Using IAU MDC photographic, IAU MDC CAMS video, SonotaCo video, and EDMOND video databases, we aim to separate all provable annual meteor showers from each of these databases. We intend to reveal the problems inherent in this procedure and answer the question whether the databases are complete and the methods of separation used are reliable. We aim to evaluate the statistical significance of each separated shower. In this respect, we intend to give a list of reliably separated showers rather than a list of the maximum possible number of showers. Methods. To separate the showers, we simultaneously used two methods. The use of two methods enables us to compare their results, and this can indicate the reliability of the methods. To evaluate the statistical significance, we suggest a new method based on the ideas of the break-point method. Results. We give a compilation of the showers from all four databases using both methods. Using the first (second) method, we separated 107 (133) showers, which are in at least one of the databases used. These relatively low numbers are a consequence of discarding any candidate shower with a poor statistical significance. -

I hope ya’ll’ve remembered your favorite coping mechanism for dealing with the long hot summers we have down here in the bayou state, or, at the very least, are making peace with the short nights that keep us from enjoying both a good night’s sleep and a productive observing/imaging session (as if we ever could get a long enough break from the rain for that to happen anyway). At any rate, we figured now would be as good a time as any to get the gang back together for a good old fashioned potluck style barbecue: to that end, we’ve moved the July meeting to the Sunday, 11 July at 4PM at HRPO. -

DBSCAN is a modern cluster detection algorithm that is well suited to the problem of extracting meteor showers from all-sky camera data because of its ability to efficiently extract clusters of different shapes and sizes from large datasets. We apply this shower detection algorithm on a dataset that contains 25,885 meteor trajectories and orbits obtained from the NASA All-Sky Fireball Network and the Southern Ontario Meteor Network (SOMN). Using a distance metric based on solar longitude, geocentric velocity, and Sun-centered ecliptic radiant, we find 25 strong cluster detections and 6 weak detections in the data, all of which are good matches to known showers. We include measurement errors in our analysis to quantify the reliability of cluster occurrence and the probability that each meteor belongs to a given cluster. We validate our method through false positive/negative analysis and with a comparison to an established shower detection algorithm. 1. Zeus, stupito e compiaciuto per la metamorfosi, Costellazione era conosciuta anche dagli antichi Babilonesi ed Egizi che nell’Acquario, il Portatore d’Acqua, raffiguravano un uomo che versava decise di collocare in cielo la “capra d’acqua”. -

We will have on hand some of the gear that was donated to the club this summer, including mirrors, lenses, blanks, telescope parts, and even entire telescopes. Come check out the bargains and visit with your fellow amateur astronomers in a relaxed evening before Christmas. We also encourage people to bring any new gear or projects they would like to show the rest of the club. The meeting is at 7:00 on December 22nd at EWEB’s Community Room, 500 E. 4th in Eugene. We already knew Mercury was bizarre. A planet of extremes, during its day facing the sun, its surface temperature tops 800°F —hot enough to melt lead—but during the night, the temperature plunges to -270°F, way colder than dry ice. Frozen water may exist at its poles. And its day (from sunrise to sunrise) is twice as long as its year. Now add more weirdness measured by NASA’s recent MESSENGER spacecraft: Mercury’s magnetic field in its northern hemisphere is triple its strength in the southern hemisphere. Numerical models run by postdoctoral researcher Hao Cao, working in the lab of Christopher T. Russell at UC Los Angeles, offer an explanation: inside Mercury’s molten iron core it is “snowing,” and the resultant convection is so powerful it causes the planet’s magnetic dynamo to break symmetry and concentrate in one hemisphere. “Snowing” inside Mercury With a diameter only 40 percent greater than the Moon’s, Mercury is the smallest planet in the solar system (now that Pluto was demoted). But its gravitational field is more than double the Moon’s. -
