We report upon the amphibians collected during seven expeditions carried out between the years 2000–2006 to thirteen localities in both Refugio de Vida Silvestre Río San Juan and Reserva Biológica Indio-Maíz, southeastern Nicaragua. We include morphometric data of around one-half of the adult specimens in the collection, and provide a brief general overview and discuss zoogeographic and conservation considerations of the amphibians known to occur in the Río San Juan area. The individual was observed and collected in a primary evergreen submontane forest in Cerro Pirre, Darien Province, Republic of Panama. It was identified mainly by the low counts of secondary and primary folds. The encounter of this individual of C. guntheri highlights the disjunct populations and apparently the results of dispersion of this species from South to Central America by biotic exchange as result of the closure of the Isthmus of Panama. Thursday, 22 January 2009 A billion frogs on world's plates How amphibians are harvested around the world Up to one billion frogs are taken from the wild for human consumption each year, according to a new study. Researchers arrived at this conclusion by analysing UN trade data, although they acknowledge there is a lot of uncertainty in the figure. France and the US are the two biggest importers, with significant consumption in several East Asian nations. About one-third of all amphibians are listed as threatened species, with habitat loss the biggest factor. But hunting is acknowledged as another important driver for some species, along with climate change, pollution and disease - notably the fungal condition chytridiomycosis which has brought rapid extinctions to some amphibians. Absence of essential data to monitor and manage the wild harvest is a large concern Professor Corey Bradshaw The new research, to be published in a forthcoming edition of the journal Conservation Biology, suggests that the global trade in wild frogs has been underestimated in the past. "Frogs legs are on the menu at school cafeterias in Europe, market stalls and dinner tables across Asia to high end restaurants throughout the world," said Corey Bradshaw from Adelaide University in Australia. "Amphibians are already the most threatened animal group yet assessed because of disease, habitat loss and climate change - man's massive appetite for their legs is not helping." Amphibians are farmed for food in some countries but these animals are not included in the new analysis. Exporting extinction Indonesia emerged from Professor Bradshaw's analysis as both the largest exporter of frogs - 5,000 tonnes per year - and a major consumer. -

Abstract: Anuran assemblages from the Eocene and Oligocene of the Phosphorites du Quercy (southwestern France) are documented by a modest number of isolated bones, incomplete skulls, and some ‘mummies’. However, at the family level, the diversity is not significantly lower than in coeval frog assemblages from other regions. By contrast, a larger number of amniote specimens and taxa are known from the Phosphorites. The sparse anuran record within the Phosphorites most likely results from the karstic environment in which the fossiliferous sites formed. Such an environment is not favorable for animals dependent on water and moisture. Upper middle and upper Eocene localities in the Phosphorites produced Alytidae, Pelobatidae, Pelodytidae and ranoids. The presence of bufonids or microhylids, and rhacophorids cannot be definitely rejected, and potentially distinctive, but unidentifiable taxa also may be present. The occurrence of Pelodytidae in the Eocene of Europe is confirmed by diagnostic bones from the Phosphorites. In Oligocene localities in the Phosphorites, anurans are even less diverse, with only Alytidae, Pelobatidae and ranoids having been recovered. -

GENERAL INFORMATION Purpose of 5-year Reviews: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is required by section 4(c)(2) of the Endangered Species Act (Act) to conduct a status review of each listed species at least once every 5 years. The purpose of a 5-year review is to evaluate whether or not the species’ status has changed since it was listed (or since the most recent 5-year review). Based on the 5-year review, we recommend whether the species should be removed from the list of endangered and threatened species, be changed in status from endangered to threatened, or be changed in status from threatened to endangered. Our original listing of a species as endangered or threatened is based on the existence of threats attributable to one or more of the five threat factors described in section 4(a)(1) of the Act, and we must consider these same five factors in any subsequent consideration of reclassification or delisting of a species. In the 5-year review, we consider the best available scientific and commercial data on the species, and focus on new information available since the species was listed or last reviewed. -

Manicom i Abstract We need to understand the mechanism by which species interact in food webs to predict how natural ecosystems will respond to disturbances that affect species abundance, such as the loss of top predators. The study of predator-prey interactions and trophic cascades has a long tradition in ecology, and classical views have focused on the importance of lethal predator effects on prey populations (direct effects on density), and the indirect transmission of effects that may cascade through the system (density-mediated indirect interactions). However, trophic cascades can also occur without changes in the density of interacting species, due to non-lethal predator effects on prey traits, such as behaviour (trait-mediated indirect interactions). Studies of direct and indirect predation effects have traditionally considered predator control of herbivore populations; however, top predators may also control smaller predators. -
Ecological Functions of Neotropical Amphibians and Reptiles: a Review

Nevertheless, little is known about their role in maintaining and regulating ecosystem functions and, by extension, their potential value for supporting ecosystem services. Here, we review research on the ecological functions of Neotropical herps, in different sources (the bibliographic databases, book chapters, etc.). A total of 167 Neotropical herpetology studies published over the last four decades (1970 to 2014) were reviewed, providing information on more than 100 species that contribute to at least five categories of ecological functions: i) nutrient cycling; ii) bioturbation; iii) pollination; iv) seed dispersal, and; v) energy flow through ecosystems. We emphasize the need to expand the knowledge about ecological functions in Neotropical ecosystems and the mechanisms behind these, through the study of functional traits and analysis of ecological processes. Many of these functions provide key ecosystem services, such as biological pest control, seed dispersal and water quality. By knowing and understanding the functions that perform the herps in ecosystems, management plans for cultural landscapes, restoration or recovery projects of landscapes that involve aquatic and terrestrial systems, development of comprehensive plans and detailed conservation of species and ecosystems may be structured in a more appropriate way. Besides information gaps identified in this review, this contribution explores these issues in terms of better understanding of key questions in the study of ecosystem services and biodiversity and, also, of how these services are generated. -

SITES JR.* *Department of Biology and Bean Life Science Museum, Brigham Young University, Provo, UT 84602, USA, †Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of California, Santa Cruz, CA 95064, USA Abstract Lizards have been model organisms for ecological and evolutionary studies from individual to community levels at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Here we highlight lizards as models for phylogeographic studies, review the published popula- tion genetics ⁄ phylogeography literature to summarize general patterns and trends and describe some studies that have contributed to conceptual advances. Our review includes 426 references and 452 case studies: this literature reflects a general trend of exponential growth associated with the theoretical and empirical expansions of the discipline. We describe recent lizard studies that have contributed to advances in understanding of several aspects of phylogeography, emphasize some linkages between phylogeography and speciation and suggest ways to expand phylogeographic studies to test alternative pattern-based modes of speciation. Allopatric speciation patterns can be tested by phylogeographic approaches if these are designed to discriminate among four alterna- tives based on the role of selection in driving divergence between populations, including: (i) passive divergence by genetic drift; (ii) adaptive divergence by natural selection (niche conservatism or ecological speciation); and (iii) socially-mediated speciation. Here we propose an expanded approach to compare patterns of variation in phylogeographic data sets that, when coupled with morphological and environmental data, can be used to discriminate among these alternative speciation patterns.
