SUNDAY, 5 JULY 2020 LOVE ROMPS IN THE OAKS SERPENTINE SUBLIME IN Already an emphatic winner of the G1 1000 Guineas, THE DERBY Coolmore=s Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) entered elite territory on Saturday with a nine-length romp in the G1 Investec Oaks at Epsom. While not quite in the arena of the 12-length 1983 heroine Sun Princess (GB), this winning margin equalled that of the 1996 heroine Lady Carla (GB) (Caerleon) and there have been only four fillies in this race=s history to have won by further. Settled behind a duo among the main six-strong group racing adrift of the runaway pacemakers Tiempo Vuela (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and Passion (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) early, the chestnut moved forward to swamp stablemate Ennistymon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) approaching two out. • ARE SUPER TRAINERS GOOD OR BAD for the SPORT? by Chris Mcgrath Bill Finley Has Part II of His Two-Part Series on “Super Trainers” Dominating the Game of Racing
THURSDAY, JUNE 21, 2018 LETTER FROM ASCOT: HEROES AND GOATS ARE SUPER TRAINERS GOOD by Dave Johnson OR BAD FOR THE SPORT? When I heard the Ascot track announcer say, "Tony Curtis is heading to the stalls," it took me a while to put two and two together. "I thought Tony Curtis was dead," the guy next to me in the press box muttered. I was sure he was, too. But then I realized the announcer was talking about #16 in Wednesday's G2 Royal Hunt Cup Handicap. For those of you who always complain about short fields and favorites with ever blinking low odds, consider the fact that 32 were entered for this race today, and 30 ran. They needed three starting gates for the straight-on one-mile test. The favorite was 7-1. And it wasn't Tony Curtis (GB) (Rock of Click above to watch TDN video of trainers discussing the Gibraltar {Ire})--he finished nineteenth at 40-1. Late money Asuper trainer@ phenomenon poured in on #32 Seniority, making him the tepid public choice. Part II of a two-part series, by Bill Finley Cont. p7 Trainer Dan Peitz never had a particularly big stable, but he always seemed to get the most of what he had. He won the IN TDN EUROPE TODAY GI Test S. in 1996 with Capote Belle (Capote), one of six graded CECIL LEGACY STILL SHINING AT ASCOT stakes she won during her career, and he won the GII Fair On a day when Sir Michael Stoute took hold of the trainers’ Grounds Oaks in 2001 with Real Cozzy (Cozzene).

Who says today=s Thoroughbreds aren=t as tough as their ancestors? Try telling that to Juddmonte=s wonderful old stager Famous Name, who achieved a remarkable 19th stakes victory in the G3 Solonaway S. two days ago. His career figures now stand at 37-20-8-5, which means that this tough-as-teak 7-year-old has been out of the first three on only four occasions, even though 36 of his starts have been against stakes company. And it isn=t just on the racecourse that he has been busy, as his trainer Dermot Weld pointed out in yesterday=s TDN: AHe takes plenty of training and we have to work him hard to keep him fit, but his enthusiasm for being a racehorse is remarkable.@ The son of Dansili has now won one Group 2, 12 Group 3s and six listed races and I remain convinced that he would also have won the G1 Prix du Jockey-Club in 2008 but for being drawn 17 in a 20-horse field, which forced him to race wide.
