The Heritage Office, Donegal County Council in partnership with The Heritage Council is commissioning a series of short videos on traditional building and conservation skills as part of the implementation of the County Donegal Heritage Plan. The short video format will be a useful tool in raising awareness of these traditional skills, promoting best conservation practice and introducing new audiences to traditional skills through social media and ‘bite-size’ profiles.

An gréasán casta de théada a úsáideadh leis an tuí a choinneáil in áit, ceanglaíodh iad sin le bacáin chloiche ar sceimheal an tí agus ar bhinn an tí (Íomhá a bhuí le Cartlann Chontae Dhún na nGall, Comhairle Contae Dhún na nGall). Tá Oifig Oidhreachta Chontae Dhún na nGall, i gcomhpháirt leis an Chomhairle Oidhreachta, ag coimisiúnú sraith d’fhíseáin ghairide ar an tógáil thraidisiúnta agus ar scileanna caomhnaithe mar chuid de chur i bhfeidhm Phlean Oidhreachta Chontae Dhún na nGall. Is uirlis iontach é an físeán gairid le feasacht a ardú i dtaca leis na scileanna traidisiúnta seo, an dea- chleachtas a chothú i dtaca le caomhnú de, agus daoine úra a mhealladh i dtreo na scileanna traidisiúnta trí na meáin shóisialta agus trí phróifílí gairide.

2 WELCOME TO HERITAGE WEEK IN COUNTY DONEGAL The theme of National Heritage Week this year is ‘Pastimes / Past Times’ and people are encouraged to explore the unique ways in which we choose to spend our free time and how this has evolved through the years. People from heritage organisations, community groups, museums, heritage centres and the Culture Division, Donegal County Council have come together again this year to produce a great Heritage Week events programme in County Donegal. It’s little wonder then that County Donegal is set to be the county with the most Heritage Week events per head of population in again.

The challenges facing our natural, built and cultural heritage are acute. Ireland was the second country in the world to declare a climate and biodiversity emergency on May 9, 2019. With careful and responsible management and investment, our heritage can continue to serve present and future generations. Heritage lends character to our towns, villages and countryside; it reinforces our sense of place and belonging; it has the potential to support our burgeoning tourism trade; it has the capacity to provide jobs as we recognise the increased need for heritage protection and heritage-led regeneration; and it has the potential to engage and animate community efforts. The Department of Culture, Heritage & the Gaeltacht is in the process of producing a new National Heritage Plan - Heritage Ireland 2030 - and County Donegal was the county that made the most submissions per capita during the public consultation process. The participation of local communities and the expansion of local authority heritage services will be key to the successful implementation of the new National Heritage Plan. The prospect of Brexit also presents additional challenges to an integrated approach to the management of our heritage.

The Heritage Officer Programme, a joint initiative between The Heritage Council and local authorities in Ireland, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. National Heritage Week is coordinated by The Heritage Council and Local Authority Heritage Officers. The County Donegal Heritage Office, Donegal County Council has compiled this booklet highlighting events taking place for National Heritage Week in County Donegal. Participants are advised to confirm details of events in advance. Contact details have been identified for each of the events listed. So why not ‘pass the time’ this Heritage Week enjoying these events and advocating for the protection and conservation of our natural, built and cultural heritage? Joseph Heritage Officer

Updates on ‘National Heritage Week’ events are available on: www.heritageweek.ie

A day-to-day listing of events is available in the centre pages of this booklet. 1 FÁILTE GO SEACHTAIN NA hOIDHREACHTA I gCONTAE DHÚN NA nGALL Is é an téama atá ag Seachtain Náisiúnta na hOidhreachta i mbliana ná ‘Ag cur thart an ama / An t-am atá thart’, agus iarrtar ar dhaoine machnamh agus scrúdú a dhéanamh ar na dóigheanna ar leith a chuireann muid thart an t-am saor atá againn, agus féachaint ar an dóigh ar tháinig athrú air seo le himeacht na mblianta. Tá daoine as eagraíochtaí oidhreachta, coistí pobail, iarsmalanna, ionaid oidhreachta, agus as an Rannán Cultúir, Comhairle Contae Dhún na nGall, i ndiaidh teacht le chéile arís chun clár imeachtaí den chéad scoth le haghaidh Sheachtain na hOidhreachta a fhoilsiú i gContae Dhún na nGall. Ní nach ionadh go bhfuiltear ag dréim go mbeidh an líon is mó imeachtaí de chuid Sheachtain na hOidhreachta, in aghaidh an duine in Éirinn, ag Contae Dhún na nGall arís i mbliana. Tá dúshláin mhóra roimh ár n-oidhreacht nádúrtha, thógtha agus chultúrtha. Bhí Éire ar an dara tír sa domhan a d’fhógair géarchéim aeráide agus bhithéagsúlachta ar an 9 Bealtaine, 2019. Má bhíonn muid cúramach agus tuisceanach ó thaobh bainistíochta agus infheistíochta de, is féidir linn an oidhreacht a chaomhnú do na glúnta atá anois ann, agus do na glúnta atá le theacht. Cuireann an oidhreacht le carachtar na mbailte móra, na sráidbhailte agus na tuaithe; neartaíonn sí an ceangal idir muid féin agus an áit arb as muid; tacaíonn sí le hearnáil na turasóireachta; is féidir leis an oidhreacht cuidiú le postanna a sholáthar de réir mar a aithníonn muid an gá níos mó le cosaint na hoidhreachta agus le hathnuachan oidhreacht-bhunaithe; agus is féidir léi an pobal a mhealladh agus a spreagadh chun gnímh. Tá an Roinn Cultúir, Oidhreachta agus Gaeltachta i mbun Plean úr Náisiúnta Oidhreachta a chur le chéile – Oidhreacht Éireann 2030 – agus is ó Chontae Dhún na nGall a tháinig an líon is mó aighneachtaí le linn an phróisis chomhairliúcháin phoiblí. Beidh ról fíorthábhachtach ag rannpháirtíocht na bpobal áitiúil agus ag leathnú seirbhísí oidhreachta na n-údarás áitiúil chun go gcuirfear an Plean úr Náisiúnta Oidhreachta i bhfeidhm go héifeachtach. Is féidir go gcruthóidh an Breatimeacht dúshláin bhreise i gcoinne cur chuige comhtháite i dtaca le bainistiú ár n-oidhreachta. Tá Clár na nOifigeach Oidhreachta, comhthionscnamh idir An Chomhairle Oidhreachta agus na húdaráis áitiúla in Éirinn, ag ceiliúradh 20 bliain ar an fhód i mbliana. Is iad an Chomhairle Oidhreachta agus Oifigigh Oidhreachta na nÚdarás Áitiúil a chomhordaíonn Seachtain Náisiúnta na hOidhreachta. Tá an leabhrán seo, a thugann spléachadh ar na himeachtaí a bheas ar siúl i gContae Dhún na nGall le linn Sheachtain Náisiúnta na hOidhreachta, curtha i dtoll a chéile ag Oifig Oidhreachta Chontae Dhún na nGall, Comhairle Contae Dhún na nGall. Iarrtar ar rannpháirtithe sonraí na n-imeachtaí a dheimhniú roimh ré. Tá sonraí teagmhála curtha ar fáil do na himeachtaí atá liostaithe. Mar sin de, déan cinnte go gcuirfidh tú ‘an t-am thart’ le linn Sheachtain na hOidhreachta i mbliana trí shult a bhaint as na himeachtaí seo, agus trí sheasamh suas lenár n-oidhreacht nádúrtha, thógtha agus chultúrtha a chosaint agus a chaomhnú. Seosamh Ó Gallachóir Oifigeach Oidhreachta

Tá an scéal is déanaí i dtaca leis an tSeachtain Oidhreachta Náisiúnta ar fáil ar: www.heritageweek.ie

Growing in importance and population throughout the nineteenth century, it became a popular angling centre and marching band tradition developed from the 1870s. Traidisiúin na Farraige: Southwest Donegal is renowned for its fishing heritage. Seafaring expeditions shaped the folklore stories, customs, sean-nós songs, traditional music tunes and the spoken tongue. Numerous scholars who conducted research in the region of Gleann Cholm Cille and Teileann during the twentieth century observed a distinct seafaring influence ‘blas na farraige’ on the dialect of spoken Irish. In acknowledging such a rich and varied maritime heritage, this event reflects on both past and present oral accounts of local fishermen beginning with a tour of ‘Teach an Iascaire’ in The Folk Village followed by a discussion panel in Oideas Gael.
