Story and photos Dean Taylor

Pirongia Village has been a hive of activity recently, especially in Franklin Street. Contractors are currently working on a number of projects. Council has contractors completing safer cross- ing improvements between the main parking areas on the western side of the road and cafes and eateries on the opposite side. The improvements include crossing buffers, wider berms and better defined parking areas. Improvements to street lighting has also been taking place as well as the Government contract to bring fibre broadband to Pirongia later this year. Motorists and pedestrians are reminded to follow safety instructions and signs and for their own safety, and that of workers, to be patient and alert until the work is completed.

Today’s Snap Happy has a distinct rural theme. Ashley Lucas sent two images to show that not everyone gets away for the holiday season as there is always plenty to do on the farm — especially if you are ‘hands-on’. At left is local contractor Ray Shearer baling Ashley’s hay on New Year’s Day in the Ford Dexta 2000 he has owned since the 70s. And what better way to pick up the hay than to stick the trailer on the Remuera Tractor’ — aka a 2006 V8 Land Rover Discovery. Local couple Paul and Margaret Bull submitted this shot of their grandchildren Jack and Ryan, taken by mum Julieanne, of the boys enjoying a swim on the farm in their silage bale pool — Kiwi kids swimming pool Wharepu¯hanga farm style.

Te Awamutu Courier’s Snap Happy page is a chance to see how local people enjoy their holidays—from the beaches, streams and rivers to the fields, hills and mountains. Please make sure the photo is as large as possible (size/resolution), it is clear and includes caption details and contacts. You need to tell us who took the photo, where it is and who is featured (name, age etc). Don't forget to tell us what is special about the scene/moment/person you have captured. Send your digital photos and accompanying details to: dean.taylor@nzme or drop a print into the Te Awamutu Courier office (97 Sloane Street).
