LSU TIGERS FOOTBALL NEWS LSU Tigers (0-0) vs. Western Carolina (0-0) LSU OPENS STADIUM EXPANSION, SABAN ERA AGAINST WESTERN CAROLINA The LSU Fighting Tigers raise the curtain on their 107th season, and first under new head coach , this Saturday against Western Carolina in Tiger Stadium. The game will be the first for LSU in the newly expanded Tiger Stadium after 11,600 seats were added, bringing the seating capacity to 91,600, making it the fourth largest on-campus facility in the nation. LSU is coming off a 3-8 season punctuated by a 35-10 victory over eventual champion . Western Carolina, members of the Southern Conference, posted an identical 3-8 record in 1999. The game is the season opener for both teams.

TIGERS LOOK TO OPEN SEASON WITH A WIN FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT YEAR The Tigers will be looking to take their fifth consecutive opening day victory on Saturday vs. Western Carolina. The Tigers began the streak with a 35-34 victory over Houston in 1996, and followed that with victories over Texas-El Paso (1997), Arkansas State (1998) and San Jose State (1999). With a victory the Tigers would have their longest stretch of season opening victories since they won eight straight openers from 1962-69. LSU returns 17 starters from last year’s squad (9 offense, 8 defense). Offensively, Jerel Myers returns for his sophomore season after finishing second in the SEC in receptions per game in 1999. Defensively, FS Ryan Clark ranked among league leaders in tackles (110 in 1999), while sophomore LBs Trev Faulk and Bradie James are both on the Butkus Award "Watch List" heading into the year.
