A very good copy. With the booklabel of John Jordan (no.8).

8. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. A Novel. Woodcut frontispiece of Willoughby raising from the ground in the company of a large dog. 8vo. [188 x 122 x 25 mm]. 379, [1], [4] pp. Bound in publisher's original light grey cloth, the front cover blocked in brown, the spine in brown and gold, the rear cover with blind rules, plain endleaves and edges. (A little rubbed and a few minor marks). [ebc7174] London: [printed by Woodfall & Kinder for] George Routledge and Sons, Broadway, Ludgate Hill; New York: 9 Lafayette Place, [1883] £175

Gilson E60. With the same imprint as Gilson’s edition and Woodfall & Kinder's address is given as Milford Lane, Strand, London, W.C. The advertisements are as listed, beginning with "'s Novels. An entirely New Edition, handsomely printed in crown 8vo". The binding appears to be the same as copies found at New College, Oxford and the Widener Library, at Harvard.

A very good copy, with the ink signature of Emily M. Foster, dated 1883, which is evidence of this being an early issue.

9. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. A Novel. Woodcut frontispiece of Willoughby raising Marianne Dashwood from the ground in the company of a large dog. 8vo. [189 x 120 x 24 mm]. 379pp. Bound in publisher's original green cloth, covers and spine blocked in brown, with a gilt block on the front and gilt lettering on the spine, black glazed endleaves, plain edges. Gilson E60. With the same imprint as Gilson's edition of 1883 and Woodfall and Kinder's address is given as Milford Lane, Strand, London, W.C. However, there are no advertisements and it is not in the stated binding of paper boards printed in red, blue and black reproducing the scene from the frontispiece, nor in the two variants noted. 10. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. A Novel. Woodcut frontispiece of Willoughby raising Marianne Dashwood from the ground in the company of a large dog. 8vo. [190 x 123 x 25 mm]. 379, [1, [4] pp. Bound in publisher's original plum coloured cloth, the front cover and spine lettered in gilt, brown decorated endleaves with "GRS" monogram, plain edges. (Headcaps and corners a little bumped). [ebc7170] London: [printed by Woodfall & Kinder for] George Routledge and Sons, Limited, Broadway, Ludgate Hill, Glasgow, Manchester, and New York [c. 1890] £150

Gilson E60 refers to a copy at St. Peter's College, Oxford, with the same imprint and the address of Woodfall & Kinder given as 70 to 76, Long Acre, London W.C., as here. He suggests it may be a later issue of the 1883 edition. The St. Peter's copy is in dark blue cloth, and has advertisements for the "Florin Edition" in red cloth. We are in plum or red cloth and have four pages of advertisements for "Every Boy's Library", "Ruby Series", "Juvenile Books" and "The Pansy Books".

A good copy, with the ink signature of E. J. Smith.

11. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. A Novel. 8vo. [190 x 123 x 24 mm]. 379, [1], [4]pp. Bound in publisher's original plum coloured cloth, the front cover lettered in gilt, the spine lettered and blocked in gilt, brown decorated endleaves with “GRS” monogram, top edge gilt. [ebc7172] London: [printed by Woodfall & Kinder for] George Routledge and Sons, Limited, Broadway, Ludgate Hill, Manchester and New York, [c. 1883] £175

Yet another issue of Gilson E60, again with Woodfall & Kinder's address as 70 to 76 Long Acre, but without mention of Glasgow in the imprint or a frontispiece. The advertisements are for "Novels, 250 Volumes. Two Shillings Each". The endleaves and the lettering blocks are the same as item 10 but decorative elements have been added to the spine and the top edge is gilt.

A very good copy. Booklabel of John Jordan (no.45).

12. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. A Novel. Woodcut frontispiece of Willoughby raising Marianne Dashwood from the ground in the company of a large dog. 8vo. [193 x 130 x 25 mm]. 379, [1], [2] pp. Bound in publisher's original quarter red cloth, black cloth spine lettered in gilt, floral decorated endleaves, top edge gilt. (Headcaps and corners slightly rubbed). [ebc7171] London: [printed by Woodfall & Kinder for] George Routledge and Sons, Broadway, Ludgate Hill, Glasgow, Manchester, and New York [c. 1883] £150

Gilson E60. Woodfall & Kinder's address is given as 70 to 76 Long Acre, and the imprint adds "Glasgow, Manchester, and New York". However, Routledge is no longer "Limited" and the two pages of advertisement begin with the "Florin Edition" of Jane Austen's Novels. The binding is undescribed by Gilson, and has the addition of gilding to the top edge.

A very good copy. Booklabel of John Jordan (no.742).

13. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. A Novel. 8vo. [189 x 125 x 17 mm]. 379, [1], [4] pp. Bound in publisher's original blue cloth, the front cover and spine blocked in black, yellow and red, the rear cover with a blind motif, printed advertisements on endleaves, plain endleaves. (Slightly rubbed). [ebc7175] London: George Routledge and Sons, Limited, Broadway, Ludgate Hill, Glasgow, Manchester, and New York, [c.1883] £200

The front cover states this to be from "The Ruby Series" and Gilson E41 dates this series to 1875-77. He had never seen a copy, but it is the same setting as Gilson E60, which is dated to 1883, with later reissues. It is on thinner paper than the other five copies above. Woodfall & Kinders address is given as 70 to 76 Long Acre and the advertisements at the end are for "Every Boy's Library". "Ruby Series", "Juvenile Books" and "The Pansy Books".

A very good copy, with the original bookseller's label of "Davies & Son, Stationers, Gloucester".

14. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. A Novel. 8vo. [190 x 123 x 30 mm]. [1]f, 379pp. Bound in publisher's original red cloth, the front cover and spine blocked in blind and lettered in gilt, dark green endleaves, plain edges. (Ink spot on front cover, a little rubbed and spine slightly darkened). [ebc7176] London: [printed by Woodfall & Kinder for] The Daily Telegraph, Fleet Street, E.C. [c.1890] £150

Another reissue of the 1883 Routledge edition (Gilson E60), with Woodfall & Kinder's address given as 70 to 76, Long Acre. This time the publisher was The Daily Telegraph and there is a preliminary leaf reading "The 100 Best Novels. The Daily Telegraph Library. Selected by the Editor. With the Assistance of Sir Edwin Arnold, K.C.I.E., C.S.I., H. D. Trail, D.C.L. and W. L. Courtney, M.A., LL.D."

A good clean copy. Ink inscription: "To mother from Dora. February 24th 1906". Booklabel of John Jordan (no.46).

15. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. 8vo. [185 x 125 x 25 mm]. 379, [3] pp. Bound in publisher's original red cloth, the front cover and spine blocked in blue, black, pink and green, and the spine with an additional gold panel, green and yellow decorated endleaves, plain edges. (Headcaps and corners a little bumped, slightly dulled). [ebc7179] Port Sunlight: Lever Brothers, Limited, [1897] £200

A late reissue of Gilson E60 but not recorded by him and not found on COPAC. It is a good copy of this cheaply printed edition on poor quality paper. "Lever Bros" is named on the spine and the final two pages of advertisements are for "The "Sunlight" Library of Books by Standard Authors, given during 1897 for “Sunlight and Lifebuoy Soap Wrappers". 100 novels are listed, including Sense and Sensibility and .

Ink inscription: "With love from Grandma. Xmas 1922".

16. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. 8vo. [187 x 120 x 25 mm]. 379pp. Bound in publisher's original brown cloth, the front cover and spine blocked in blue, black and green to a floral design, and the spine with an additional gold panel, yellow endleaves, plain edges. (Rubbed and marked). [ebc7180] London: Standard Authors Publishing Company, 59, 60 & 61 Hatton Gardens, E.C.,[c.1897] £100

Another late reissue of Gilson E60 but not recorded by him and not found on COPAC. The paper and quality of printing is poor, though a little better that the Lever Brothers edition. "S.A.P.Co." is named on the spine, and though the overall designs are different, the lettering blocks would appear to be the same as on the Lever Brothers binding.

17. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. 8vo. [179 x 120 x 18 mm]. 379pp. Bound in publisher's original red cloth, front cover and spine ruled in blind and lettered in black, plain endleaves and edges. (Grubby and a little loose in the binding). [ebc7184] John Heywood Ltd, Deansgate and Ridgefield, Manchester; 20, 22, 24, 26 Lamb's Conduit Street, London, [c.1897] £75

Another late reissue of Gilson E60 but not recorded by him and not found on COPAC. It is again cheaply printed on poor quality paper, which is browned around the edges but has otherwise survived in reasonable condition. There is no reference to the publisher on the spine. Booklabel of John Jordan (no.48).

18. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. A Novel. Woodcut frontispiece portrait of Austen. Title printed in red and black. 8vo. [195 x 126 x 24 mm]. 379pp. Bound in publisher's original blue cloth, front cover and spine blocked in blind and gilt, plain endleaves and edges. (Sewing weak). [ebc7168] London: [printed by Woodfall & Kinder for] George Routledge and Sons, Limited, Broadway House, Ludgate Hill [1898?] £100

The front cover has "The Steventon Edition of Jane Austen" blocked in blind. This appears to be a reprint of the Routledge edition of 1884 (Gilson E60). Gilson notes that an edition of Sense and Sensibility described as "Steventon Edition" was published in August 1898, but no copy had been seen.

Early repair to corner pp.3/4 and corner torn pp.93/4, without loss, and a few other leaves rather roughly opened. The sewing is weak, but holding. With an ink inscription on front endleaf: "Louisa Lora Pitt, Hurley House, Norwood, 1903". With remains of a lending library label, with number 492, and two ink withdrawal stamps dated 1916. Booklabel of John Jordan (no.743).

19. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. A Novel. 8vo. [195 x 125 x 25 mm]. 379, [5] pp. Bound in publisher's original blue cloth, front cover and spine blocked in blind and gilt, plain endleaves and edges. [ebc7169] London: [printed by Woodcfall & Kinder for] George Routledge and Sons, Limited, Broadway, Ludgate Hill, Manchester and New York, [1898?] £125

As with the previous item the front cover has "The Steventon Edition of Jane Austen" blocked in blind. It would appear to be a reprint of the Routledge edition of 1883 edition (Gilson E60). However, unlike the previous item there is no frontispiece portrait, the title is printed in black and the imprints differ.

There are also four pages of advertisements at the end for "Novels, 250 Volumes, Two Shillings Each". The set of five Austen volumes (22-26) were available for 10 shillings.

A few pages rather roughly opened at the head with tear pp.257/8, without loss. A little browning and foxing but a very good copy. Bookseller's label of H. H. G. Grattan, of 17 The Borough, London Bridge. Booklabel of John Jordan (no.50).

20. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. A Novel. 8vo. [218 x 140 x 10 mm]. 121, [1], 3-8 pp. Bound in publisher's original glazed buff paper wrappers, the front printed in black, red, brown and green with an illustration of Willoughby raising Marianne Dashwood from the ground in the company of a large dog, the rear covers with an advertisement for Pears' Soap. (Edges frayed, tears at head of spine and lower right of rear cover with small losses). [ebc7167] London: [printed by Billings and Sons, Guildford for] George Routledge and Sons, Broadway, Ludgate Hill; New York: 9 Lafayette Place [1884] £200

Gilson E65. With the half-title and three leaves of advertisements for Routledge's Two Shilling Railway Library Novels at the end. There is an advertisement for Eno's medicines inside the front cover and various tonics and lotions inside the rear cover. Ink signature of Ada R. Brown at the head of front wrapper. A few spots, but a decent copy of this fragile production. It is printed in double columns.

21. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. 8vo. [221 x 146 x 19 mm]. 121, [7] pp. Original printed paper wrappers with an illustration of Marianne awakening in the night on the front and advertisements on rear and inside covers, spine lettered downwards. (Short closed tear on front, a little spotted and soiled). [ebc7164] London: [printed by Butler & Tanner, Frome] George Routledge & Sons, Lim. Broadway House, Ludgate Hill, [c.1884] £350

Not in Gilson or located on COPAC. Gilson E65, a Routledge Sixpenny Novel, dated to 1884, is also printed in double columns and with the same collation, but has different wrappers and advertisements and was printed by Billing and Sons of Guildford.

The advertisements in this edition are for Eno's Fruit Salt inside the front cover, Keating's Powder inside the rear cover and Vinolia on outside of rear cover. There are additional advertisements at the end. The illustration on the front is signed by F. C. Tilney. There is an ink stamp on the half-title "J. B. Eato / 33, 35 & 41, Fargate / Sheffield". It is a good copy of this fragile and ephemeral edition.

22. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. A Novel. New Edition. 8vo. [185 x 119 x 25 mm]. xv, [i], 331, [1], [8] pp. Bound in publisher's original yellow cloth, the front cover and spine blocked in red and green and lettered in gilt, green floral endleaves, plain edges. (Headcaps and corners a little bumped, slightly dulled). [ebc7178] London: [printed by H. Blacklock & Co. for] Ward, Lock and Co. Warwick House, Salisbury Square, E.C. New York: 10 Bond Street, [c.1885] £200

Gilson E53, for an edition dated 1881, printed by W. H. Smith & Son, as "Select Library of Fiction", No.187. This edition is undated, printed by Blacklock, as "Select Library of Fiction", No.163, according to the eight pages of advertisements at the end. Gilson refers to such a copy on NUC, but had not seen one, and nor had he seen a copy of E53 in an original binding.

A very good copy, with the half-title. Ink signature of Gwendolen R. Barrs at head of title, and booklabel of John Jordan (no.36).

23. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. A Novel. New Edition. 8vo. [183 x 120 x 26 mm]. [iii], vi-xv, [i], 331, [1], [4] pp. Bound in publisher's original red cloth, covers blocked in black, the spine blocked in black and gold, green floral endleaves, red edges. (Rubbed and a little stained on rear). [ebc7190] London: [printed by H. Blacklock & Co. for] Ward, Lock and Co. Warwick House, Salisbury Square, E.C. New York: Bond Street, [c.1885] £100

Gilson E53, but again undated, printed by Blacklock and with a different setting of the title to the other two Ward editions. There is no half-title, and it does not appear to have ever been present. The binding designates this as from the "Royal Library" series of "Choice Books of Famous Authors". There are four pages of advertisements, but no mention of the "Royal Library".

A little foxing towards the front. Ink signature of E. Theedam, dated October 1st [18]88.

24. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. 8vo. [187 x 120 x 30 mm]. 318, [16] pp. Bound in publisher's original red cloth, blocked in black and spine lettered in gilt, floral endleaves, red edges. (A little marked). [ebc7048] London: [printed and published by] Cassell & Company, Limited, [1887] £200

Gilson E71. In an undescribed variant cloth binding. With a page of advertisements for Cassell's Red Library on verso of front free endleaf, and 16 pages of advertisements at the end. Ink signature of Hélène Heale on the half title and booklabel of John Jordan (no.87). A very good copy.

The right-hand headlines give charmingly succint captions for the action on that page - such as 'very droll' and 'shattered hopes'.

24 25

25. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. A Novel. 8vo. [191 x 127 x 27 mm]. 318, [2], [16] pp. Bound in publisher's original blue cloth, spine lettered and blocked in gilt, light brown floral endleaves, top edge gilt. (Edges a little spotted). [ebc7193] London: [printed and published by] Cassell & Company, Limited [1887?] £150

Gilson E71, but with a variant title-page, without reference to Cassell's Red Library, and in an unrecorded blue cloth binding. The endeaves are the same as in the copy above. The verso of the front free endleaf has advertisements for 61 titles "Uniform with this Volume". The only other Austen was Pride and Prejudice . There are also 16 pages of advertisements at the end.

A very good copy. With the booklabel of John Jordan (no.84).

26. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. A Novel. Woodcut frontispiece of "Elinor Perceives Willoughby" and title-page woodcut vignette of Willoughby carrying Marianne. Printed in double columns. 8vo. [1]f, 97pp. Bound in original green cloth, the front cover blocked and lettered in black, the spine blocked in black and lettered in gilt, plain endleaves and edges. (Worn, inner hinge reinforced). [ebc7195] London and Manchester: W. H. White & Co., 1892 £300

Gilson E77. A cheap re-issue in the Manchester Library series. It was listed as published in September 1892, in two forms, priced at 6d and 3d. Gilson had not seen a copy and the only copy on COPAC is at Cambridge. The frontispiece has repairs to recto and is rather tatty. It is bound third in a volume of four works, the others being: 1. BRONTE (Charlotte). Jane Eyre. An Autobiography . Woodcut advertisements for "Furnish at Worsley's, The Pantheon, Gaythorn, Manchester" on verso of half-title, woodcut illustration on title and six woodcut plates. Printed in double columns. Gilson E77a. A copy in the Widener Library at Harvard has an ownership inscription dated November 1894. Price, 75 cents per copy". Pride and Prejudice was the other Austen title to appear on the list.

This is a good copy. With the booklabel of John Jordan (no.93).

27 28

28. AUSTEN (Jane). Sense and Sensibility. 8vo. [192 x 124 x 25 mm]. 377, [1], 6 pp. Bound in publisher's original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, plain endleaves and edges. [ebc7188] New York: A. L. Burt, 52-58 Duane Street, [c.1895] £75

Not in Gilson. A cheap reprint and a completely different setting to Burt's Home Library edition. This has "Cornell Series" at the foot of the spine. With six pages of advertisements for "A. L. Burt's Catalogue of Books for Young People by Popular Writers", with nothing by Austen.

Gilson E53, for earlier edition dated 1881. Our copy is undated, there is no mention of W. H. Smith as printers, there are no advertisements or references to "Select Library of Fiction" and Gilson had not seen an original binding.
