Festive house

The task was to develop an advent calendar in the style of a festive house. The special PLATINUM challenge was to use cartonboard exclusively. AWARD The usual thermoformed plastic inlay was replaced by a cartonboard alternative. The new cartonboard pack is also easy to assemble.

Cherry shake

The cherry tomatoes packed in the party shaker, replaces the traditional plastic PLATINUM packaging of cups with lids. It is 100 per AWARD cent plastic free. Excellence Awards

This year an additional challenge was presented to the judges due to the travel restrictions caused by the pandemic. Normally, the jury meets in The Hague for three days to evaluate and debate the merits of all the entries but that wasn’t, of course, possible this year. Judging was initially done individually, online, with each entry being scored and aggregated to collectively agree a shortlist of about 30 contenders. Physical samples of the shortlisted packs were then sent to all the judges for an extended ‘Zoom’ video conference and final selection of the category winners together with the Platinum and Gold awards. In truth, everything went extremely smoothly and for that I must thank the other judges for their co-operation and Pro Carton for organising everything flawlessly. As has become the norm, cartons continue to push the boundaries and the quality of entries was excellent, well considered and very much connected with consumer needs. There was an increase this year in the number of pharmaceutical entries and even more entries for the ‘Save the Planet’ category. We fully expected to see an increase in the latter category as this is clearly the trend going forward. As consumers are more and more informed about sustainability and the need to protect the environment, then there will be more focus and activity in this area. If consumers are looking to show preference for such materials then we, as an industry, will undoubtedly rise to this. That all said, I give thanks to all those that entered the competition and hope that next year we, the judges, can be physically together as a team once more.

Think Eco.

„Think Eco.“ has been designed with the idea of packing a smartphone with only FINALIST one piece of cardboard in its box. It's a system of various folded cardboard strips, which gets its stability from the way it fits into the outer shell. The cartonboard strips are tucked into each other, thus providing a level in the middle where the phone is cushioned and therefore safe. Due to the special way of folding, there is space left above and below the phone to put in additional equipment. The phone can be removed easily from the box by unfolding the stopper on either side. - -

INTRODUCTION

It's quite overwhelming! Even in these difficult times the Pro Carton Young Designers Award broke new records once again. The number of entries went up by almost 100 – to reach more than 550. It is also particularly pleasing that the number of participating universities and design schools has increased significantly – from 70 to 86. The number of national Pro Carton Young Designers Awards has also risen. This year three new national awards have been added to the seven awards from last year: the Netherlands, Romania and Turkey joining Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK. This can only help in our goal to get our industry even more closely involved with the student community. Naturally, we want to encourage the most talented design students to consider coming into the world of packaging, and more specifically the carton industry. Horst Bittermann, President Pro Carton Excitingly, we launched a brand new competition this year. The Pro Carton Student Video Award invited students to submit videos to promote the benefits of cartons and cartonboard. The brief was deliberately broad as cartonboard has many attributes – its sustainability being just one. The response was very good, despite the pandemic closing universities and requiring students to work on their projects from home. The standard was also impressive and augurs well for the future of this initiative. Covid-19 has thrown up many challenges for us all and indeed Pro Carton was no different. We had to make a variety of changes to the award schemes and the judging process. However, our efforts have paid dividends and we are particularly delighted with the way the students, and their teachers, have responded. I would like to thank both Reno de Medici and Artigrafiche Reggiane & Lai for supporting the 2020 competition and inviting the five winners of the #pcyda to Italy next year. The pandemic has had an unexpected beneficial effect on the environment which hopefully won’t just be short term. Packaging, and specifically cartonboard, will have an important role to play in driving further improvements. Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the need for a sustainable circular economy, based on renewable and recyclable materials and cartonboard is unbeatable in this area. Thanks to all those that have made the awards possible this year and that includes all the participants of course. We couldn’t and wouldn’t do it without you. See you soon!
