Regan won the gold in 2014 and silver in 2015 but at this year’s district meet she À nished third and had to hope for a state ticket as an additional qualiÀ er. The top two fastest non-automatic qualifying times after comparing all times from the eleven ‘D’ districts would get slots at state. Three girls, one of them Miller, had third place times of 12.8 at their district meets but, with only two spots available at state, the NSAA decided to not include any of the three. Emily Bergstrom of Wilcox- Hildreth ran in the ‘D’ 3200 for the third year in a row. Her time (13:15.8) and her placing (17th) were very similar to those of her previous two trips to state. She ran the last two laps of the eight-lap race very strongly to improve her À nal placing by six positions.

The Minden Whippets golf team concluded its 2016 spring season on May 17 competing in the Class C-4 district golf meet held in Cairo at Centura Hills Golf Course. The Whippets were unable to qualify a team or any individuals for the 2016 Class C State Golf meet in Kearney. Minden À nished the district in sixth place as a team scoring a 369. Grand Island Central Catholic won the C-4 district with a team low score of 312 followed by Ord at 331 and Sutton 341. St. Cecilia was fourth at 357 followed by Centura with a 365. Junior Jake Kuehn paced the Whippet golfers at district as he has most of the season. Kuehn came up four shots from qualifying for state ending his day with an 18-hole score of 87. Kuehn shot rounds of 43 and 44. Junior Thomas Miller followed Kuehn turning in a scorecard of 93. Miller had rounds of 48 and 45. Sophomore Ethan Hanson was a stroke behind Miller carding a 94 with rounds of 50 and 44. Riley Ratka was next for the Whippets as the senior À nished off his À nal meet as a Minden player turning in a 95. Ratka À red rounds of 48 and 47. Sophomore Grant Edgecombe completed the varsity team for the Dawgs shooting a score of 100 with rounds of 51 and 49. As a team, we played pretty well and was pleased with their focus and effort,” stated Minden Head Coach Eric Christensen. “I feel for Jake because he didn’t À nish the way he would have liked. He had three or four holes the ball didn’t bounce his way and that’s golf. Sometimes you get good breaks and sometimes you don’t.” “On the other hand Riley, Thomas, Ethan, and Grant À nished their seasons about as well as can be expected. Ethan À nished with a personal best and was striking the ball really well. He is starting to gain some conÀ dence with his swing and that’s good to see. Grant really came back after a rough couple of meets. It was great to see him compete and play more to his potential.” “Thomas also hit the ball really well. He gave up some strokes around the green, but overall I liked the way he À nished. Riley had a solid day. It was nice to see him À nish his career with a respect- able round. I enjoyed coaching him and he will be missed.” “I would like to thank all of the players I have coached in the past 18 years. I have some great memories and I will never forget the relationships I have developed with these young men. I would also like to thank the community of Minden for their support of the high school golf programs.
