology on potential strong ground motions that might be generated by a large earthquake. The design earthquake for the INEL is an approximate moment magnitude (Mw) 7 event that may occur on the southern portion of the Lemhi fault, a Basin and Range normal fault that is located on the northwestern boundary of the eastern Snake River Plain and the INEL, within 10 to 27 km of several major facilities. Because the locations of these facilities place them at close distances to a large earthquake and generally along strike of the causative fault, the effects of source rupture dynamics (e.g., directivity) could be critical in enhancing potential ground shaking at the INEL. An additional source issue that has been addressed is the value of stress drop to use in ground motion predictions. In terms of site geology, it has been questioned whether the interbedded volcanic stratigraphy beneath the ESRP and the INEL attenuates ground motions to a greater degree than a typical rock site in the western U.S. -

ATTACHMENT F: NATURAL RESOURCES (Updated excerpt from Jo Daviess Comprehensive Plan Baseline Data) The natural resources in Jo Daviess County are unique relative to the rest of the state and much of the mid-west because the county is part of the Wisconsin Driftless Region bypassed by continental glaciers of the Ice Age. This region covers parts of southern Minnesota and Wisconsin, Northwestern Illinois and Northeastern Iowa. Glaciated areas were leveled, strewn with glacial debris or "drift" and dotted with lakes and ponds. The driftless areas, on the other hand, have bedrock close to the surface into which deep valleys have been carved by millions of years of weather and erosion. In Jo Daviess County, streams are numerous and the only two lakes are man-made. The relief from the higher ridges to the valley floors is typically 300 feet or more creating a rugged and scenic landscape. Ecosystems can be found in this landscape that are older than those found in glaciated areas. Geology The topography of Jo Daviess County is characterized by rugged relief unique to most of Illinois. Our county, located in the far northwestern corner of the state, is in an area spared by the major glaciations of the last two million years. It is, accordingly, called the "Driftless Area" by geologists, the term "drift" referring to material deposited by glacial activity. The visible landscape that we see today began during the Paleozoic Era (570 to 245 million years ago) when shallow seas repeatedly inundated the interior of the continent. Shells of marine animals, along with muds, silts and sands from eroding highlands, were periodically deposited in those sea bottoms. -

Encounters with the Early Highpointers by Charles
SOME CLOSE (AND NOT SO CLOSE) ENCOUNTERS WITH THE EARLY HIGHPOINTERS BY CHARLES FERIS Many stories can be told of how we got our first inspiration to pursue this hobby of ours, this highpointing. We’ve been inspired in a hundred ways; mine arose during a period of boredom, while in college. Seeking something other than study, I took out a Rand McNally road atlas, and looked at a map of my native state of Illinois, noting the little red dot in the northwest corner of the state. Wow, something neat to do. So while the other kids were off to Florida, off to Charles Mound I went during spring break 1961. Then it hit me; I had already done Mt. Whitney the year before, so why not do all the states. Now I was really excited. The next few years saw me collecting 13 more highpoints in the Midwest and southeast. I went my merry way, never realizing that others might be crazy enough to be pursuing the very same project. At this point I was not aware of the tiny fraternity of early highpointers who were already years before me. I had no idea of the remarkable people I was about to meet. Then in August 1965 a Sierra Club friend of mine in Chicago told me about C. Rowland Stebbins. I had found a kindred soul, one who had already completed the 48. I phoned him immediately. Soon my wife and I were off on the four hour drive to Lansing, Michigan. We arrived to an expansive mansion on Moore’s River Drive atop a bluff overlooking the Grand River. -

SaddleBrooke Hiking Club Hike Database 11-15-2020 Hike Location Hike Rating Hike Name Hike Description AZ Trail B Arizona Trail: Alamo Canyon This passage begins at a point west of the White Canyon Wilderness on the Tonto (Passage 17) National Forest boundary about 0.6 miles due east of Ajax Peak. From here the trail heads west and north for about 1.5 miles, eventually dropping into a two- track road and drainage. Follow the drainage north for about 100 feet until it turns left (west) via the rocky drainage and follow this rocky two-track for approximately 150 feet. At this point there is new signage installed leading north (uphill) to a saddle. This is a newly constructed trail which passes through the saddle and leads downhill across a rugged and lush hillside, eventually arriving at FR4. After crossing FR4, the trail continues west and turns north as you work your way toward Picketpost Mountain. The trail will continue north and eventually wraps around to the west side of Picketpost and somewhat paralleling Alamo Canyon drainage until reaching the Picketpost Trailhead. Hike 13.6 miles; trailhead elevations 3471 feet south and 2399 feet north; net elevation change 1371 feet; accumulated gains 1214 northward and 2707 feet southward; RTD __ miles (dirt). AZ Trail A Arizona Trail: Babbitt Ranch This passage begins just east of the Cedar Ranch area where FR 417 and FR (Passage 35) 9008A intersect. From here the route follows a pipeline road north to the Tub Ranch Camp. The route continues towards the corrals (east of the buildings). -
