Native Plants and Plantings on the UIUC Campus This sourcebook was compiled for landscape architects working on projects at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus and the greater headwaters area of east central Illinois.1 It is written as a document that can be distributed to persons who may be unfamiliar with the local flora and vegetation, but its detailed species lists and hotlinks should be useful for seasoned Illinois campus designers as well. Landscape architects increasingly seek to incorporate native plants and plantings in campus designs, along with plantings that include adapted and acclimatized species from other regions. The term “native plants” raises a host of fascinating scientific, aesthetic, and practical questions. What plants are native to East Central Illinois? What habitats do they occupy? What communities do they form? What are their ecological relationships, aesthetic characteristics, and practical limitations? As university campuses begin to incorporate increasing numbers of native species and areas of native planting, these questions will become increasingly important. We offer preliminary answers to these questions, and a suite of electronic linkages to databases that provide a wealth of information for addressing more detailed issues. We begin with a brief introduction to the importance of native plants in the campus environment, and the challenges of using them effectively, followed by a description of the database, online resources, and references included below. -

This checklist groups the park’s most common plants into the communities where they are typically found. The plant’s growth form is indicated by “t” for trees and “s” for shrubs. To identify unfamiliar plants, consult a fi eld guide or visit the Wild Gardens of Acadia at Sieur de Monts Spring, where more than 400 plants are labeled and displayed in their habitats. Email: [email protected] INTRODUCTION Pick up any biology textbook and there will be a description of the typical sexual life cycle for plants. In higher plants, the life cycle starts with seed germination followed by vegetative growth leading to flower and gamete formation with the ultimate goal of creating genetically diverse offspring through seed production. The fern life cycle is more primitive but follows a similar progression from spore germi- nation to the gametophytic generation leading to sexual union of gametes resulting in the leafy sporophyte, which in turn creates the spores. Interestingly, plants have evolved unique alternative life cycles that bypass typi- cal seed production in favor of clonal reproduction systems. This may seem counter- intuitive because sexual reproduction should lead to greater genetic diversity in offspring compared to clonal plants. These sexual offspring should have a higher potential to adapt to new or changing environments, i.e., be more successful. How- ever, investing in clonal reproduction seems to increase the likelihood that a species can colonize specific environmental niches. It has been observed that many of the perennial species in a given ecosystem tend to combine both sexual and clonal forms of reproduction (Ellstrand and Roose, 1987). Additionally, unique clonal propaga- tion systems tend to be more prevalent in plants adapted to extreme environments like arctic, xerophytic, and Mediterranean climates. Mini-Review Objectives. The objective of this mini-review is to describe some of the ways plants have evolved clonal reproduction strategies that allow unique plants to colonize extreme environments. -

This type of conifer is also called the Canadian yew, American yew, ground-hemlock or simply yew. Its scientific name is Taxus canadensis and it thrives in ravines, riverbanks, swampy forests and on lakeshores.
