It comes with our compliments and we trust that you will get much pleasure from browsing its pages. It has always been well known that Heine was one of the main influences on A.E. Housman’s poetry, but there has been surprisingly little written on this subject, so Jeremy Bourne’s book, which he has been working on for a long time, is doubly welcome. By placing a selection of Heine’s best-known poems alongside those of Housman which have a similar connection or theme, he proves the rationale of the book very clearly. The translations, specially created by our member Professor Gaston Hall, are remarkable in that they echo so well the metre, rhyme, and emotional content of Heine’s poems. The original German, the translation, and a selected Housman poem follow each other and the book is liberally illustrated by Robin Shaw’s evocative drawings. There are also chapters by Linda Hart, Professor Henry Woudhuysen and Jeremy Bourne himself which explain the historical background, and in particular the likelihood that Housman would have known and loved German verse from a very early age. The book contains a brief chronology for each poet, as well as a select bibliography and an index. Shortly after the last Journal had gone to print our prestigious event in Poets House in New York took place and it was good that a number of members from the other side of the Atlantic attended as well as committee members Robin and Kate Shaw who had done all the liaising to bring it about. Thanks of course go to them as well as Christopher Ricks and Archie Burnett who dazzled the audience with their respective talks. Last year’s Schools Poetry Reading Competition expanded to include Bromsgrove’s Middle schools (covering the ages of 8 to 13 in the Bromsgrove area) and, although entrants from only four schools materialised on the day, it was a start on which we hope to build this year. In the Sixth Form category the some readers reached an excellent standard and it was very good to be able to present the Housman Cup to the best overall winner. The cup (a replica of the wine cooler the students of UCL gave to A.E.H. in 1911), which was given by Raymond Grove’s family in his memory in 1999, has languished unawarded since the demise of the Society’s Poetry Competition some ten years ago but this year it has pride of place in North Bromsgrove High School’s Trophy case. Our Annual General Meetings are held in the Chairman’s House so tend to be friendly affairs but that does not stop some members asking testing 4 HSJ11Final.p65 4 11/21/2011, 12:18 AM questions of the Treasurer. However he is so on top of the accounts that nothing phases him and his achievement in completing the year’s accounts in time for them to be sent out before the AGM is impressive. Last year saw an increase in the Society’s net worth of £1,300, a sum which will be of value in helping pay for the ambitious future plans of the committee. The first big expense will be the Housman and Heine book which was always going to have a very limited sale; yet we felt that it was one that all members should have the opportunity of reading so are giving it as a Christmas present. Other expenses will include a subsidy for next October’s Society weekend, a reprint of Three Bromsgrove Poets and of course our sponsorship of the Hay Name and Nature of Poetry lecture. We also hope to sponsor an event at the exciting new Much Wenlock Poetry Festival, which, being in the heart of ‘Housman Country’, deserves our support. We have also just had the capital outlay of reprinting some of our greetings cards as well as producing two new ones. These I am glad to say are selling well and contribute significantly to the Society’s income. The Commemoration of Housman’s birthday in Bromsgrove has become quite an established local occasion and, with our new Member of Parliament being the guest of the day, there seemed to be more councillors present than usual. After retiring for a buffet lunch in the Council Chamber the event concluded with the winner of our Schools Poetry Reading Competition, Daniel Edwards from North Bromsgrove High School, reciting the two poems with which he won the competition in November. His Housman poem was Grenadier, Number V from Last Poems, was followed by Nothing by the “performance poet” John Cooper Clarke - who first became famous during the punk rock era of the late 1970s. The story has been well told in the Newsletter of the Marlborough Edition of A Shropshire Lad but it was very good to have the opportunity of hearing at the Ludlow Commemoration Paul Griffin’s account of how the edition of 2009 (limited to ten copies) came into being. We also heard his story of how he wrote as a 16 year-old to the 87 year-old Laurence Housman with a request to write a preface to the edition and received a reply which said that he was “sufficiently interested and pleased by your proposal to print a special edition of A Shropshire Lad with fine paper and binding, to earn a copy by writing at your request the enclosed preface”. It is hard to believe that our sponsored lecture at Hay on The Name and Nature of Poetry at the Hay Festival of Literature was the thirteenth in the series. 5 HSJ11Final.p65 5 11/21/2011, 12:18 AM Our 2011 lecturer was Ruth Padel, the latest in a long line of distinguished speakers, and her interpretation must have been one of the best, for throughout she used A.E.H.’s original lecture as a basis for her own, which made it especially relevant to the occasion. There was another excellent attendance and members will certainly enjoy reading it later in these pages. I do hope that the majority of members heard the Radio Four documentary about A.E. Housman which was broadcast on 1st September, for it seemed to me to be an exceptionally good one. Its origins were interesting in that in a previous programme the presenter was making he was so surprised to find the number of young poets who had all cited Housman as a primary influence, that he decided to make a programme solely devoted to the author of A Shropshire Lad. I am hoping to make a CD available for private circulation but have not yet reached agreement on how best to do this. For some while now we have been concerned in the committee about planning for succession, particularly as the member base in Bromsgrove is surprisingly weak and there is a shortage of obvious replacements for key officers and committee members (especially the Chairman!) in the Society when they reach an age when they feel they are no longer able to carry out their duties.

    SHROPSHIRE REVISITED Theodora and Alfred Kroeber, 1959 Our century continues to be much occupied with death, and our creative energies to expend themselves on one aspect or another of death, whether in the waging of war, the invention of implements and devices of war, or in pol- itical and social thinking, or in the plastic arts and literature. Poets are said to speak prophetically. This could mean that, some time before the first World Wiar, their poems had begun to emphasize death over life. Poe, Emily Dickinson, Swinburne, Housman, Kipling, Yeats, and Eliot do indeed use the words death, dead, die, dying, significantly more often than the words life, alive, live, living, and Housman, at the seeming apex of this twentieth- century death-directed interest, is discovered to have employed seventy-one per cent of death words to twenty-nine per cent of life words.1 Since Housman Vrote A Shro shire Lad there has been a world war, and since he published his Last Poems there have been the vertiginous twenties, a depression, and a second World ibr, with their presently complex aftermaths. Reviewing the poetry of the past half-century or so, a style profile, however tentative and incomplete, begins to emerge. We--the English and the Americans--faced what followed on Sarajevo with the bravado and despair of the lads of Housman's balladlike and simple poetry. We volunteered for glory and friendship and death. Never since our immersion in that first world war have values been for us as clear-cut as they were before. It is Housman who gives those lost values their perfect and limited, if astringently negative, voice.

    Hughley, Easthope and Shipton Our visit was inspired by A.E. Housman's poem 'A Shropshire Lad' was spent exploring the churches of Wenlock Team Ministry. Actually, as far as I'm aware, only one church, Hughley, is mentioned by Housman, but it served as a good starting point for discovering the churches in the surrounding area. Within the Team MInistry there are two discrete geographical groupings, one cluster lying north on the road from Wenlock to Shrewsbury, and the other on the road leading south west from Wenlock in the direction of Craven Arms and Church Stretton. St John the Baptist, Hughley The vane on Hughley 'steeple' - in fact it's a half timbered bell tower. Our first church, Hughley, lies north of the Stretton Road (B4371). Its main claim to fame is the mention in A.E. Housman's poem 'A Shropshire Lad' (see below). It's likely that Housman merely picked the name off a map, because it's said that when he wrote the poem he had never actually visited Shropshire, being in fact born in Worcestershire. Indeed, there is no steeple there, and never has been at Hughley, although there is a half- timbered bell tower, albeit with a vane: The Vane on Hughley steeple, Veers bright, a far-known sign, And there lie Hughley people, And there lie friends of mine...     Cultural History of the Lunar and Solar Eclipse in the Early Roman Empire Richard C. Carrier The regularity and consistency of human imagination may be first displayed in the beliefs connected with eclipses. It is well known that these phenomena, to us now crucial instances of the exactness of natural laws, are, throughout the lower stages of civilization, the very embodiment of miraculous disaster.1 Fifteen hundred years have not yet passed since Greece numbered and named the stars and yet many nations today only know the heavens by their appearance, and do not yet understand why the moon fails or how it is overshadowed.2 More than fifteen hundred years separates these two remarks. Each reveals a gulf between the learned and unlearned, but for Tylor it is a contrast between today and long ago, or here and far away, while for Seneca it is a contrast between the wise and the vulgar, who live in the same time and place. For the lunar and solar eclipse is a phenomenon where the strongest and clearest divide appears between the educated Roman and the common multitude. In contrast with almost everything else in Roman experience, from earthquakes to disease, eclipses of sun and moon can be understood in their entirety, and explained with mathematical precision, without the aid of advanced technology or modern scientific methods. But to those who lacked the encouragement to employ careful observation and physical explanation, and who lacked the breadth of information available to the literate, the eclipse was the most awesome and dire event in human experience.

Published in 1896, the 63 poems in A Shropshire Lad reflect a variety of and resources for Music Teacher different themes (including the simple pleasures of rural life and a longing for lost innocence). They are written magazine, exam in different voices, including conversations from beyond the grave. As well as Vaughan Williams’s settings of boards and other six of these poems, other composers to set extracts from A Shropshire Lad include George Butterworth, Arthur music education publishers.     172 CENSURAE LIBRORUM to Aensidemus, and the reason is that they did not recognize that the epistemological use of com- mon reason has much more affinity with the Pyrrhonian philosophy. The last paper deals with the philosophical school which did not have its representative among the Greek philosophers who visited Rome in 155 BC, the Epicureanism. V. Tsouna presents the figure of Philodemus, an Epicurean philosopher whose library and scrolls were saved by the ashes of the Mount Vesuvius. At the centre of her attention is Philodemus’ ethics and moral psychology. The traditional view on the Epicurean philosophy is that it did not change during the existence of the school, but V. Tsouna shows the development of the Epicurean thought. In her essay, she places Philodemus in the frame of this development. Philodemus accepted Epicurus’ thesis that the mind is able to limit the body in the field of morality, but he perceived also the existence of some reac- tions in the body which cannot and should not be moved away. What is also important in the field of morality is that emotions and beliefs fulfil the predominant role in their generation according to Philodemus. Their specific kinds are called “bites” (δηγμός) and “pangs” (νυγμός). The paper is closed by the analysis of Philodemus’ method and its epistemological foundation. The entire book should be assessed very highly. The views defended in it are well-supported by accurate readings of the texts as well as by sound arguments. ABSTRACT Roger Quilter is best known for his elegant and refined songs, which are rooted in late Victorian parlour-song, and are staples of the English artsong repertoire. This thesis has two aims: to explore his output beyond the canon of about twenty-five songs which overshadows the rest of his work; and to counter an often disparaging view of his music, arising from his refusal to work in large-scale forms, the polished assurance of his work, and his education other than in an English musical establishment. These aims are achieved by presenting biographical material, which places him in his social and musical context as a wealthy, upper-class, Edwardian gentleman composer, followed by an examination of his music. Various aspects of his solo and partsong œuvre are considered; his incidental music for the play Where the Rainbow Ends and its contribution to the play’s West End success are examined fully; a chapter on his light opera sheds light on his collaborative working practices, and traces the development of the several versions of the work; and his piano, instrumental and orchestral works are discussed within their function as light music.
