Walt De Vries, we are so pleased to have tracked you down here to North Carolina where you have achieved a career in politics and government more than equal to what you accomplished in the first half of your life in Michigan, and that's saying a lot. Walt De Vries: Thanks, Bill. I'm glad you could make it down to North Carolina which is my second home, and I hope you enjoy it while you're here. Bill Ballenger: I'm loving it so far. Let's go back to the 1950's and Walt De Vries is an up and coming professor at times but didn't you have some experience in the state capitol in Lansing during the 50's? How did that happen? Walt De Vries: Well that happened because I had a fellowship at Michigan State and it gave me a chance to work for a politician or a governmental official as part of the fellowship. So I was assigned to Speaker of the House George Van Person, because my Dutch name and his Dutch name, and that's the only reason I ended up working part-time as the assistant to the speaker of the house.

    The Teachings of Church Leaders Regarding the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ: 1852–2018 John Hilton III, Emily K. Hyde, and McKenna Grace Trussel rom the beginnings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day FSaints (herein referred to as “the Church”), the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ has been at the heart of its theology. In numerous revelations received by Joseph Smith, the Savior is identified as having been “cru- cified for the sins of the world” (D&C 53:2; see also 21:9, 35:2, 46:13, 54:1, 76:41). President Brigham Young taught that salvation was only “through the name and ministry of Jesus Christ, and the atonement he made on Mount Calvary.”1 President John Taylor said that Christ “was crucified and put to death to atone for the sins of the world.”2 President Wilford Woodruff stated, “The Lord Jesus was crucified on Mount Cal- vary for the sins of the world.”3 And President Lorenzo Snow taught that Christ “sacrificed his life on Mount Calvary for the salvation of the human family.”4 In 1918, President Joseph F. Smith wrote “that redemp- tion had been wrought through the sacrifice of the Son of God upon the cross” (D&C 138:35), and in 1941, President Heber J. Grant testified that Christ “came to this earth with a divine mission to die upon the cross as the Redeemer of mankind, atoning for the sins of the world.”5 In brief, 1.     An Archaeology of Walls in the Walking Dead

    Undead Divides: An Archaeology of Walls in The Walking Dead Howard Williams In 2010, the zombie horror genre gained even greater popularity than the huge following it had previously enjoyed when AMC’s The Walking Dead (TWD) first aired. The chapter surveys the archaeology of this fictional post-apocalyptic material world in the show’s seasons 1–9, focusing on its mural practices and environments which draw upon ancient, biblical, medieval and colonial motifs. The study identifies the moralities and socialities of wall-building, dividing not only survivors aspiring to re-found civilization from the wilderness and manifesting the distinctive identities of each mural community, but also distinguishing the living from the undead. The roles of the dead and the undead in mural iterations are also explored. As such, dimensions of past and present wall-building practices are reflected and inverted in this fictional world. As part of a broader ‘archaeology of The Walking Dead’, the chapter identifies the potentials of exploring the show’s physical barriers within the context of the public archaeology of frontiers and borderlands. Andrea: What’s your secret? The Governor: Really big walls. Andrea: That soldier had walls too and we all know how that turned out, so. The Governor: I guess we do. The real secret is what goes on within these walls. It’s about getting back to who we were, who we really are, not just waiting to be saved. You know people here have homes, medical care, kids go to school. Adults have jobs to do. It’s a sense of purpose.

Elders Wilford Woodruff and Henry Brown (Elder Woodruff was not yet an Apostle) arrived as missionaries near present day Bentonville on 28 January 1835. There were very few residents in Arkansas at that time and some in northern Arkansas had moved there from Jackson County Missouri. They held their first meeting four days later and preached to an attentive congregation. Later they were confronted by an apostate member, Alexander Akeman who lived beside Petit Jean River. Akeman was a man who earlier endured severe persecution with his sons in Missouri, but later turned bitterly against the Church. However, Akeman died suddenly “as though struck by a thunderbolt from heaven” while following Elder Woodruff from Akeman’s house. Elder Woodruff preached his funeral sermon. This event, along with Woodruff's teachings led to the baptism of a Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Hubbel, the first converts in Arkansas, on 22 February 1835. Elder Woodruff stated that he was aware of many mobbers who faced a sudden death.
