Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

    Drug Facts Week Message Timely with Death of Amy Winehouse Details Created on Friday, 23 December 2011 11:52 Amy Winehouse, the former Grammy award-winning artist who had a very public battle with substance use disorder and her use of several illicit and licit substances, died in July of this year. Last week, however, the long awaited cause of Amy Winehouse's death was disclosed at a coroner's court in London. The findings show that Amy had died from her use of alcohol, not from the illicit substances which were the focus of much media attention. Her tragic and unfortunate loss serves to educate us that there is no "safe drug". Every time someone takes an addictive substance whether it be alcohol or cocaine, tobacco or ecstasy, there are significant risks that need to be understood. Unfortunately, our society has focused its attention in regards to the dangers of addiction according to cultural misperceptions. This non-scientific view has allowed for the de- sensitization of the real dangers of legal drugs such as alcohol and tobacco, or prescription drugs which as a result of being improperly used is resulting in an alarming rise in the use of opiates. Seeking to spread the message that all drugs carry risks and are harmful to the body, President Obama's Administration for the second year in a row is holding "Drug Facts Week" from October 31st through November 6th. The weeklong event will seek to connect teens with scientifically proven facts about drugs and substance use disorder. Last year's successful Drug Facts Week saw over 100 community events and discussions between teens and scientists.

For more than a decade, SiriusXM has invited its subscribers to exclusive concerts headlined by some of the most important names in music playing at legendary venues; Pearl Jam will perform at Harlem's world-famous Apollo Theater in a special invitation-only concert for SiriusXM subscribers and Pandora listeners March 26. SiriusXM programmers have now curated the exclusive concert series to create a limited-time channel for a national audience. SiriusXM's Superstar Concert Series channel will air one special concert, all day, on their respective broadcast date on channel 30. We propose a cross-modal approach based on separate au- dio and image data-sets to identify the artist of a given music video. The identification process is based on an ensemble of two separate clas- sifiers. Audio content classification is based on audio features derived from the Million Song Dataset (MSD). Face recognition is based on Lo- cal Binary Patterns (LBP) using a training-set of artist portrait images. The two modalities are combined using bootstrap aggregation (Bagging). Different versions of classifiers for each modality are generated from sub- samples of their according training-data-sets. Predictions upon the final artist labels are based on weighted majority voting. We show that the visual information provided by music videos improves the precision of music artist identification tasks. 1 Introduction To demonstrate the opportunities of a Music Video Information Retrieval ap- proach, we address the problem of music artist identification - the task of iden- tifying the performing musician of a given track. Music Video Information Re- trieval (MVIR) constitutes a cross-modal approach to Music Information Re- trieval (MIR) problems. Music videos like their underlying audio recordings are pieces of art and are used to accompany or augment the musical track. The visual part adds a second semantic layer to the song which may correlate with the other layers or contradict.
