PROFESSIONAL LEARNING and RESEARCH PARTNERSHIPS

The Premier’s Sporting Challenge has continued to provide high quality professional learning for teachers across the state. The broad range of courses provided supports teachers, sports organisers and school leaders to plan and initiate more opportunities to get students active in a safe and inclusive environment.

All five courses in the Building Skills as a Sport Organiser series have been converted and are now available in a new online format. The enhanced interactive features make learning more engaging and easily accessible. All sports organisers, regardless of location, can easily access these self-directed modules to enhance the skills that are most relevant to them.

Existing partnerships with research teams has continued and expanded during 2018. These partnerships are ellaborated on below.

A new partnership was formed with Health4Life, a program focused on promoting physical and mental health among adolescents by addressing six key behaviours (alcohol use, screen time, sleep, physical activity, eating and smoking). This is being conducted by the Matilda Centre of Research Excellence in Mental Health and Substance Use at the University of Sydney.

Physical Activity for Everyone (PA4E1) has completed it’s first year of implementation. The program includes 24 intervention schools and 25 control schools from the Hunter, North Coast, Central Coast and South West Sydney areas. The preliminary results indicate positive impacts on students physical activity levels with the full first year results expected in early 2019.

11 Annual Report

The schools participating in the PA4E1 trial have been encouraged to participate in the Resistance Training for Teens (Rt4T) workshops. This has been one of the most successful elements of the PA4E1 program. The majority of schools in the control group have completed the Rt4T training through the School Sport Unit and now have resistance training programs running in their school. In 2018, six Resistance Training for Teens workshops were delivered, with 84 teachers attending from 52 schools.

The very popular Thinking While Moving in Mathematics professional learning course has continued to see high levels of participation with eight courses conducted across the state involving 164 teachers in 2018.

A new Thinking While Moving in English course has been developed by Dr Nick Riley from the University of Newcastle. The impact of this course was studied in a randomised controlled trial involving 238 students. The results of the trial indicated significant improvements in on-task behaviour, grammar and punctuation, with physical activity level data still to be analysed. This workshop will be available to teachers in 2019. They will be trained to advocate for movement based learning in primary school English lessons and given the skills and competence to achieve this.

Burn to Learn is a four-year study aiming to develop, implement, evaluate and disseminate a school-based program focused on promoting cognitively demanding physical activity among senior school students. In 2018, 10 schools involving 380 students participated in the first phase of a randomised controlled trial. The preliminary results have indicated improvements in students’ cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular fitness and psychological wellbeing.

The iPLAY program is now active in 134 DoE primary schools, and in 2019 will involve 37,382 students and 2,031 teachers. Teachers are provided professional learning on classroom based practices to increase physical activity levels through high quality physical education, physically active homework and the use of energiser breaks. School leaders aim to change school based practice by increasing community links, engaging with parents and increasing active time in the playground.
