These are some of the best places to stargaze in Texas Big Bend National Park Big Bend National Park is not only Texas’s most famous park— it is also known as one of the most outstanding places in North America for star gazing. Thanks to the sparse human occupation of this region, it has the least light pollution of any other National Park unit in the lower 48 states. This can be a real surprise to visitors when they are outside in Big Bend at night and see the Milky Way in its full glory for perhaps the first time in their life. Needless to say, you can stargaze just about anywhere in Big Bend, but there are a few spots you might want to consider. If you’re an admirer of astronomy, bring your telescope to the Marathon Sky Park. You can also see the stars from the stargazing platform atop Eve’s Garden Bed and Breakfast in Marathon. Brazos Bend State Park Located an hour outside of Houston, Brazos Bend State Park is a great place for any astronomical enthusiast. Not only is it far removed from the light pollution of the Lone Star State’s biggest city, it’s home to the George Observatory, where visitors can view planetary objects up close and personal. LONE STAR STATE Caprock Canyons State Park Home to the only wild bison herd in the state of Texas, Caprock Canyon State Park in the Texas panhandle has stunning views of constellations. -
Oaks of the Chihuahuan Desert Region
International Oaks by Michael Martin Melendrez Los Lunas, New Mexico resented below are 23 species of white oak, six of black • oak, and two intermediate or golden oaks, found in the southwestern United States (primarily New Mexico, Ari zona, and western Texas). These nutnbers tnay be disputed by some oaks students. Differences of opinion exist as to the true boundaries of the Chihuahuan Desert the potential hybrid sta tus of sotne of the oaks, and their delineation. Also new oaks not previously known to occur in the area are continually dis covered. Counting the additional oaks found in the adjacent Mexican State of Chihuahua, there are n1ore than 60 species. The Chihuahuan Desert Region is truly The Land o.fOaks. The production nursery industry of our area has started, on a small scale, the introduction of oaks with a limited species selec tion. Unfortunately the southern live oak (Quercus virginiana) usually is the first one to be grown and sold, and it is commonly promoted as the best oak for the desert cit ies of the Southwest. But between spending more time with your local area birds and an ever-growing number of virtual offerings, there are still plenty of opportunities to grow as a birder during this time. The Southwest Strategy Coordination Office worked with state and federal fire management officials to plan a working meeting that would incorporate the best practices from government fire officials, regional execu- tives, tribal members, and outside organizations. The team prepared the Fire Risk Reduc- tion and Recovery Workshop for March 7 & 8, 2001 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A Tribal Consultation Briefing on the National Fire Plan was held on March 6, 2001 at the Red Rock State Park facility in Gallup, New Mexico. -

Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve WHITE PAPER July 1, 2020 I. Introduction McDonald Observatory is applying to the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) to establish an International Dark Sky Reserve (DSR) in the Big Bend region of far West Texas and Northern Mexico. Such certification will help raise awareness of the value of protecting the night skies for ongoing astronomical research at the Observatory and encourage communities in the area to adopt night sky friendly outdoor lighting practices. Such practices create a safer and more attractive nighttime environment, promoting eco- and astro-tourism in the region. Also, mitigating the amount of artificial light shining wasted into the night sky helps protect major wildlife habitats and migration corridors throughout the Big Bend. II. McDonald Observatory McDonald Observatory is a 500-acre satellite campus of the University of Texas at Austin, located in the heart of the Davis Mountains in far West Texas. This world-class astronomical research facility is home to some of the world’s largest telescopes and darkest night skies. The Observatory maintains a robust public outreach program, including Guided Tours of its research facilities, evening Star Parties three times a week, accredited teacher workshops, and live- streaming telescopic tours of the night sky, the Moon, and the Sun. III. Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve An IDA International Dark Sky Reserve is a public or private land possessing an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and nocturnal environment that is specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural, heritage and/or public enjoyment. Reserves consist of a core area meeting minimum criteria for sky quality and natural darkness, and a peripheral area that supports dark sky preservation in the core. -

Bryan Birds of the Trans-Pecos: a field checklist the chihuahuan desert Traditionally thought of as a treeless desert wasteland, a land of nothing more than cacti, tumbleweeds, jackrabbits and rattlesnakes – West Texas is far from it. The Chihuahuan Desert region of the state, better known as the Trans-Pecos of Texas (Fig. 1), is arguably the most diverse region in Texas. A variety of habitats ranging from, but not limited to, sanddunes, desert-scrub, arid canyons, oak-juniper woodlands, lush riparian woodlands, plateau grasslands, cienegas (desert springs), pinyon-juniper woodlands, pine-oak woodlands and montane evergreen forests contribute to a diverse and complex avifauna. As much as any other factor, elevation influences and dictates habitat and thus, bird occurrence. Elevations range from the highest point in Texas at 8,749 ft. (Guadalupe Peak) to under 1,000 ft. (below Del Rio). Amazingly, 106 peaks in the region are over 7,000 ft. in elevation; 20 are over 8,000 ft. high. These montane islands contain some of the most unique components of Texas’ avifauna. As a rule, human population in the region is relatively low and habitat quality remains good to excellent; habitat types that have been altered the most in modern times include riparian corridors and cienegas. Guzman Billy Pat McKinney November 1, 2000 Ecology of the Mountain Lion on Big Bend Ranch State Park in the Trans-Pecos Region of Texas 1 Abstract Twenty-one mountain lions (Puma concolor) were captured on Big Bend Ranch State Park (BBRSP), 18 December 1992 - 31 August 1997, using leghold snares or trained hounds. Captured lions were examined and aged, and morphological measurements were recorded. Sixteen lions were fitted with radio transmitters operating on individual frequencies. Collared lions were monitored from the ground and fixed-wing aircraft. One radio failed to work, but a total of 711 locations was recorded for 10 male and 5 female radio-collared mountain lions. Home ranges were delineated for 6 male and 5 female lions. Average annual ranges (100% minimum convex polygon) for adult male lions (348.6 km2 or 86,140 acres) were 59.1% larger (P<0.05) than for adult female mountain lions (205.9 km2 or 50,878.8 acres). Average percent overlap (100% minimum convex polygon) of annual female-female, male-male, and female-male lion ranges were 26.1, 22.9, and 28.9, respectively. Annual shifts were apparent (P<0.05) for female lions and for the cumulative male mountain lion ranges. Analysis of fecal scats (n=135) indicated collared peccary (Tayassu tajacu) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) were preferred prey and were consumed almost equally.
