Abstract

Three species cilipes Meigen, Hercostomus plagiatus (Loew) and Medetera jacula (Fallén) are recorded for first time to the fauna of Greece and four other dolichopodids – Chrysotus suavis Loew known from North Aegean Islands, Sciapus flavicinctus (Loew), simplicipes Becker and Teuchophorus monacanthus Loew known from Crete are listed for the Greek mainland. The other two species (Rhaphium caliginosum (Zetterstedt) and pallipes (Fabricius)) known for the fauna of Greece are found in this survey and added in the faunistic list. Key words: Diptera, Dolichopodidae, Greece, new records, faunistic.

Introduction

The dolichopodid fauna of Greece has not been subject of special investigation but different authors have recorded species from this country. Several species of Dolichopodidae were described from its territory. Loew (1857) described Diaphorus lugubris Loew 1857 from Rhodos Island, Dodecanese and the same author (Loew, 1869) described Diaphorus lautus Loew 1869, Hercostomus apollo (Loew 1869), Neurigona nubifera (Loew 1869). Parent (1927, 1929 and 1937) discovered other three species from Greece – Dolichopus nimbatus Parent, 1927 from Thessaloniki, Sciapus spinosus Parent, 1929 and Diaphorus graecus Parent 1932. In his monograph Parent (1938) announced 8 species distributed in Greece. After that Negrobov (1991) listed other 26 species. Grichanov (2009) added other 12 species to the Greek fauna. Pollet (2011) in Fauna Europea database and Grichanov (2014) extended the number of known species for Greece up to 108.

Material and Methods

The species listed below are collected by sweep net from two localities in Northern Greece: Serres (close to the Monastery of Saint John the Forerunner, at the foot of the Mountain Menikion) and Lake Kerkini. The information for the localities is summarized in Table 1 and they are shown on Fig. 1. The studied localities are included in the European Ecological Network NATURA 2000. Parent (1938), Negrobov (1980), Negrobov, Maslova (1995), Negrobov et al. (2000, 2003), Grichanov (2007) were used for the identification of the species. For the species distribution was used literature by Pollet (2013) and Grichanov (2007, 2014). Faunistic list gives the following information: site of collecting, date, number and sex of specimens, name of collector and general distribution.

CONCLUSIONS

As a result of this study nine dolichopodid species were collected. Three of them (Chrysotus cilipes Meigen, Hercostomus plagiatus (Loew) and Medetera jacula (Fallén)) are new to the fauna of Greece and four other species (Chrysotus suavis Loew known from North Aegean Islands, Sciapus flavicinctus (Loew), Sympycnus simplicipes Becker and Teuchophorus monacanthus Loew known from Crete) are new for the Greek mainland. In more recently published literature (Pollet, 2013; Grichanov, 2014) about the distribution of the family Dolichopodidae in Palaearctic realm, the authors gave 108 species for the fauna of Greece. In different regions of Greece the number of the species is as follows: Greek mainland – 96, Crete – 25, North Aegean Islands – 20 and Dodecanese – 3 species. With these new data in the current paper the total number of known dolichopodids to the fauna of Greek mainland increases to 103 and for the entire Greek fauna – 111.
